The Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Enugu State, Mr Muhammed Dada, says the Corps is committed to pursuing peace in communities in the state through its specialised departments.
Dada said this on Thursday in Enugu during a press conference on the 2023 International Day of Peace celebration.
He revealed that the Corps departments of Crisis Management under which resides the Peace and Conflict Resolution Units enables peaceful resolution to problems and provides a viable option to unnecessary litigation within communities.
According to him, the Agro Rangers Unit also functions to help mediate between farmer and herders conflicts in all communities within Enugu State and the country in general.
The commandant noted that the NSCDC, being a grassroots paramilitary Agency, could operate in both peace-time and war-time and with a mandate to protect lives and property.
Dada said that the Corps was strategically positioned as a change agent to assist Nigeria, which is a member nation in the United Nations (UN) and the International Civil Defence Organization, to aggressively pursue the realisation of a peaceful world.
“This year the NSCDC Enugu State Command throws its weight in line the chairmanship of its Commandant General, Dr Ahmed Audi, who has demonstrated total commitment and dynamism in fostering a safer clime in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
“The NSCDC has also fully collaborated with the military and sister agencies on state-level, national-level and at the sub-regional-level too.
“These levels of collaborations have resulted in intelligence sharing and manpower support which has continued to yield dividends in the fight against criminality, banditry and insurgency both within and outside the country,” he said.
The commandant noted that it was clear that a fight against insurgency, extremism and terrorism is a fight against poverty and societal underdevelopment in all its facets.
“Besides, these hydra-headed monsters cause the education of our youths to be hampered resulting in low literacy levels and the consequent fallouts of this malady where the same youths become agents of destruction owing to brainwashing,” he said.
Dada lauded the NSCDC Commandant General for the vibrant pursuit of the Safe School Initiative having inaugurated a 21-Man Technical Advisory Committee to provide expert support at the National Safe School Response Centre (NSSRC).
He assured that the initiative is in full swing under the leadership of the NSCDC with support from sister agencies resulting in proactive and interventionist support to schools in areas prone to insurgency.
The International Day of Peace is observed around the world annually on Sept. 21 and it is a Day set aside by the UN General Assembly to strengthen the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. (Flowerbudnews)
