UNDP trains 225 IDPs in Borno, Adamawa,Yobe in various skills

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with Borno State Government has trained 225 IDPs from Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States in different skills acquisitions to prepare them to becomes self reliant as return back to their communities.

Speaking at graduation ceremony of IDPS under the UNDP livelihood in the Northeast, held at the Ekanemi Hall, Rabat Polytechnic, Maiduguri on Wednesday, the head Northeast sub office of the UNDP,  Mizuho Yohkor, said “these women and youths sitting in this hall today 225 of them are part of the head 575 IDPs that were identified through rigorous and competitive process in this 2015. They passed through a compulsory two weeks orientation programme at the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre Jos, Plateau State and were thereafter placed in various technical and vocational facilities in Kaduna “.

“Those 225 IDPs have undertaken technical vocational in five trade which includes computer studies, Shoe/leather works, hair dressing, tailoring and catering and decorations . Theses skills will give them  life-long opportunity to sharpen their lives and making them economically viable and socially engaged.”,  Yohkor added.

She said since 2014, UNDP has been assisting the government and people of Borno,  Adamawa and Yobe to recover from the devastating effects of insurgency through the reconstruction of destroyed public buildings, including schools, health facilities, provision and rehabilitation of water facilities, supply of agricultural inputs and support to traders and business owners, adding that the UNDO will continue to partner an support the government of the affected states.

She said “since from our end, we will explore opportunities of linking up this intervention  with our integrated community stabilization package being piloted in the region, as well as the ongoing reconstruction an d rehabilitation programmes.”

Earlier in his address, the Rector, Ramat Polytechnic Maiduguri, Dr. Modu Kyari, said since “since skills training is most viable tool for rehabilitate youths back to life after the insurgency for their self dependency and economic development.

He commended the UNDO for the training is, which, according to him, will help in no small measure in changing the lives of not only the beneficiaries but their families and the entire community.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Yunus Musa, thanked the UNDP for the gesture and promised to put in good use the skills they acquired.
