  • Gov. Ugwuanyi expresses optimism over effectiveness of aerial surveillance to tackle insecurity

    Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state, on Saturday expressed optimism over the effectiveness of aerial surveillance to tackle all forms of insecurity and crimes within Enugu State.

     

    It would be recalled that a joint aerial surveillance patrol of forest areas and people returning unauthorized arms was a decision reached at an emergency meeting of the Enugu State joint security held in Enugu on Friday.

     

    Ugwuanyi said this after presenting prizes to outstanding officers of Nigerian Air Force (NAF) during NAF annual 10 kilometres walk/jog exercise in Enugu.

     

    The governor, who participated in the exercise, lauded the NAF Ground Training Command (GTC), Enugu, for their exceptional performance in their internal security duties, which had helped to make the state one of the safest in the country.

     

    According to him, the Chief of Air Staff, Marshal Abubakar Sadique, must be commended for the tremendous role NAF is playing in reducing insurgency in the country as well as their professional internal security duties.

     

    “I sincerely believe that the aerial surveillance adopted by security agencies in the state, to complement the existing security measures, will definitely check any existing or emerging security threat in the state.

     

    “The existing cooperation between various security agencies in the state is quite commendable.

     

    “The state government will continue to support the Nigerian Air Force in its endeavours to improve security in the country and most especially within Enugu State,’’ he said.

     

    On the exercise, Ugwuanyi lauded NAF for conducting a hitch-free event, adding “I encourage all Nigerians to take regular exercise serious for their health and wellbeing.

     

    “Medical experts have continued to advise that regular exercise keeps one fit, agile, healthy and reduces need for medical attention,’’ he said.

     

    Air Commodore Anthony Ndace, Commander 553 NAF Base Services Group, said that the exercise was aimed at testing the physical fitness and combat readiness of NAF personnel.

     

    Ndace called on NAF personnel to create time to engage in sporting activities in order to enhance their fitness and agility at all time.

     

    “NAF is thanking Gov. Ugwuanyi for his laudable strive to ensure peace and security in the state; even as we will continue to provide our needed support to the civil authorities.

     

    “NAF thanks everybody that has participated and made the event a huge success,’’ he said.

     

    The overall best in the exercise, Flying Officer Ahmed Sambo, said that he would not relent to continue in his daily exercise to ensure that he was ready for duty and deployment anytime.

     

    “I must thank NAF for the prize given to me and I will continue to keep fit and make sure that I perform optimal in my assignments,’’ Sambo, who came overall first, said. (NAN)

  • One of the victims of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi bridge collapse has been identified as Salamat.

    Salamat, a 200 level student studying Chemistry Education, was killed alongside four others when a pedestrian bridge at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Gubi Campus, collapsed last night during a heavy downpour.

     

    Salamat and other students were on their way back to the hostel when the bridge linking the lecture rooms to the hostel collapsed, killing 5 and causing others to suffer various degrees of injuries.

     

    Salamat’s sister had gone on Twitter to ask for help in locating her sister after the bridge collapsed.

  • Miyetti Allah Reacts As Gunmen Kill Its Leader

    The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has reacted to the killing of Saidu Kolaku, the zonal vice-chairman of the body.

     

    DAILY POST reported that Kolaku was shot dead on Saturday after unknown gunmen stormed the resident of the Fulani leader located at Sabon Pegi in Mayo Belwa Local Government, Adamawa State.

     

    His death was confirmed by the police spokesman in the Adamawa State, Sulaiman Nguroje in a statement.

     

    The statement read: “Unknown gunmen stormed the resident of the Fulani leader located at Sabon Pegi in Mayo Belwa local government, shot him and left him in the pool of his blood. ”

     

    But reacting, the Public Relations Officer of Miyetti Allah in the State, Muhammad Buba expressed sadness over the death of Kolaku.

     

    Buba in a statement on Sunday described the killing of Kolaku as a possible reprisal attack to avenge the role he played in tackling criminality especially kidnapping and cattle rustling in the State.

     

    Buba added that the deceased’s fight against criminal practices in the state earned him an honorary award from the Nigeria police.

     

    The terse statement reads: ‘’Efforts of Kolaku in fighting crime had made the police command to honour him on 17th July 2019, for his gallantry and valiant exploits in fighting kidnappers and cattle rustlers rampaging the state.

  • 2019 National Council On Fire Conference Declared open by Governor Abudurlahman Abdulrazaq

    The National Council On Fire Conference holding in Ilorin, Kwara State was declared open on Monday by the Governor of Kwara State, His Excellency, Abudulrahman Abdulrazaq.The Governor who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Kwara State Ministry of Works and Transport, Dr. Yusuf Garba Manjo thanked the National Council on Fire for choosing Kwara as the venue of the  10th edition of the National Council on Fire Conference. The Governor stressed that the Conference will help in strengthening effective service delivery in the Fire sector.He used the opportunity to appeal to citizens and relevant stakeholders to cooperate with the Nigerian Fire Service to ensure enhancement of better service delivery and viable safety network in order to reduce the loss of lives and property.Governor Abdulrazaq acknowledged the fact that fire has destroyed properties worth billions. ” in recent years, fire has destroyed both government and private properties and other socio- economic activities in different parts of the country. Kwara State is not exempted from this sad and ugly occurrences” the Governor said. He then called on Fire Services at all levels to embark on more publicity in order to create fire safety awareness.
    The Controller General, Federal Fire Service, Liman Ibrahim MIFireE while delivering his welcome address said the importance of the Fire Conference can not be overemphasized. In his word ” The impact of the National Council on Fire Conference as a priceless asset in the fight to curb the spate of uncontrolled fires in our nation cannot be overemphasized”. The CG said “the theme of this year’s conference “TECHNOLOGY: AN IMPERATIVE FOR ENHANCED SERVICE DELIVERY IN THE FIRE SECTOR” is affirmative of the the key role technology plays in our lives. Their is no sphere of human existence, not been touched by technology, both positively and otherwise. Technology remains the most visible indices of global change in human advancement. Through out the ages, technology has continued to evidence the bid of the human race to have dominion over the earth and even beyond the earth”.  He went further to acknowledge that the ever evolving and increasing threats to lives, property and the environment continues to expand the load and strain the capacity to respond effectively,  hence the importance of the employment of technology to enhance  the level of preparedness for effective fire fighting. 
    The Controller General emphasized that the role of the Fire Service is beyond firefighting ” Our daily schedule is no longer restricted to fire in building alone; it now includes responding to incident of collapsed building, both occupied and under construction. Flood disaster and other natural and man made disaster have also taken centre stage in our sphere of influence as fire and rescue service providers.”
    He also used the opportunity to appeal to Kwara State Government to intervene in the challenges faced by Kwara State Fire Service who he said are in dire straits. The CG called on the Governor to take a clue  from the transformation the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has brought to the Federal Fire Service, while urging all Fire Services to intensify efforts in keeping the nation free from uncontrolled fires and other unsafe acts by embracing technology  as a means of modern firefighting.

  • Charlyboy returns to music, collaborates with Falz

    Foremost Nigerian showbiz maestro and activist, Charles Oputa, a.k.a Charlyboy, is set to release a hit single featuring ace singer and rapper Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz.

    The 68-year-old grand-father, who released his debut high-life album over three decades ago, hinted on the ‘collabo’ in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

    The “Nwata Miss” crooner said he has decided to work with Falz because of his philosophical style of music that addresses leadership issues and societal ills.

    He added that the project was an advocacy song targeted at driving positive narratives in the society.

    “Falz is a young man that I so much believe in his music and passion towards positive change in all aspects of our society, and we share similar thoughts.

    “We are working on something together and it will sure stir positive change in our lives as Nigerians.”

    The former president of Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) said   that he decided to use music as a tool to inspire ordinary Nigerians, especially youths, towards holding leaders accountable.

    He explained that he was leading   an advocacy and enlightenment campaign ‘Na we be Government” and decided to go back to music, his age-long passion, to call citizens to participate in nation building.

    “All over the word, the Arts, especially music, have been used to inspire people and change narratives towards a better society.

    “I did not go into music for money, but for the passion for it, and this time I am using it to awake the consciousness of all Nigerians towards building the country they desire.

    “A lot of Nigerians have given up on their country because of bad leadership over the years, and do not believe they have a say in the affairs of their country

    “It is time they are reminded that power truly belongs to them and there is a social contract between them and elected political leaders.

    “Citizens will do their part and political leaders should also fulfill their obligations as promised in their manifesto, and as required by the constitution,” he said.
