Israel demolishes buildings in Jerusalem, 800,000 to lose homes

Israeli forces began demolishing buildings near a military barrier on the outskirts of Jerusalem on Monday, in the face of Palestinian protests and international criticism.

Bulldozers accompanied by hundreds of Israeli soldiers and police moved in to Sur Baher, a Palestinian village on the edge of East Jerusalem in an area that Israel captured and occupied in the 1967 Middle East War.

Palestinians fear that the razing of homes and buildings near the fence will set a precedent for other towns along the route of the barrier, which runs for hundreds of kilometers around and through the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The demolition is the latest round of protracted wrangling over the future of Jerusalem, home to more than 500,000 Israelis and 300,000 Palestinians, and sites sacred to Judaism, Islam and Christianity.

Israeli forces cut through a wire section of the barrier in Sur Baher under cover of darkness early on Monday, and began clearing residents from the area.

Floodlights lit up the area as dozens of vehicles brought helmeted security forces into the village.

After first light, mechanical diggers began destroying a two-storey house as soldiers moved through several floors of a partly constructed multi-storey building nearby.

“Since 2 a.m. they have been evacuating people from their homes by force and they have started planting explosives in the homes they want to destroy,” said Hamada Hamada, a community leader in Sur Baher.

The work was filmed and photographed by Palestinian, Israeli and international activists who had mobilized to try and stop the demolition.

Israel’s Supreme Court ruled in June that the structures violated a construction ban. The deadline for residents to remove the affected buildings, or parts of them, expired on Friday.

Some Sur Baher residents said they would be made homeless. Owners said they had obtained permission to build from the Palestinian Authority, which exercises limited self-rule in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Amnesty and the power of the new WordPress editor

In the short video below, you’ll see a quick overview of what it’s like to build new sites quickly and publish and manage content in Amnesty’s new platform launching in September.

See how Big Bite’s custom blocks streamline publishing for Amnesty International.

Agency partner Big Bite has built an entirely new site platform for Nobel Peace Prize Winner Amnesty International, with the new WordPress editor as its foundation, via the Gutenberg plugin. They focused on developing custom blocks and a core theme that serves as the heart of Amnesty’s digital efforts moving forward. More than a new site, this is a framework for applying consistent brand identity, design, and user experience standards to many new sites and for allowing creators to spin up new, powerful sites quickly and with ease. And as a part of Big Bite’s and Amnesty’s shared commitment to giving back to the community, large parts of the project will be released as open source components for anyone to use.

“Whoa, how do I do that?”

We knew you’d ask that and we have you covered! We developed a series of educational videos for both users and developers that are working with Gutenberg. These address questions such as converting ACF and CMB2 to Gutenberg and how to control access to blocks.

It's like we read your mind. We developed the Gutenberg Ramp plugin for just this reason. On your VIP Go sites, you can now load Gutenberg everywhere, or selectively by post ID (load only for specific posts) and post type (load only for specific post types). Find complete instructions at this helpful page.

We recommend that you load it up in a VIP Go development environment first. If you don’t have a development environment on which to test, now’s a great time to get one set up. Just open up a ticket with our Support team and we can get a development site set up for you. Unless otherwise requested, we’ll sync the content from your live site so you can get a true sense of how Gutenberg will work for you. If you already have a development environment and would prefer not to disturb that, we can create an additional Gutenberg testing environment instead. Not to worry, in either case content changes here will not affect the content on your live site.

  • NNPC records N6.33b trade surplus in May -Report

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said it recorded a trade surplus of N6.33 billon for the month of May, 13 per cent higher than the N5.60 billion surplus made  in April .

The corporation disclosed this in its Monthly and Operations report (MFOR) released on Sunday in Abuja

It attributed the rise to the increase in gas and power output and surplus recorded by the corporation’s downstream entities like NNPC Retail, Petroleum Products Marketing Company(PPMC) , Nigerian Pipelines Security Company(NPSC) and Duke Oil.

The report further indicated that within the period, the NNPC recorded a total of 580.32 million dollars in export sale of crude oil and gas which is 23.39 per cent higher than the previous month’s figure.

” Out of this number, crude oil export sales contributed 458.59 million dollars which translates to 79.02 per cent of the entire dollar transactions compared with 342.11 million dollars contributed in the month of May,” it said

It also showed that between May 2018 and May 2019, crude oil and gas worth 5.97 billion dollars was exported.

On the downstream, the report noted that for the corporation to ensure uninterrupted supply and effective distribution of petrol across the country, a total of 2.06 billion litres of petrol translating to 66.49mn liters/day were supplied for the month of May.

It noted that beyond supply, the corporation continued to monitor the daily stock of petrol to achieve smooth distribution of petroleum products and zero fuel queue across the nation.

“Within the period, a total of 60 pipeline points were vandalized which represents 52 per cent decrease from the 125 points vandalized in April.

“The Atlas Cove-Mosimi and Ibadan-Ilorin pipelines accounted for 38 per cent and 23 per cent respectively and other locations accounted for the remaining 39 percent of the total breaks,” the report said.

The report attributed the improvement to the spirited efforts by NNPC in collaboration with the local communities and other stakeholders to continuously strive to reduce and eventually eliminate this menace.

The May 2019 NNPC MFOR is the 46th in the series, designed to provide greater transparency and remove the perception of opacity associated with the operations of the national oil company.

It will be recalled that the new NNPC Group of managing Director Malam Mele Kyari and his team had pledged to enhance the current approach to encourage increased citizenship participation and greater accountability to the public.(NAN)

  • Zoo keeper impregnates female orangutan, says it was consensual

A zoo keeper at Surabaya, Indonesia has been arrested for impregnating a female orangutan, he was charged with sexual assault on a number of animals, reports the Kalimantan Press this morning.

In a shocking discovery, a 38-year-old zoo keeper at Indonesia;s Surabaya zoo was caught by hidden camera put in place by zoo’s security officials while in full action, sexually assaulting the animals including the orangutan.

The cameras were installed after doubts emerged about the man’s devious actions towards the zoo animals.

“Some animals seemed sexually aroused when it was time to feed them” explains Akhiroel Yahya, employee of the zoo for 14 years.

“But what made us most suspicious was when we discovered Marylin, our oldest orangutan, was pregnant. She has never been in contact with any other orangutans because of her aggressive nature, so it didn’t make any sense” he acknowledges, visibly troubled by the news.

The zoo officials admit it took them sometime before being able to explain what had actually happened.

“At first, we clearly did not comprehend what had happened,” admits the zoo’s director, Abdoel Hakim. “Marilyn has been secluded for the past 10 years, it was a total mystery,” he acknowledges.

“It is only when we placed several hidden cameras that we learned the horrible truth” he admits, visibly angered by the whole situation.

When confronted by local authorities, the offender denied any wrong doing on his part.

“He said everything he had done was consensual,” explains police chief Abubakar Jaar. “He said he loved each and everyone of the animals and was very sorry he had impregnated the orangutan,” he told local reporters.

“He says he did not know orangutans could get pregnant from humans,” he added.

Some specialists claim a rare genetic predisposition could explain how a man could have impregnated the female orangutan.

“Contrary to popular belief, the orangutan species is much closer to the human species than chimpanzees. We share practically the same DNA code, with only minute differences, which could explain the orangutan falling pregnant from this man” explains Paleobiologist Bachtiar Pado Panghulu, of the University of Jakarta.

“Particularly in Indonesia, the genetic profile of some of the population is extremely close to the orangutan species, leading us to believe they’re might have been a common ancestor to both species only a few hundred thousand years ago,” he admits.

Surabaya zoo, Indonesia’s largest zoo, repeatedly made headlines in 2012 because of its scandalous treatment of its animals after a former employee of the zoo claimed that over 50 animals had died at the zoo during the three months since he had been hired. /Flowerbudnews

  • AUPCTRE wins again, court orders enforcement of award for Anambra employee

The Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) records victory again, as court orders enforcement of parts of the Industrial Arbitration Panel award to its members in Anambra.

This was contained in a statement signed by AUPCTRE’s Secretary General Raphael Imade, on Sunday, in Abuja.

The National Industrial Court (NIC) in Enugu, presided over by Justice O. O Arowosegbe, had on June 3, struck out a case filed by the union on behalf of its members in Anambra, for being incompetent, saying it could not grant an order already granted by the IAP, but could only enforce the same.

AUPCTRE had filed a case against the state government at the IAP in Abuja, in 2005 over non payment of 48 months salaries and eight years leave allowance for employees of the Anambra State Water Corporation; and denying workers of the state’s Environmental Protection Agency 25 months salaries and eight years leave allowance.

In 2012, the IAP awarded in favour of AUPCTRE and the workers among other claims, their total outstanding arrears of salaries and leave allowances.

The IAP further ordered that the Anambra State Government should promote and increase the workers’ salaries across board and also ensure payment of workers gratuities and pension.

It said, in spite of the IAP award in favour of the workers, the Anambra State Government blatantly refused to make the necessary payments to AUPCTRE and workers as ordered.

The IAP had held that the conduct of Anambra government in refusing to pay its workers salaries for such a long time was the worst form of unfair labour practice in Nigeria.

AUPCTRE said in the statement that the unpleasant situation led the union to file an application at the NIC for the enforcement of the IAP award wherein the first bank account of the Anambra State Government was garnished in year 2014 for the payment of the judgment debts and cost.

Garnishment refers to a legal process that instructs a third party to deduct payments directly from a debtor’s wage or bank account, it is used in recovering debts such as unpaid taxes, monetary fines, child support payments and defaulted student loans.

After the said enforcement by garnishee in 2014, the government still refused to pay the workers’ salaries and leave allowances; and also did not promote and increase the workers’ salaries or pay pensions and gratuities as ordered in the award by IAP, it said.

AUPCTRE said this action by Anambra government forced it to file an application to NIC in 2018 to enforce part of the IAP award of promotion and salary increase across board and for payment of the retired workers’ pension and gratuities.

It was this application that led to the judgment of NIC, Enugu Judicial Division on June 3, wherein the Court held that it could not grant an order already granted by the IAP, but could enforce part of the award that was yet to be enforced.

The court further held that its enforcement jurisdiction could only be properly invoked through garnishee proceedings and application for committal until the IAP award was carried out.

It further ordered for an application to put the personal property of the judgment debtor on sale until it was able to defray the judgment sum.

According to AUPCTRE, the court said that it does not agree that the yet to be enforced part of the IAP award cannot be enforced by garnishee proceedings.

It said the workers’ pensions, gratuities, promotion and salary increase can be calculated and arrived at by simple arithmetic where the judgment debtors refused to carry out the award.
