A cleric, Ven. Godwin Aneke, on Friday tasked Christians on standing for the truth and shunning all forms of materialism that tend to bend the truth and uprightness.

Aneke, a cleric serving under the Anglican Diocese of Udi, gave the admonition on Friday in an homily at a burial service of late Pa Aaron Mbonu, in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Nachi in Udi Local Government Area.

Pa Mbonu,108, who is a popular community leader in Nachi community, died after a brief illness on Feb. 20, 2024.

The cleric, who titled his homily as “The Fear of Man”, urged Christian faithful to emulate the exemplary qualities of Pa Mbonu in speaking and standing with the truth.

He noted that presently many people had chosen to fear man due to material gains or fear of their lives; while denying truth when it matters most.

“Pa Mbonu followed strictly his belief and was very truthful, sociable and willing always to play host to his guest with his specially made kolanut paste and tapped palm wine,’ he said.

He advised his children and relatives to sustain his truthful nature and shun materialism.

According to him, the Holy Bible says – Do not fear them which kill the body but are not able to kill the soul, rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell -.

Speaking, Ven. Sunday Okoli, Vicar in-charge of St Andrew’s Anglican Church, Nachi, described Pa Mbonu as a devoted Christian.

Responding, Rev. Linus Mbonu, the son of the deceased, said his father embraced Christ fully and was in active service in the church.

Mbonu said their greatest joy was that this deceased father turned fully to God before his death.
