The management of Federal Polytechnic, Ede, Osun State, have ratified the recommendation of the ad hoc committee set up on the expelled students by converting their rustication into suspension for the 2023 /24 academic session.
The chairman of the council, Professor Taiwo Olaiya disclosed this while briefing the newsmen about the resolution taken by the committee to pardon the affected students.
According to him, On August 21, the council led by Prof. Olaiya promised to look into the pleas of well meaning Nigerians to temper justice with mercy by reviewing the earlier sanctions.
“The school management had on July 27, announced the explosions of 27 students and suspension of eight others over their roles in the May 9 violent protest in the institution.
“In May this year, there was an unfortunate situation in the campus, where some set of students were trying to raise a dust in an improper way. As their profiles were given, the authority ordered for their rustication and suspension”, he added.
The students according to the findings, had protested against the arrest of their colleagues by the operatives of EFCC in Owode – Ede , a community in the Local Government Area of the institution.
He said the institution under his watch will not relent in pursuit of excellence hence the approval of the committee’s immediate reinstatement of the suspended students and a-one session suspension for the earlier rusticated students.
According to him, for those who were earlier suspended, they have been fully pardoned with a warning not to involve themselves in such act again and will write letter of apology to the management before they can fully resume.
The council also lifted the ban on the students union activities on the campus and directed the school management to constitute faculty representative that would see to the affairs of the union till the end of the season.
“To forestall future reccorent act of indiscipline and serve as deterent, the council approved the recommendation of the committee that reparations levies of N10,000 should be paid by all students,” he said.
Meanwhile, a staff in the campus who spoke to Flowerbudnews on the condition of anonymity, called on the pardoned students not to take advantage of the governing council’s mercy to further indulge in an unwanted activities that would cause tension and destruction in and outside the school.
He said: “the institution is established because of you, we would have no business if you are not here, so your problems are our problems and whenever you spotted any, channel it to appropriate channel.”
