Oshogbo (Flowerbudnews): Osun State government has announced plans to construct ten central ultra-modern abattoirs across the state as part of government efforts to standardise the operations of butchers and allied workers.

The plan was announced on Tuesday in Oshogbo by the Special Adviser to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Agriculture, Hon. Olaniran Akanfe while speaking in an interview with Flowerbudnews on developments in the Agricultural sector of the state’s economy.

Hon. Akanfe said that the Adeleke Administration’s decision to build the abattoirs was the outcome of requests to that effect by butchers in Osun through the Butchers Association to ensure that meat on sale in the state were fit for human consumption.

He said that the high demand for meat within the state necesitated the need to build abattoirs for meat processing in a mechanized and hygienic way.

“The government want to put a stop to sub-standard condition where in some cases, butchers clean their dressed carcass and tripes in nearby streams susceptible to human and animal faecal contamination as a result of shortage of water supply in their location,” he stressed..

Hon Akanfe stated that for many years, local abattoirs or slaughter houses have been in a deteriorated state, meats were from animals not properly inspected, and with waste management and environmental hygiene has been on the decline.

He said that the abattoir project ”is to focus on improving livestock productivity, enhancing resilience and promoting the commercialization of animal health nutrition, and also with the aim of contributing to poverty reduction.

”By the request of butchers association, about ten abattoirs would be built across the state to increase the production of meat, the hereby generating revenue and employment in the state as well as ensuring proper sanitation in meat processing,” the Special Adviser said.

He assured that when the abattoirs are built, relevant officials of the ministry would always be there to certify that the animals healthy enough for human consumption and also that they were properly slaughtered to prevent wickedness to the animals.

Hon. Akanfe commended Governor Adeleke, ”for being a man of his words as evident by the numerous giant strides projects and the people of the state to give him another term in 2026..(Flowerbudnews)
