The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has described the decision by the federal government to avail Nigerian students with free daily access to approved educational platforms and digital content for senior secondary schools and tertiary institutions as another laudable initiative to democratize access to contemporary education.
In a statement signed by its Chairman Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary Segun Ogedengbe, the group described it as part of a broader transformation of the education sector under Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative.
It said: “We acknowledge that the initiative would put learning within the reach of Nigerian children who may ordinarily not be able to afford the data needed to for their access to learning and education generally.
“Furthermore, the success of the digital transformation would also help to improve the quality of education.
“It is also noted that a tablet, mobile phone or computer could serve as a classroom, library and gateway to opportunity in a situation when the cost of connectivity is no longer a barrier. Essentially this is the objective the initiative seeks to achieve.
“In this age of information technology, the provision of zero-rated digital access for students in secondary and tertiary institution is the right step in the right direction as it Is one of the major challenges being faced by students.”
It said the initiative will relieve students of the burden of accessing approved learning and education sites due to their inability to buy needed data.
