Senators dismiss Trump’s plan for Gaza

Arabs have also denounced Trump’s plan

TEL AVIV, Feb 17 (Reuters) – U.S. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham dismissed on Monday President Donald Trump’s proposal to seize Gaza and force out the Palestinians, while Democrat Senator Richard Blumenthal said he expects Arab states to put forward a workable alternative.

The prominent lawmakers were among a bipartisan group of U.S. senators who earlier met in Tel Aviv with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who on Sunday repeated his backing for Trump’s controversial vision for Gaza.

Israeli officials have latched onto Trump’s proposal, with Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz instructing the military to prepare a plan that would allow for Palestinians in Gaza to leave voluntarily.

But Graham, a longtime ally of Trump and a key Republican in Congress with influence on foreign policy and national security matters, told reporters there was little appetite in the Senate “for America to take over Gaza in any way, shape or form.”

Blumenthal simply said the plan was a “non-starter.”

Trump’s proposal has been widely denounced by Arab officials, while some critics have said it equates to ethnic cleansing. Netanyahu as recently as Monday said that the Palestinians in Gaza should be given the choice to leave.

Katz said on Monday that he would establish a directorate within the ministry for the voluntary departure of Palestinians from Gaza.

“The one thing that President Trump has done, he started a discussion that was long overdue,” Graham said, saying that Arab states had “woken up” to finding a better alternative for Gaza.

Saudi, Emirati, Jordanian and Egyptian officials are expected to meet as soon as this month to discuss the future of Gaza, hoping to devise a plan to counter Trump’s proposal that has rattled nearly all Arab capitals after 16 months of war in Gaza.

Blumenthal said Jordan’s King Abdullah had convinced him that Arab states would present a plan that covers normalising ties with Israel, self-determination for the Palestinians, regional defense arrangements and security for Israel.

“If those components are part of a realistic plan, it could be a game changer for the region,” he said.

Alleged N1.1bn fraud: ICPC arraigns NSCDC deputy commandant

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Monday, arraigned Adam Yusuf, a Deputy Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), over alleged N1.1 billion money laundering offences.

Yusuf was arraigned alongside a company, Ummays Hummayd Energy Ltd, allegedly operated by him, before Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja on three-count amended charge.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that while Yusuf is the 1st defendant in the charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/158/2023, the company is the 2nd defendant.

The duo pleaded not guilty to the counts when they were read to them.
In count one, Yusuf was alleged to have, sometime in January 2020 or thereabout in Abuja while being a staff of NSCDC, taken possession of the sum of N410 million deposited into his Zenith Bank account number: 2219799630 by Gate Coast Properties International Limited.
In count two, Yusuf was alleged to have, sometime in January 2020 or thereabout in Abuja, taken possession of the sum of N150 million deposited into his Zenith Bank account number 2219799630 by Lahab Integrated & Multi-Services Limited.
Count three accused Yusuf and Ummays Hummayd Energy Ltd of taken possession of N540 million deposited by Lahab Integrated & Multi Services into the Zenith Bank account number: 1016516200 of the company operated by him.
The funds were said to form part of the proceeds of an unlawful activity and the offences were contrary to Section 18(2)(d) and punishable under Section 18(3) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022.
Earlier when the matter was called, ICPC’s lawyer, Osuobeni Akponimisingha, informed the court that they had a motion on notice dated Feb. 10 but filed Feb. 11, seeking to amend their charge.
Abdul Mohammed, SAN, who represented the defendants in court, did not oppose the application and the judge granted the leave to amend.
Akponimisingha therefore sought the leave of the court for the amended charge, dated Feb. 10 but filed Feb. 11, to be read to Yusuf and his company for them to take their plea.
After they pleaded not guilty to the charge, Mohammed drew the attention of the court to the bail application filed on Feb. 13.
The senior lawyer said the motion sought the discretionary power of the court to admit his client to bail.
Although Akponimisingha initially opposed the application citing alleged refusal of Yusuf to stand his trial, he however withdrew his objection later.
Ruling, Justice Ekwo who said he was minded to exercise the discretion in favour of Yusuf, admitted him to a N30 million bail.
The judge also ordered him to produce one surety who must be a responsible citizen and owner of a landed property within the jurisdiction of the court and not below the value of the bail sum.
The judge said the property should be verified by the registrar and the defendant should deposit his international passport and must not travel outside the jurisdiction without the permission of the court.
When Justice Ekwo asked the anti-graft agency’s lawyer how many witnesses they would be calling, Akponimisingha said seven witnesses.
He said all the witnesses were within the jurisdiction of the court.
The judge adjourned the matter until May 6, May 7 and May 8 for trial.
NAN reports that in the earlier charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/158/2023 filed by the ICPC and scheduled on Monday’s cause list, Vice Admiral Jibrin Usman Oyibe and five others were in the charge.
The five others include Adam Imam Yusuf, Brigadier-General Ishaya Gamgum Bauka, Lahab Integrated & Multi Service Ltd, Gate Coast Properties International Ltd and Ummays Hummayd Energy Ltd as 2nd to 6th defendants respectively.
The ICPC had, on Feb. 7, announced the arrest of Adam Yusuf in connection to an allegations bordering on N3 billion public fund diversion.
The commission revealed that its investigation showed that Jibrin Usman, a former Chief of Naval staff, orchestrated the theft through Yusuf and Ishaya Bauka Gangum, a retired Brigadier of the Nigerian Army.
It said its investigation further revealed that the three civil servants orchestrated the diversion by using 92 fictitious companies that were not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).
The agency also said that Yusuf was at large before he was arrested in his residence in Abuja and then taken into custody.
It alleged that the three defendants acquired 18 properties, including filling stations, through these companies.
The ICPC stated that other suspects in the case were at large.

The Osun State Caucus in the 10th National Assembly has accused the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, of allegedly masterminding the move to violently take over local government secretariats across the state.

Describing the development as a clear invitation to anarchy, the lawmakers alleged that the move is being orchestrated by Oyetola despite a subsisting court judgment affirming the removal of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-backed local government officials.

The forum accused Oyetola, who is the immediate past governor of the state, of conniving with the Commissioner of Police, the Director of State Security Service (SSS), and the State Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) to unleash mayhem in Osun.

Members of the caucus include Deputy Senate Minority Leader, Senator Akogun Olalere Oyewumi, Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi, and Senator Olubiyi Fadeyi Ajagunnla.

Others are Hon. Bamidele Salami, Hon. Busayo Oluwole Oke, Hon. Taofeek Abimbola Ajilesoro, Hon. Clement Akanni Olohunwa, Hon. Soji Adetunji, Hon. Adebayo Morufu Adewale, Hon. Mudashiru Lukman, Hon. Lanre Oladebo, and Hon. Sanya Omirin.

Speaking at a press conference on behalf of his colleagues at the National Assembly complex in Abuja on Monday, lawmaker representing Ede North/Ede South/Ejigbo/Egbedore federal constituency, Bamidele Salami, condemned the “brazen effrontery of the sacked Local Government Council officials to return to office notwithstanding the yet-to-be-set-aside decision of the Court of Appeal, Akure, against their return to the office.”

On Monday, several people were injured across local government areas of Osun State as a crisis rocked the state over the controversy surrounding the Appeal Court judgment on sacked local government chairmen in the state.

    – Tambuwal’s statement follows remarks by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, who dismissed Tambuwal’s concerns over recent defections as baseless.

Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former Sokoto State Governor and current federal lawmaker, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of using coercion and propaganda to force defections from the opposition.

He described the APC’s latest attack on him as an attempt to stifle dissent and divert attention from Nigeria’s worsening crisis.

Tambuwal’s statement follows remarks by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, who dismissed Tambuwal’s concerns over recent defections as baseless.

However, the senator insists that the movement of politicians into the APC is not driven by ideological conviction but by desperation amid the crushing economic hardship inflicted by the ruling party’s failed policies.

“The APC wants to deceive Nigerians into believing that these defections are proof of good governance. The truth is that life under this administration has become unbearable — inflation is skyrocketing, insecurity is worsening, and unemployment is deepening.

“Nigerians know that the APC thrives on propaganda, not performance,” Tambuwal declared.

He further warned that the ruling party’s tactics of intimidation and enticement pose a serious threat to democracy, likening the APC’s strategy to the foundation of a one-party authoritarian state.

“APC leaders have abandoned governance and now focus on deploying stomach infrastructure to lure struggling politicians. This is not democracy — it is survival politics,” he added.

The senator, who played a pivotal role in the formation of the APC while serving as Speaker of the House of Representatives, lamented that the party has lost its way due to the influence of self-serving individuals who care little about the masses.

Tambuwal urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, warning that the country stands at a crossroads where critical decisions must be made to reclaim governance from those who have turned it into a machinery for personal gain.

“The APC should stop attacking those who speak the truth and focus on fixing the mess they have created.

”Nigeria needs real leadership, not a party that weaponises hunger and hardship to retain power.”

Osun: Sacked Irewole chairman, 2 others shot dead by thugs

The sacked chairman of Irewole Local Government, Osun State, Remi Abass, has been shot dead by unknown gunmen at the local government secretariat in Ikire.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the secretariat in broad daylight on Monday, firing multiple gunshots.

“It was sudden and chaotic. People ran for safety,” said a local resident who requested anonymity.

The Osun State Police Command confirmed the incident and stated that investigations had begun. “We are working to apprehend the perpetrators and restore calm in the area,” said Police Public Relations Officer, SP Yemisi Opalola.

Abass was among the local government chairmen, elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, sacked by the Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo in November 2022.

Meanwhile, two persons have also been confirmed dead in Boripe LGA of the state over the fracas that erupted when some hoodlums allegedly working for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the All Progressives Congress, APC, attempted to take over the council.

The victims, whose names were given as Ege and Igara, according to eyewitnesses, were shot dead by hoodlums.

It was gathered that Ege, who decamped from the APC to the PDP recently, was the only son of his parents, with his father also said to be a member of the PDP.

One other person whose name was given as Yinka, a photographer, was also shot and is currently in critical condition at an undisclosed hospital, DAILY POST reliably gathered.

The situation has caused panic in the area as residents scamper for safety.

  • FG’s N100 bn real estate financing scheme will boost home ownership in Nigeria – TDF

FG’s N100 bn real estate financing scheme will boost home ownership in Nigeria – TDF

    By Iyiola Olalere

The Democratic Front (TDF) has described the N100bn MOFI Real Estate Investment Fund as a creative initiative by the Tinubu administration to ensure affordable housing options for low-income individuals and families.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Mallam Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, TDF expressed its conviction that the government-backed initiative will help bridge Nigeria’s housing deficit.

It said: “The recent launch of a N100 billion private sector led real estate financing scheme by the Federal Government, is yet another show of commitment by President Bola Tinubu to increase accessibility to homeownership for Nigerians.

“The benefits contained in the financing scheme for affordable mortgage loans are obvious. It has a repayment period of up to 25 years and an interest rate set at between 11 and 12 per cent, which is significantly lower than the rates offered by commercial banks.

“So we see it as a good initiative that will attract key private sector players, and trigger investment activities that will help reduce Nigeria’s housing deficit, currently put at 21 million.

“We acknowledge that several administrations governments including the present one, have been involved in different housing projects in Nigeria, but we see this initiative as a notable one in the development of the real estate sector of the economy.

“For us, it aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, especially as it is structured to mobilise private sector investment in the housing sector.

“In addition to other social security benefits of the new housing financing scheme, the inclusion of pensioners on the list of beneficiaries will further discourage civil and public servants from the temptation of stealing public funds to build homes after retirement, thereby reducing the propensity for corruption in government.

“We also envisage that this commendable approach of real estate financing scheme will have a multiplier effect on the sector by way of reducing risks for private lenders and improving regulatory oversight to ensure that estate developments are safe, sustainable and in compliance with quality regulations.”

TDF urged Nigerians to embrace the ongoing economic reforms and avail themselves of the benefits and advantages inherent in the policies of the Tinubu administration.

  • Adeleke Cautions Oyetola Against Formenting Public Disorder in Osun

Adeleke Cautions Oyetola Against Formenting Public Disorder in Osun

    By Biola Lawal
Oshogbo: Flowerbudnews: Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has cautioned his predecessor, Alh. Gboyega Oyetola against endangering public peace in Osun state by attempting to o enforce ‘:a non-existing court judgment on our local governments’:

Gov. Adeleke gave the warning during a press conference he addressed over the weekend on the alleged threat by Alh.Oyetola to create confusion in Local Government administration in the state:

Below is the FULL TEXT of the Governor’s speech:

    Gentlemen of the press

I called this press conference to alert the national and global audience about a deliberate plot to create chaos and anarchy in Osun state. I invite you all to expose a fascist anti-democratic agenda designed to enforce a non-existing court judgment on our local governments.

This evil plot is being spearheaded by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy,  Mr Gboyega Oyetola in active collaboration with the Osun state Commissioner of Police, the Osun state Director of DSS and the State Commandant of the Civil Defense Corps.

Before I continue this address, let me affirm that I know Mr. President to be a true democrat, a lover of rule of law, and a believer in the sanctity of the judicial process.

I know, as a matter of fact, that Mr. President will never authorise a dictatorial violation of the constitution irrespective of who is involved. It is crucial to add that Mr. President will never support any action that is capable of generating bloodbath and bloodshed.

I, however, regret to inform Mr. President and the public that Mr Gboyega Oyetola has concluded an arrangement to cause mayhem in Osun state starting from Monday. He is issuing illegal directives to security operatives to enforce illegality simply because he is the nephew of Mr. President.

I chose to alert the nation before my people are killed or maimed by a minister  dropping the name of Mr. President in connivance with the Osun state security operatives obeying unlawful orders.

The bone of contention is the brazen effrontery to return to office council chairmen sacked  by a subsisting court Judgment using a different court decision, which has no consequential order.

Let me make it clear that the said Council Chairmen were sacked before I was sworn in as governor of Osun State, contrary to the lies being peddled, that the Chairmen and councilors were sacked by my Executive Order.

For emphasis, l want to state that I had nothing to do with the sacking of the chairmen and councilors produced by the Osun 2022 local government polls. The Chairmen and Councilors were sacked by two different judgments of the Federal High Court Osogbo.

The script Mr Oyetola is playing is about the most reprehensible abuse of power in this fourth republic capable of untold and unforeseen consequences on the polity.

The general public is aware that there were two different Federal  High Court judgments on the local government election of 2022. The first judgment was on the suit filed by the People Democratic Party (PDP) which sacked the product of the  2022 polls.

The second judgment was on the suit filed by the Action People Party (APP), which also sacked the Chairmen and Councillors produced by the said 2022 Osun Local Government polls.

The APC appeal against the judgment obtained by the PDP was partially successful, and the said judgment was struck out  based on the timing of filing, having been filed before the notice of election was published.

It needs to be emphasized that the judgment contains no consequential orders. The APC in its amended notice of Appeal, asked the Court of Appeal to reinstate the sacked chairmen and councilors, but the Court of Appeal in its wisdom said it has become an academic exercise. The request for the reinstatement of the Chairmen and Councilors was not granted.

However, the Appeal by the APC against the APP judgment did not succeed at the Court of Appeal, which makes the judgment still subsisting and alive.

The Court of Appeal dismissed the APC appeal against the judgment obtained by the APP.  The only legal recourse open to the APC is to appeal the APP judgment and the subsequent rulings of the Court of Appeal to the Supreme Court.

The Certified True Copies of both judgements had earlier been forwarded to the Osun state Commissioner of Police, the State Director of DSS and the state Commandant of Civil Defense by the Osun state Attorney General for their information and records.

The Certified True Copies of  both judgments are in the public domain. The judgment of the Court of Appeal on the PDP case was not ambiguous whatsoever. It simply struck out the PDP suit and did not in any of its paragraphs order the reinstatement of the sacked council chairmen and Councilors.

It is very clear that no consequential order was made because the APP case is still subsisting. As I stated earlier, the Court of Appeal said that the request for the reinstatement of the Chairmen and Councilors has become an academic exercise.

We call on legal luminaries and the Nigerian Bar Association  to fact check our claims by reading and interpreting the judgments. Even a layman can comprehend the meaning except those with an agenda to destroy the peace and progress of Osun state.

In a democratic society governed by the rule of  law, we all must submit to the law. If we are dissatisfied with the outcome of a court process, we can appeal to the next court to end at the Supreme Court. If you are not sure of the meaning and intent of a court judgment, the system expects you to apply for interpretation again through the court system.

It is illegal, unconstitutional, and anti-democratic to take the law into your own hands. For a serving minister, the person of Mr Gboyega Oyetola to lead the charge to violate the constitution and foment violence over a judicial process is not only shameful but is sadism and treason taken too far.

We have it on good authority that  Mr Gboyega Oyetola  has instructed the Osun state Commissioner of Police,  the state Director of the DSS and the state Commandant of civil defence corps to mobilise security operatives from within Osun to effect the non existent judgement by forcefully taking over the local governments on Monday.

Mr Oyetola and the police boss have been holding a series of meetings on how to effect the illegal operations.

We affirm that Mr Gboyega Oyetola has no constitutional authority to issue directives to the security agencies.

The fact that Mr Oyetola is nephew of Mr. President does not confer any such authority on him.

We see this as a gross betrayal  of trust reposed in the Osun state security officers by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

I want to state that the current nefarious activities of Mr Oyetola and bosses of Osun security agencies constitute grave incitement. These need to stop because we are  neither  interested in resorting to self-help nor in support of violence to resolve political matters.  As much as we are law-abiding people, we are fierce protectors of our rights, at night and by the day.

I want to place on notice the Nigerian Public, and our friends in the diplomatic community and the lovers of democracy and rule of law that our people will not accept any attempt to impose illegality and anarchy on us.

We will not allow any takeover of the local government except through a judicial pronouncement or a democratic process.

We vehemently reject any ploy to deploy a non-existing court order to achieve local political power.

I therefore appeal to  Mr President who is a renown democrat to insist on the rule of law by instructing the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of DSS, the Commandant General of the Civil Defense Corps not to obey an illegal  order from his nephew, Mr Gboyega Oyetola. The Osun State security chiefs should also be called to order.

I call on Mr President, to instruct the National Security Adviser, and the Attorney General of the Federation, to personally verify the fact that the Court of Appeal judgement did not reinstate the sacked local government chairmen and councilors and the fact that, there is a subsisting judgement of Court that sacked the Chairmen and Councillors  produced by the 2022 local government polls.

The Nigerian public should hold Mr Gboyega Oyetola and the Osun state security chiefs responsible for any breakdown of law and order in the state tomorrow, Monday, and beyond.

It is unfortunate that the Osun state security chiefs are taking instructions from Mr Gboyega Oyetola just because he is the nephew of Mr. President.

As much as we will do our best to maintain peace, we call on men and women of goodwill to intervene before it is too late.

    I thank you for listening

  • Peter Obi calls for re-opening of Onitsha markets

Peter Obi calls for re-opening of Onitsha markets

    Flowerbudnews

Lagos:   Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in 2023 Election, has called for the reopening of the Head Bridge market and adjoining markets in Onitsha which were closed over alleged illicit drug transactions.

He said the continued shut down of the markets was adversely affecting the livelihood of millions of the traders.

Obi made the call in a statement titled “Closure of Head Bridge Market: A Call for Reconsideration of Position “ posted on his X handle on Monday.

The statement reads: “The entire Head Bridge Market in Onitsha has been closed by regulatory and security agencies due to suspected trading in illegal drugs within one section of the market known as Ogbo Ogwu.

“While one unequivocally condemns such illicit drug trading activities and urges the government to take all necessary measures to eradicate the sale of fake item, especially drugs and legally prosecute the perpetrators for the health and safety of society, my concern and appeal are for the immediate reopening of neighbouring markets that were also collaterally affected by the closure.

“Shutting down other neighboring markets not involved in addition to the Ogbo Ogwu Market such as Rod, Allied and Tools, Plumbing Materials, Timber, Surgical, and Provision Markets seems excessive and unjustified

“I, therefore, appeal for their immediate reopening, as their continued closure is severely affecting the livelihoods of millions, especially during this difficult period in our country.

“Furthermore, the search should be conducted transparently, with store owners present while their shops are inspected and items removed by the law and due process.

“If the goal is to conduct a legitimate search, why extend the closure to other markets? What are their offences?

“During my tenure as Governor of Anambra state, we faced similar situations multiple times.

“Whenever we encountered public health threats, we addressed them collaboratively and methodically with the relevant agencies. In cases requiring market interventions, we worked closely with regulatory authorities and security agencies, ensuring fairness and due process.

“This approach prevented unnecessary disruptions and safeguarded livelihoods.

” The current strategy should be reconsidered to prevent undue hardship on traders, their families, and the state’s economy.

“A more balanced and transparent approach will enhance both security and economic stability.

“While pursuing the end of enhanced public health, we should not lose sight of the collateral economic effects of adjacent market closures should be kept in view always. -PO.”
