Osun State is set to celebrate its rich cultural heritage as no fewer than 500 drummers and non-drummers converge in Ede for a unique tourism and cultural event aimed at promoting peace ahead of the state’s governorship election.
The event, “Drum for Peace,” is being organised by Prince Adewale Laoye of Aafin Ilu (Palace of Drums) and will hold on July 26, 2026, at the Ede City Hall. With the theme, “Promoting Peace through Drums, Not Guns/Bombs,” the initiative seeks to demonstrate how Nigeria’s cultural heritage can serve as a powerful tool for peacebuilding, social cohesion and tourism development.
The cultural gathering is expected to attract traditional rulers, community leaders, youths, visitors, cultural enthusiasts and tourists from within and outside Osun State, providing an opportunity to experience the state’s vibrant drumming traditions and indigenous performing arts.
Participants will be treated to performances by master drummers, singers, poets, traditional chanters and other creative artists, all using music and cultural expressions to advocate unity, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
In addition to the cultural displays, security agencies, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), community leaders and other stakeholders will deliver goodwill messages highlighting the importance of peaceful electoral participation and national unity.
Prince Adewale Laoye said the initiative reflects the growing role of cultural tourism in preserving Nigeria’s heritage while fostering dialogue and peaceful coexistence among diverse communities.
According to him, drumming has long been an integral part of Yoruba culture, serving as a medium of communication, celebration and conflict resolution. He noted that the event seeks to project Osun State as a destination where culture not only entertains but also promotes peace, strengthens community bonds and contributes to sustainable tourism.
He called on government agencies, tourism stakeholders, cultural organisations, corporate bodies and peace advocates to support the initiative, describing it as an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural assets while reinforcing the message that peace remains the foundation for sustainable tourism and economic development.
