Pastor Collapses, Dies While Preaching on Mortality at Burial in Rivers
By Adewale Owoade
A burial ceremony in Aleto, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, reportedly turned tragic on Friday when a Resident Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Deacon Steve Eyo, collapsed and died while delivering a sermon on the certainty of death.
Eyo was reportedly preaching at the funeral when he suddenly became unwell and collapsed, leaving mourners, church members and other residents at the ceremony in shock.
The incident was particularly poignant because the pastor was said to have been speaking about human mortality and the unpredictability of death shortly before his collapse.
According to reports published by multiple news platforms on October 3, Eyo was the Resident Pastor of RCCG Aleto and had attended the burial ceremony to minister to mourners.
In his message, he reportedly urged those present to recognise the uncertainty of life, live responsibly and prepare for death, reminding them that no one knows when their time would come.
His sudden death during the sermon turned the message into a deeply personal moment for those who witnessed the incident.
Eyo reportedly told the congregation:
“Number your days and prepare, for it can happen anytime.”
The circumstances surrounding his death have since left mourners reflecting on the message and the fragility of human life.
The burial ceremony, which began as an occasion to mourn one deceased person, was thus overshadowed by the unexpected death of the preacher himself.
For those present, the incident served as a sobering reminder of the uncertainty of life and the inevitability of death — themes that had formed the central message of Eyo’s sermon moments before his collapse.
