AFCON 2023: Super Eagles beat Indomitable Lions, reach quarter-finals

     Flowerbudnews

Nigeria’s Super Eagles reached the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after eliminating Cameroon from the continent’s flagship football championship on Saturday.

The Super Eagles, who took seven out of the maximum nine points from their group phase matches, stepped onto the relatively-familiar turf of the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny with assurance and performance to beat their neighbours 2-0.

They had taken the lead when Semi Ajayi swept the ball home from a goalmouth melee. Moroccan referee Redouane Jiyed gave the goal/

He was, however, summoned by the Video Assistant Referee to watch the action again and afterwards ruled out the strike.

(Captain William Ekong stops an advancing Cameroonian striker.)

Nigeria’s twin-terror of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman did not relent, and in the 35th minute, Africa Player of the Year Osimhen picked the pocket of a dithering defender Oumar Gonzalez and threaded to Lookman, who shot past Fabrice Ondoa from close range.

After the recess, Nigeria continued where they had left off in the first period, and Lookman blasted over the sticks from a 22-yard free-kick. Five minutes later Lookman freed Osimhen but got too much purchase on the ball and Ondoa cleared.

Cameroon called goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to duty in the 71st minute with a fierce free-kick, but the goaltender punched clear. Nwabali was injured in another goalmouth melee and had to be substituted by Francis Uzoho.

(Mass attack, mass defence: Osimhen, Calvin Bassey, Ekong and Semi Ajayi set to truncate a Cameroonian onslaught. )

Five minutes from the end, a one-two of Osimhen and Lookman from the left saw the ball roll to Olaoluwa Aina in the box, but his effort was too weak and Ondoa blocked with his leg.

On the dot of 90 minutes, Calvin Bassey and Lookman combined from the left, and with the Cameroonian defence flummoxed, Lookman placed the ball to the far left of Ondoa for his, and Nigeria’s, second goal of the night as the crowd went into delirium.

“It was a solid performance and we are proud of the team. They did a great job tonight and we look forward to the quarter-finals with high expectations,” President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau said at the final whistle.

The three-time champions, who also knocked out Cameroon from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in the Round of 16, will now confront Angola’s Palancas Negras (victors of Namibia) in the quarter-finals on Friday. Venue is the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan. Flowerbudnews)

  • NAFDAC Boss Warns on Dangers of Illegal Importation of Medical Syringes, Says it can Kill Local Production

NAFDAC Boss Warns on Dangers of Illegal Importation of Medical Syringes, Says it can Kill Local Production

Urges ANLCA to Join forces with NAFDAC to end rejection of Nigerian food exports in EU, USA others.

    By Biola Lawal
Abuja (Flowerbudnews): NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye has called for concerted efforts to tackle importation of medical syringes to prevent its possible killing of local pharmaceutical industries.

Prof Adeyeye particularly enjoined members of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) to work closer with NAFDAC to prevent illegal mportation of Syringes from overwhelming local firms producing syringes.

A statement by Sayo Akintola, NAFDAC Resident Media Consultant said that Prof. Adeyeye gave the advice in Lagos on Thursday during a familiarisation visit by the new executives of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) to NAFDAC Lagos office.

The delegation was led by its National President, Mr. Emenike Nwokochi.

The NAFDAC Boss urged ANLCA members to ”think more of the interest of the country over and above personal gains in their activities as clearing agents at the nations ports.”.

Prof Adeyeye narrated how she marveled at the stupendous investments committed to local production of Syringes in Nigeria by a local pharmaceutical company during a recent facility tour.

She said that the standard of the facilities she met on ground was comparable to whatever facility that could be found in the US or any country in Europe, adding that after the facility tour and being led into the warehouse, she was highly disturbed at the sight of huge unsold products.

The NAFDAC DG told her guests that over 1.5 billion units of the product were lying untouched in the warehouse due to low sales, exacerbated by the influx of imported syringes into the country, despite the high import duty slammed on the product to protect the local market.

Prof. Adeyeye however, noted with regrets that intelligence reports reaching her indicated that some compromise are being made at the port of entry in allowing illegal importation of unregistered containers of syringes into the country.

She revealed that a publication by USFDA stated that some syringes that come from Southeast Asia are of bad quality, adding that those products didnt fly by night and land in different warehouses in Nigeria: rather, they entered the country through individuals.

The NAFDAC DG expressed empathy towards manufacturers, stating, “I understand the challenges of not making sales, especially after investing a significant amount of money. That’s why I am particularly meticulous when it comes to overseeing our export processes.”

As licensed customs agents, she emphasized their pivotal role in facilitating the legal and safe import and export of goods, ensuring compliance with required standards.

She welcomed the familiarization visit, highlighting its objective to establish effective collaboration and cooperation.

‘The aim is to enhance the positioning and promotion of trade in regulated products, both domestically and in the international market’.

She also noted that the visit and discussion were important, considering the volume of food and agricultural commodities from Nigeria that is currently facing challenges at entry points in some countries in Europe, the United States of America and the United Kingdom, where they have been repeatedly rejected.

Nigeria has lost billions of naira in trade that could have benefitted our people. About 70 per cent of our exports are rejected, food products especially. All these rejected products did not go through NAFDAC regulatory assessment. It disgraces us as a country.

She said further, that it has also become a great issue of concern the number of substandard products coming into the country. That’s why I attach significant importance to this association because the goods that are either imported or exported, often play a crucial role in determining the strength of our economy.

In the area of Exports, she said the international market is competitive in nature and only welcomes products of high quality with relevant certifications and quality packaging that is environmentally friendly and beneficial to trade globally, noting with dismay that the problem of quality, standard, certification and appropriate packaging for made-in-Nigeria products destined for export has been an issue in the international market.

She however, emphasized the need to address the issue of rejections, adding that some exporters obtain the wrong documentation, especially fake lab results, instead of bringing their products to NAFDACs ISO 17025:2015 accredited labs for analysis,

She maintained that NAFDAC is the competent authority in Nigeria charged with the responsibility to regulate and control the manufacture, importation, exportation, distribution advertisement, sale and consumption of drugs, food and other regulated products in Nigeria.

NAFDAC having attained the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems that covers all her regulatory processes and procedures and certified WHO GBT maturity level 3, places great premium on deepening use of science in its regulatory processes and self-developments.

The DG however pointed out that the Agency believes in collaborative efforts with both local and international organizations to compliment her robust regulatory policies geared in protecting consumers and promoting public health by ensuring that regulated products and the systems for their production are safe for the public.

The DG further disclosed that the Agency had analysed the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) alert from the EU and observed that most rejected products by the EU having failed the relevant tests, were not having the appropriate documentation/certifications.

This calls for proper collaboration and synergy between all stakeholders to curb the negative behaviour of some of these exporters and ensure only quality and certified products are exported.

As licensed customs agents, Prof Adeyeye said they are responsible for ensuring that their members know the importance of the assessment of accompanying shipping documents and that goods are cleared through customs and all necessary regulations, stressing that by following the rules and regulations that govern the import and export of goods, they are helping to protect society, the environment, and consumers.

Speaking in the same vein, the National President of ANLCA, Mr. Emenike Nwokochi lamented that its shameful that when you buy yam abroad they tell you it is from Ghana, or any other country in West Africa when Nigeria is the highest producer of yam.

As the Naira continues to fall to the dollar, he said we cant do anything to help the Naira other than to increase the level of exports in the country to provide alternative source of raising foreign exchange.

He however, pledged his associations resolve to work in collaboration with the Agency to achieve the common goal of developing the nations economy. (Flowerbudnews)

  • Breaking: Allegations Against Naval Chief Malicious, Baseless – Navy

Breaking: Allegations Against Naval Chief Malicious, Baseless – Navy

    By Biola Lawal
Abuja (Flowerbudnews) The Nigerian Navy has reacted to allegations of corrupt practices Against the Chief of Naval Staff, describing it as unfounded, malicious and baseless.

Naval Director of Information, Rear Admiral AO AYO-VAUGHAN gave the clarification in a statement entitled ‘:SPONSORED MALICIOUS PUBLICATION AGAINST THE OFFICE AND
PERSON OF THE CHIEF OF THE NAVAL STAFF,”
a copy of which was made to Flowerbudnews.

Rear Admiral Vaughan stressed that the publication and allegations were part of a ”coordinated frantic efforts to blackmail the office and person of the CNS by some disgruntled elements who are feeling the heat of the Nigerian Navy’s renewed vigour to fight crude oil theft and illegalities in the
maritime domain as well as those who have, in one way of the other, shortchanged
    the Navy before now.”

He said that a cartel perpetrating atrocities in the maritime sector, including the oil theft, were feeling the heat of Navy’s OPERATION DELTA SANITY, and therefore, decided to ”resort to cheap blackmail through immoral and compromised online media publishers.”

Rear Admiral Vaughan urged Nigerians to ‘:discountenance completely the malicious publication that emanated from Peoples Gazette because it is totally untrue and completely baseless”.

He stressed that accusations were ‘:a figment of the shallow imagination of the writer, his publishers, and their unpatriotic sponsors’:

    The Full Statement Read:
The attention of the Naval Headquarters has again been drawn to the unfounded,
baseless and malicious publication by Peoples Gazette, an online publisher reputed
for blackmail, character assassination and libel, and with the Nigerian Navy as one
of its recurring targets as it was in June 2023 in a similar malicious article alleging the immediate past Navy Chief did not want to hand over.

The People Gazette has again originated a false report saying, “Naval Chief Emmanuel Ogalla lands in trouble over multibillion naira oil bunkering, contract-splitting fraud.

The allegations that the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) accepted over $170 million
in bribes as well as alleged involvement in multi-billion naira contract splitting fraud
in the last 6 months are untenable, baseless and untrue.

Firstly, there are clear procedural requirements in the arrest, detention and release of any vessel or persons found culpable in the maritime environment.

It is until these processes are duly concluded that such vessels are released to appropriate prosecuting agencies for further actions.

Indeed, all arrested vessels mentioned in the publication that were involved in crude oil theft and illegal oil bunkering are being investigated and none of such vessels has been released as alleged.

Secondly, the CNS does not award or oversee oil bunkering contracts; the award of
such is the sole prerogative of NNPCL.

Thirdly, all contracts awarded by the Navy follow due process in line with the laws
    of the Federation.

The Nigerian Navy (NN) and her roles is an offshoot of the constitutional provisions and duly guided by extant lawsp and regulations of the land.

The policing roles of the Navy empowered her to monitor the maritime domain of the Nation. These among others include arrest of vessels that contravene any of the maritime laws and SPOMO Act 2019.

The Service is aware of the coordinated frantic efforts to blackmail the office and person of the CNS by some disgruntled elements who are feeling the heat of the Nigerian Navy’s renewed vigour to fight crude oil theft and illegalities in the
maritime domain as well as those who have in one way of the order shortchanged the Navy before now.

Specifically, the continuous rejuvenated operations towards curbing oil theft has
given the oil thieves sleepless nights hence the decision to engage in the malicious
    publications.

It would be recalled that the Nigerian Navy recently launched OPERATION DELTA SANITY which provided for a holistic, more robust
roadmap towards the reinvigorated stance of the NN towards the fight against crude
oil theft and other forms of illegalities in the Nation’s maritime environment.

Indeed, the NN is aware of these antics as it is expected considering the current resolve of the NN to engage oil thieves head on.

The cartel hitherto believed no individual could confront its ranks. Fortunately, the recent achievements of the NN in this regard have put them on their heels hence the resort to cheap blackmail through immoral and compromised online media publishers.

Pertinently, the NN will continue to ensure legitimate businesses in the maritime
domain thrive seamlessly. Also, these distractions will in no way retract the NN’s
resolve to confront these criminals who must be brought to justice for Nigeria’s
    economy to rebound.

The security and economy of the Nation is greater than any group of persons that think they must continue to drain the country.

Accordingly, members of the public are therefore enjoined to discountenance
completely the malicious publication that emanated from Peoples Gazette because
it is totally untrue and completely baseless being a figment of the shallow imagination of the writer, his publishers, and their unpatriotic sponsors.(Flowerbudnews)
