MainPower, Federal Ministry of Labour Explore Collaboration On Capacity Building, Skill Upscaling

The MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) and Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment have expressed their readiness to explore collaboration on capacity building and increase in number of skilled workforce.

The both organisations agreed that a skilled, motivated and safety-conscious workforce is essential to delivering reliable electricity to residents and customers across Enugu State and Nigeria in general.

The Managing Director/CEO of MEDL, Dr Ernest Mupwaya, disclosed this on Tuesday while receiving a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, led by the Zonal Director/State Controller, Mrs Irene Afoke, at the company’s corporate headquarters, Power House, Enugu.

Mupwaya commended the Ministry for its contributions to promoting fair employment practices and a productive working environment in the country.

He noted that collaboration between the Ministry and MainPower in staff training and development would enhance employee productivity, strengthen workplace safety and ultimately improve customer service.

“MainPower management appreciates Mrs Afoke and her team from the Federal ministry for the visit and reaffirmed MainPower’s commitment to translating the discussions into concrete improvements for its workforce and customers,” he said.

As a follow-up to the discussions, Mupwaya proposed that both organisations nominate focal persons to identify priority training needs and develop an action plan with clear responsibilities and timelines.

He said the plan would guide an initial training programme, with periodic reviews to assess progress and outcomes.

Earlier, Afoke noted that the visit was part of familiarisation engagements with critical stakeholders in the state following her assumption of office as Zonal Director/State Controller.

The Zonal Director commended the MainPower and its parent or holding company – Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) – for its impactful services and resilience over many years now.

She said that the meeting also provided an opportunity for both organizations to discuss staff welfare, occupational health and safety, harmonious labour relations, as well as opportunities for translating their shared objectives into practical programmes.

She was accompanied by the Deputy Director, Mrs Joy Oke; Assistant Chief Labour Inspector, Mrs Eberechukwu Nome; Assistant Chief Labour Officer, Mr Danjuma Akubor; and Principal Labour Officer, Mr Chukwunonso Umegbolu.

Present at the meeting were the officials of the EEDC, which included: Group Chief Finance Officer, EEDC, Mr Pauli Isiguzo, and the Company Secretary, EEDC, Mr Anthony Achebe.

Other MainPower management staff present were the Chief Technical Officer, Engr. Chimezie Chukwu; Chief Commercial Officer, Mr. Ikenna Akabogu; Head, Health, Safety and Environment, Dr. Francis Iwu; Head, Customer Service, Mrs. Ijeoma Ogudebe; and Head, Communications, Mr. Emeka Ezeh.
