  • Supreme Court dismisses suit against Gov. Ihedioha

the Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a suit filed by Sen. Samuel Anyanwu challenging the emergence of  Gov. Emeka Ihedioha as the Imo governor.

Justice Jonn Okoro, in a lead judgment, held that the appellant failed to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt.

“The appellant has failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt the allegations made against the 1st respondent, therefore the case is hereby dismissed and cost of N200,000 awarded in favour of the first and second respondents.

Anyanwu had approached the Court seeking to nullify the victory of Ihedioha.

He urged the courts to declare him the authentic winner of the primary election.

He accused Ihedioha of engaging in over-voting, thuggery, which he alleged, swayed the polls in favour of Ihedioha who is now the governor of the state.

Ihedioha had in the primary election on October 1, 2018, got 1,723 votes to defeat Anayanwu who got 1,282 to come second.

The court of Appeal in Owerri, Imo State had struck out the suit challenging the emergence of the Imo state governor, Emeka Ihedioha, as the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate in the state.

The suit which had earlier been stuck out by the Owerri Federal High Court was filled by senator Samuel Anyanwu, who contested the primary election with Ihedioha.

In dismissing that suit, the jurist held that Anyanwu was unable to establish his allegations saying that the petitioner did not bring enough evidence to convince the court.

Mr Rotimi Amaechi, former Governor of Rivers and immediate past Minister of Transportation on Saturday says poverty alleviation at all levels of government is panacea to lingering insecurity in the country.

Amaechi who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja stressed that only viable and productive economy that creates jobs will surmount the spate of insecurity in the country.

He commended the APC-led federal government for devising templates aimed at revamping the economy.

“This government knows the problems of the country which they inherited.

“That is why President Muhammadu Buhari declares war against poverty as a means to ending insecurity,’’ he said.

Amaechi, who made the President’s new ministerial nominee list, restated the need to revitalize the economy for sustainable development at all levels.

He identified youth empowerment as vital in wealth creation for a stable and secured polity.

The University of Lagos has fixed Aug. 1 to Aug. 21 for its Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) screening into all courses/programmes for the 2019/2020 academic year.

This is contained in a statement issued by the school Registrar, Mr Oladejo Azeez, in Lagos, on Saturday.

The Registrar said only candidates who made the institution their first choice in the 2019 UTME and scored 200 and above are eligible for the screening upon payment of screening fee of N2, 000.

“Candidates who will not be 16 years of age by Oct. 31 are not eligible and need not apply.

“In the same vein, candidates who do not participate in the UTME screening will not be considered for placement’’ he said.

Specifically, Azeez said that the post- UTME aptitude test would hold from Monday, Aug. 26 to Friday, Aug. 30.

He said that candidates must possess five credits passes at one sitting in relevant O’ Level subjects including English Language and Mathematics.

The Registrar noted that former students of the institution whose admissions were withdrawn on the basis of poor academic performance or absence status could reapply.

  • Over 100 migrants missing off Libyan coast – IOM

More than 100 migrants were missing after their boat sank off the coast of Libya in what might be the worst tragedy in the Mediterranean this year, aid agencies said Thursday.

“The sinking took place off the coast of the city of Khoms,” some 100 kilometres (60 miles) from Tripoli, said Safa Msehli, spokesperson for the International Organisation of Migration in Libya.

About 145 migrants were rescued by the Libyan coastguard, and survivors had reported that about 150 people remained missing, she said.

General Ayoub Kacem, a spokesman for the Libyan navy, said that “134 migrants were rescued and a body recovered, while 115 other migrants are still missing”.

“A wooden boat carrying around 250 people, including women and children, sank some five nautical miles from the coast, according to witness testimony from the migrants who survived,” Kacem said in a statement.

The charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said as many as 250 migrants were still missing.

The migrants had been apparently headed out to sea on three boats lashed together, MSF mission chief Julien Raickman told AFP by telephone.

He said survivors had reported a total of almost 400 people on board.

Kacem said most of the rescued migrants were from Ethiopia while others were Palestinians and Sudanese. The coastguard was waiting for authorities to provide accommodation for them.

The head of the UN refugee agency Filippo Grandi tweeted that it was “the worst Mediterranean tragedy of this year”.

“Restoring rescue at sea, ending refugee + migrant detention in Libya, increasing safe pathways out of Libya must happen NOW, before it is too late for many more desperate people,” he added.

The capsize came only a few weeks after some 68 migrants died when an Italy-bound boat sank off Tunisia.

That vessel, filled with mostly African migrants, tipped over shortly after setting out from the Libyan town of Zuwara, west of Tripoli, with the aim of reaching Italy.

Libya, which has been wracked by chaos since the 2011 uprising that killed president Moamer Kadhafi, has long been a major transit route for migrants, especially from sub-Saharan Africa, desperate to reach Europe.

Humanitarian group SOS Mediterranee said Sunday it had relaunched rescue efforts off Libya seven months after abandoning operations as European ports refused to accept the migrants.

The Norwegian-flagged Ocean Viking will “conduct search and rescue activities in the central Mediterranean” for SOS Mediterranee and MSF, the group said in a statement.

It said the exodus from Libya was “one of the most perilous sea crossings in the world”.

After nearly three years of operations in which it rescued some 30 000 migrants, the Aquarius had been forced to cease operations because of what the group said was obstruction by some European countries.

Italy’s populist-dominated government has become particularly hardline against accepting undocumented migrants on its territory.

Xenophobia: FG ought to demand justice – Expert

    By Lizzy Okoji

The Association of Foreign Relations Professionals of Nigeria (AFRPN) has urged the Federal Government to demand justice for the killing of its citizens living abroad in line with the country’s foreign policy.

President of AFRPN, Amb. Gani Lawal, gave the advice on Thursday in Abuja during a pre-event briefing on the Second Annual Lecture of the association scheduled to hold on July 31 in Abuja.

Lawal said that one of the objectives of Nigeria’s foreign policy was for the government to ensure the protection of Nigerians living in other countries and to demand for justice in the case of death or harm.

According to Lawal, the Foreign Policy of any nation should be in line with maintaining international peace and security.

“If you look at the foreign policy objectives of Nigeria, one of it is to protect the lives of Nigerians all over the world.

“Our foreign policy is woven around the protection of Nigerians, but where there are individual cases, we would have to look at individual cases and find out what is responsible for it and deal with it squarely.

“Such instances as the killing of Nigerians in South Africa and other countries as a result of some area boys going around because of jealousy of Nigerians doing well.

“In terms of government response, it is to ensure that culprits are brought to book and dealt with decisively in order to serve as deterrence to would be attackers.

“That is what Foreign Policy can do – to demand from the governments of those countries where Nigerians are being killed and ask for restitution for the families of those killed.

“There have been occasions where we did that through our foreign policy, asking that those people, who are involved must be dealt with and there must be a way of pacifying the families concerned,” Lawal said.

Lawal said that frank discussions on Nigeria’s Foreign Policy making would feature in the course of the workshop to come up with the way forward going by the caliber of the guest lecturer and participants.

He said that in its first year of operation, the AFRPN launched its first peer review journal and this year, the workshop would also be brainstorming on Foreign Policy which is a direct outgrowth of domestic policy.

He added that the objectives of the association was to impact in a professional way  the foreign policy formulation and implementation of Nigeria to further enhance and make Nigeria a respected voice in the international arena.

Also speaking, Amb. Ridhwan Mustapha, a former Nigerian Ambassador to Pakistan, said it was the duty of the Federal Government to guarantee the protection of every Nigerian wherever they might be.

Mustapha also said that wherever any incident happened involving any Nigerian, it behooved on the government and Nigerians in that country to handle the matter.

He added that the government had always cared for the safety of the lives of Nigerians wherever they might be.

“Nobody is happy about what is happening in the South Africa we’re talking about; nobody is happy.

“Nigerians are not happy; the government is not happy because it is unfair.

“Nigeria has done a lot for South Africa,” Mustapha said.

According to him, it is the responsibility of every government to protect its citizens.

He said that the forthcoming workshop would create a platform to further reflect on Nigeria’s Foreign Policies, “what has been, what it is, and what is likely to be”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2019 workshop with the theme `Theory and Reality in Nigeria’s Foreign Policy Making: Some further reflections’, will be Chaired by Amb. Babagana Kingibe with former ministers of foreign affairs in attendance.

  • Why Malami deserves to be confirmed – CSO

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria and Attorney General, Abubakar Malami

A Civil Society Organisation (CSO), Guardians of Democracy and Development (GODD), has urged the Senate to confirm the ministerial nomination of former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami to take President Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption to the next level.

Recall that a group had on Wednesday called on the Senate to reject the nomination of Malami at the ongoing ministerial screening.

But GODD in a statement signed by it national convener, Solomon Adodo said such calls were unpatriotic.

He urged the Senate to discountenance the call against Malami’s confirmation noting that Nigerians would resist any sinister move to jeopardize the ongoing fight against corruption.

“We are compelled to issue this statement following calls on the Nigerian Senate to reject the ministerial nomination of former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

“It is a known fact that since the inception of the administration of President Muhammad Buhari, some individuals and groups that believe Nigeria is their private estate have vowed to frustrate every move of this government.

“That the administration insists on due process and putting a stop to corruption is something these persons are not willing to give up on. Consequently, they employ all manner of tactics to derail the administration.

“Their fiendish strategies range from sponsoring malicious media campaigns to malign the administration and its appointees to twisting facts to sway public opinion to their favour.

“We must not forget that Abubakar Malami SAN was in the forefront of the administration’s fight against corruption and this sure bloodied many a toe,” the statement quoted Adodo as saying.

GODD, while appealing to Nigerians to support the confirmation of Malami, emphasised that the President had the prerogative to appoint those he feels would help him deliver the goods of democracy.

The group therefore called on the Senate to do the needful and weigh the positive merits in the nomination of Abubakar Malami (SAN).

Amnesty and the power of the new WordPress editor

In the short video below, you’ll see a quick overview of what it’s like to build new sites quickly and publish and manage content in Amnesty’s new platform launching in September.

See how Big Bite’s custom blocks streamline publishing for Amnesty International.

Agency partner Big Bite has built an entirely new site platform for Nobel Peace Prize Winner Amnesty International, with the new WordPress editor as its foundation, via the Gutenberg plugin. They focused on developing custom blocks and a core theme that serves as the heart of Amnesty’s digital efforts moving forward. More than a new site, this is a framework for applying consistent brand identity, design, and user experience standards to many new sites and for allowing creators to spin up new, powerful sites quickly and with ease. And as a part of Big Bite’s and Amnesty’s shared commitment to giving back to the community, large parts of the project will be released as open source components for anyone to use.

It's like we read your mind. We developed the Gutenberg Ramp plugin for just this reason. On your VIP Go sites, you can now load Gutenberg everywhere, or selectively by post ID (load only for specific posts) and post type (load only for specific post types). Find complete instructions at this helpful page.

We recommend that you load it up in a VIP Go development environment first. If you don’t have a development environment on which to test, now’s a great time to get one set up. Just open up a ticket with our Support team and we can get a development site set up for you. Unless otherwise requested, we’ll sync the content from your live site so you can get a true sense of how Gutenberg will work for you. If you already have a development environment and would prefer not to disturb that, we can create an additional Gutenberg testing environment instead. Not to worry, in either case content changes here will not affect the content on your live site.
