Chinese researchers have used iPS cells to regenerate retina, which holds the potential to develop new therapies for some blinding diseases such as retinal degeneration.
The iPS cells are a type of pluripotent stem cell artificially derived from a non-pluripotent cell. It can be induced to have the same genetic information as early embryonic cells.
Researchers from China’s Central South University made iPS cells from somatic cells in the patients’ urine or blood and induced the iPS cells to differentiate into RPE cells, a layer of cells in the back of the eye.
According to the research published in the journal, Acta Biomaterialia, the RPE cells can form an ultra-thin layer of structure similar to the retina.
In future studies, the researchers plan to transplant the structure behind the patient’s retina to see if it can fix the patient’s vision.
Since the iPS cells are derived from the patient’s cells, immune rejection of cell transplantation is avoided.
The retinal degeneration, which may lead to permanent blindness, is one of the most common eye diseases among people over the age of 50 NAN.

Amnesty and the power of the new WordPress editor
In the short video below, you’ll see a quick overview of what it’s like to build new sites quickly and publish and manage content in Amnesty’s new platform launching in September.
Agency partner Big Bite has built an entirely new site platform for Nobel Peace Prize Winner Amnesty International, with the new WordPress editor as its foundation, via the Gutenberg plugin. They focused on developing custom blocks and a core theme that serves as the heart of Amnesty’s digital efforts moving forward. More than a new site, this is a framework for applying consistent brand identity, design, and user experience standards to many new sites and for allowing creators to spin up new, powerful sites quickly and with ease. And as a part of Big Bite’s and Amnesty’s shared commitment to giving back to the community, large parts of the project will be released as open source components for anyone to use.
“Whoa, how do I do that?”

It's like we read your mind. We developed the Gutenberg Ramp plugin for just this reason. On your VIP Go sites, you can now load Gutenberg everywhere, or selectively by post ID (load only for specific posts) and post type (load only for specific post types). Find complete instructions at this helpful page.
We recommend that you load it up in a VIP Go development environment first. If you don’t have a development environment on which to test, now’s a great time to get one set up. Just open up a ticket with our Support team and we can get a development site set up for you. Unless otherwise requested, we’ll sync the content from your live site so you can get a true sense of how Gutenberg will work for you. If you already have a development environment and would prefer not to disturb that, we can create an additional Gutenberg testing environment instead. Not to worry, in either case content changes here will not affect the content on your live site.

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has said that documenting immigrants will ensure proper planning and assist in the security of lives and property in the country.
The governor stated this on Tuesday when the Comptroller-General of Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Mr Mohammad Babandede, visited him in Asaba.
He said that documenting the aliens was part of appropriate reforms to be taken for the benefit of Nigerians and the country.
“It is very important both for security purposes and for our population plan, for foreigners to be documented.
“Without appropriate documentation, it can impact negatively on the planning for the nation when it comes to taking care of our people.
“So, without the right account of our people, our resources will become depleted and planning will be affected drastically,” he said.

The governor added, “We must congratulate you on the immigrant reform.
“I think it is important for us as a nation because you find out that people from other countries just come into our country and settle in any part of the nation.
“They are not documented in any manner and that is not good for a nation because if they commit crimes, they cannot be traced.
“It is important that even without people committing crime, we should have documentation of foreigners in our country”.
He commended NIS for initiating other landmark reforms, particularly the e-passport which would be tied down to national identity.
“It is something that is very innovative, something that I believe can really help us in national security.
“This is because, people bearing all manner of names and people with more than one passport will surely become a thing of the past.
“So, we want to thank you for thinking about this thoroughly and bringing up this reform,” he said.
The governor assured the Service of his administration’s support in rendering vital services to Deltans and Nigerians in general.
Earlier, Babandede had said that he was in Delta to commission some projects.
He commended the governor for his administration’s numerous support for NIS.
The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, on Tuesday sought the assistance of the British High Commission in Nigeria to help in capacity enhancement for the lawmakers.
Lawan, in a statement by Isa Mohammed, the Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President of the Senate, made the call while receiving the High Commissioner, Catriona Laing, in his office.
“Our committees, when we constitute them, we will need your support.
“We want some kind of support for capacity building through the Department for International Development(DfID) which is the British Department responsible for administering overseas aid.
“So, we want to appeal to you that you consider that for our committees when they are constituted. We ask for support.
“The committees are the engine room of our legislature; we need support for the committees to perform well,” he said.
The senate president said National Assembly believes that the economy must work for everybody, including the lowest in the society.
“The vulnerable, the most disadvantaged, youths who have graduated from universities and yet have no jobs. We must create employment opportunity for them,” Lawan said.
He told his guest that Nigeria, for long, had depended on oil, but now seeks to diversify the economy like other countries.
Earlier, Laing said her mission was to congratulate the senate president, whom she met in the build up to his election.
She said that British Government was ready to collaborate with the National Assembly with regards to some key bills like the Police Reforms Bill, Electoral Act Amendment Bill and Petroleum Industry Bill. (NAN)
