Abuja: The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has congratulated Hajiya Hadiza Mohammed-Aliyu on her appointment as Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), describing it as commendable and deserved recognition.
NUSA’s President-General, Chief Prince Nwobi, and Secretary-General, Mr Jola-Michael Abayomi, said this in a statement issued by the organisation to NAN on Saturday, saying the appointment would further strengthen NAN.
The union described Mohammed-Aliyu’s appointment as “right step in the right direction” toward advancing the agency’s productivity, and commended her professional record and leadership experience supporting NAN’s continued growth and development.
“We convey our warmest congratulations to you on your appointment as EIC of NAN,” it said, adding that the achievement reflected sustained excellence and commitment throughout her career at NAN.
“Your elevation to this office is a well-deserved recognition of three and a half decades of diligence, professionalism and integrity in the service of the agency,” it said.
The union said Mohammed-Aliyu’s experience across NAN’s Editorial Department, Control Desk, Entertainment, Science and Technology, and Health and Gender Desks would further strengthen her administrative effectiveness in office and leadership overall.
It also lauded Mohammed-Aliyu as the first woman to lead NAN’s editorial team in more than four decades, calling her historic appointment a landmark achievement for Nigerian journalism across Nigeria.
The union said the achievement would inspire countless colleagues across the Nigerian media landscape, particularly women seeking greater representation, leadership opportunities and recognition within the profession across Nigeria and beyond.
It further expressed confidence that NAN would maintain its reputation as a trusted source of authentic, objective and balanced news under Mohammed-Aliyu’s stewardship through rigorous reporting, investigation and verification practices nationwide.
“Your record of coordinating the NAN/UNFPA project between 2019 and 2024 speaks to a capacity for partnership and delivery that we believe will define your tenure,” it said.
The union prayed for a successful, fulfilling and productive tenure, while expressing hope for a smooth, cordial and mutually beneficial working relationship with NAN’s editorial team during her tenure.
It assured the EIC of the union’s full cooperation and support as she assumed her new assignment, pledging continued partnership and constructive engagement in advancing NAN’s mandate and strengthening professional standards.(NAN)
