The number of pilgrims from Nigeria to Madinah, for the 2019 Hajj, has reached 19,081 in 39 flights, according to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) in Madinah on Wednesday.
NAHCON’s Command and Control Centre said that MaxAir NGL1049 had departed Ilorin for Jeddah at 05:40 a m, comprising 369 Kwara pilgrims with 187 males and 182 females.
The centre also disclosed that Kano pilgrims, made up of 121 males and 64 females, left Nigeria for Madinah.
Meanwhile, Nigerian pilgrims have been conducting their religious obligations toward the fulfillment of Hajj requirement in Makkah peacefully.
Officers of NAHCON and their counterparts from the states have been doing their best in enlightening pilgrims of what is expected of them to attain acceptable Hajj.
Other officers were seen attending to accommodation and health needs of pilgrims and ensuring that pilgrims are served with good food among others.
However, in spite of the advice from NAHCON officers to the pilgrims to concentrate on the religious aspect of their journey to the holy land, some of them have embarked on shopping.
They claimed that the materials were meant to serve as gifts for their families and friends at home.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent in Madinah reports that the least article available for purchase as gift is 5 riyad, equivalent to N500.
Many pilgrims, however, told NAN that they had engaged in serious prayer for peace in Nigeria, besides doing so for their families and friends.
Some said they made friends among fellow Muslims from other parts of the world.
According to them, Islam is a religion of peace, which enjoins its adherents to show love to others, irrespective of religious, tribe and colour. (NAN)
The Senate says it will invite the Ministry of Petroleum Resources Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to explain the status of refineries, including the new modular refineries, across the country.
The decision followed a motion on Tuesday entitled “Existing Petroleum Subsidy: Ensuring Self -Sufficiency in Domestic Refining of Petroleum Products’’, by Sen. Rose Oko (PDP – Cross River).
The Senate, in a voice vote, urged the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream and Upstream) when constituted, to report back to the Senate in that regard.
Speaking on the motion at the plenary, Oko said that although Nigeria produced 1.7 million barrels of crude oil per day, refineries’ performance was insignificant.
According to her, Nigeria imports more than 90 per cent of its fuel, negating much of the benefits accruing to oil producing nations from high crude prices.
She said that in spite of resources expended on Turn Around Maintenance of the refineries, none of the them could perform optimally.
She said that data from the Department of Petroleum Resources website indicated that a total of 633,000 barrels per day refining capacity had already been lost due to the expiration of licenses of both conventional and modular refinery projects.
Oko also expressed concern that more than 160 million dollars was spent on subsidy in early 2017.
She said that the government introduced petroleum subsidy in the 1980s as a measure to strengthen local refining industry and improve product affordability and domestic consumption.
The senator added that successive administrations had, however, failed to make Nigeria self-sufficient in domestic production.
Oko said that there was no form of technical and financial aid for refinery license holders to ensure the refineries become operational.
No few than 42 senators supported the motion, including Sen. Barau Jibril, Sen. Thompson Sekibo, Sen, Ifeanyi Uba and Sen. Ali Ndume.
In his remark, President of the Senate, Dr Ahmad Lawan, said that the motion was aimed at ensuring that the 43 licensed modular refineries became operational.
He also observed that the Petroleum Industry Bill was also key to the optimal utilisation of the refineries and emergence of the modular refineries.(NAN)
Managing director and Chief Executive of Dangote Cement, Eng. Joe Makoju has assured the customers of the determination of the Management to always add value and work towards making them happy always.
Speaking recently in Ibadan at the car presentation ceremony for the on-going Dangote Cement’s Bag of Goodies Promo, Makoju said the ongoing Promo is a way of giving back to society, especially the customers, noting that the company would have folded if not for the support and continuous patronage of its teeming customers.
According to him: “We appreciate our customers. We love them. As a company, we have decided to always look for ways to make them happy and one of the ways is what we are here for today. This promo is to enrich our customers as more than N200 million in cash will be won as well as other laudable gifts. We also love our shareholders, they have faith in us, hence their investment in our company and as you can see, we are also in the business of enhancing the value of their investments. We will continue to make our customers happy and also enrich our shareholders. That is our resolve as a company.”
Two customers have already won brand new saloon cars in the ongoing Dangote Cement’s new promo tagged” Bags of Goodies”.
An Abraka Delta State-based cement retailer, Benjamin Igherighe was the first car winner, while a Youth Corper, Godwin Chimezie Success was the second car winner in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The “Bag of Goodies” for customers contains valuable items like Cars, Tricycles, Motorbikes, TV Sets, Refrigerators and cash gifts among others. The first of its kind promo was launched the first week in July in Lagos.
Director, Sales and Marketing, Dangote Cement Plc, Mrs. Funmi Sanni, said the promo was a new initiative in the cement industry for customers in Nigeria. “We are here to change the narratives in the industry. We do everything with our customers in mind. We want to appreciate them for their loyalty to the brand in the past years.”
Sanni, however, hinted that it was not the first time Dangote Cement would be reaching out to its stakeholders in the business. She revealed that the company had in the past years contributed to the growth of its distributors and retailers, who have received items such as distribution trucks and Containers to display their products.
“Inside the Dangote Bag of Goodies are goodies that are carefully chosen to change the lives of 21million customers who will win in the promo. All the items can fetch money for the winners if deployed to start small scale businesses,” she enthused.
Sanni, who listed star prizes in the promo to include 43 cars, 24 tricycles, 24 motorcycles, 550 refrigerators, 400 television sets, 300,000 Dangote foods goodies packs and N200million worth of recharge cards said all prizes will be given directly to winners and not channeled through retailers and distributors of Dangote Cement. “We have created 200 redemption centers across the nation where participants in the promo can visit to claim their gifts instantly.”
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Adamu, updated President Muhammadu Buhari on security developments across the country, particularly the activities of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as Shiite.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that a senior Police officer, DCP Usman Umar, officer in charge of operations at the FCT Police Command, was among those feared dead in the violent protest by the Shiite members, on Monday in Abuja.
Reports indicated that the Police officer was killed by the rioters as he tried to pacify them when they attempted to disrupt commercial activities and vehicular around the Federal Secretariat, Abuja.
The IGP, who spoke to State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa, said that he briefed him on the incessant and violent activities of members of the IMN.
“We came to brief Mr President on the security situation in the country, especially the activities of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN); just to give him an update of what is happening in the country.
“Specifically, we briefed him on the incessant protests by the Shiite members. We briefed him on the fact that we have been able to curtail their excesses and to let him understand that everything is under control,’’ he said.
On the President’s reaction, the IGP said that he directed that security be provided for every citizen.
“He specifically directed us not to leave any space for any group of people to create a breakdown of law and order.
“So, the charge by Mr President is that we must provide security for every Nigerian,” the Police boss said.
NAN reports that the Shiite members, who are demanding the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, who has been in detention since 2015, clashed with security operatives at the Federal Secretariat, at about 1.30 p.m Monday,July 22, 2019 in Abuja
Sources indicated that Umar had been buried in Abuja. (NAN)

Amnesty and the power of the new WordPress editor
In the short video below, you’ll see a quick overview of what it’s like to build new sites quickly and publish and manage content in Amnesty’s new platform launching in September.
See how Big Bite’s custom blocks streamline publishing for Amnesty International.
Agency partner Big Bite has built an entirely new site platform for Nobel Peace Prize Winner Amnesty International, with the new WordPress editor as its foundation, via the Gutenberg plugin. They focused on developing custom blocks and a core theme that serves as the heart of Amnesty’s digital efforts moving forward. More than a new site, this is a framework for applying consistent brand identity, design, and user experience standards to many new sites and for allowing creators to spin up new, powerful sites quickly and with ease. And as a part of Big Bite’s and Amnesty’s shared commitment to giving back to the community, large parts of the project will be released as open source components for anyone to use.
“Whoa, how do I do that?”
We knew you’d ask that and we have you covered! We developed a series of educational videos for both users and developers that are working with Gutenberg. These address questions such as converting ACF and CMB2 to Gutenberg and how to control access to blocks.

It's like we read your mind. We developed the Gutenberg Ramp plugin for just this reason. On your VIP Go sites, you can now load Gutenberg everywhere, or selectively by post ID (load only for specific posts) and post type (load only for specific post types). Find complete instructions at this helpful page.
We recommend that you load it up in a VIP Go development environment first. If you don’t have a development environment on which to test, now’s a great time to get one set up. Just open up a ticket with our Support team and we can get a development site set up for you. Unless otherwise requested, we’ll sync the content from your live site so you can get a true sense of how Gutenberg will work for you. If you already have a development environment and would prefer not to disturb that, we can create an additional Gutenberg testing environment instead. Not to worry, in either case content changes here will not affect the content on your live site.
As exciting as it is, we know very well that many of you have extensive integrations with the current WordPress editor and will want a gradual transition. We are here to help you evaluate the impacts ahead of the WordPress.com 5.0 rollout, test out the new components in their current state, plan a smooth transition, and make decisions about the best way to update your roadmaps.
“I’m totally ready to use this but uh, my friend isn’t. My friend wants to know what happens when WordPress 5.0 is released.”

The United States (U.S.) Department has imposed visa restrictions on Nigerians who were involved in trying to or undermined democracy in the concluded 2019 presidential and parliamentary elections.
It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari won a second term in office in February in an election characterized by logistical problems, violence and killings.
The department, however, did not list the names of the individuals or say how many were affected by the visa ban, but it clearly pointed out that it was for those who undermined the process.
Morgan Ortagus, spokeswoman of the department said: “These individuals have operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and undermined democratic principles and human rights.
“The Department of State emphasises that the actions announced today are specific to certain individuals and not directed at the Nigerian people or the newly elected government,” Ortagus added.
