Oyetola, Agbakoba, Omatseye headline 2026 SCAN summit in Lagos
Lagos, Oct. 26, 2026 (NAN) The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, will attend the 2026 summit of Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria as Special Guest of Honour.
The summit is scheduled for Oct. 29 at Rockview Hotels, Apapa, Lagos, with focus on theme, “Low-Risk Capital for Indigenous Shipowners: Overcoming Regulatory, Financial Bottlenecks.”
The President of SCAN, Mr Moses Ebosele, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos, saying all arrangements had been concluded.
Ebosele said the gathering would bring together government officials, maritime regulators, financial institutions, experts and shipowners to examine affordable financing strategies.
He said Oyetola’s participation comes amid growing calls for improved funding and enabling regulatory environment to support indigenous shipowners and expand local fleet capacity.
The SCAN president said the event would hold under distinguished chairmanship of Mr Temisan Omatseye, former Director-General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA.
He said the keynote speaker is Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), Founding Partner, Olisa Agbakoba Legal and former President, Nigerian Bar Association.
Ebosele said in spite of Nigeria’s rich maritime potential, foreign operators continue to dominate carriage of imports, exports and freight earnings.
He said foreign operators control over 95 per cent of Nigerian cargo carriage, while indigenous shipowners capture only about four to five per cent of market.
The Chairman, Organising Committee, Mr Yusuf Babalola, said the summit provides opportunity for stakeholders to brainstorm on permanent solutions to financing challenges.
Babalola said low-risk capital remained critical to growing indigenous fleet, creating jobs and retaining freight earnings within Nigerian economy.
He listed other expected dignitaries to include Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, and Director-General of NPERA, Dr Pius Akutah.
He also listed Director-General of NIMASA, Dr Dayo Mobereola, as among key regulators expected to present perspectives on financing and regulatory reforms.
Babalola said the summit would examine practical strategies for improving access to affordable financing and strengthening indigenous participation in shipping industry.
He said deliberations would focus on regulatory bottlenecks, risk mitigation and innovative funding models for sustainable growth of indigenous shipping.
