China Chamber of Commerce refutes media reports of alleged discrimination at Chinese supermarket.

    By Flowerbud News

The China General Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria has reacted to a viral video alleging that a Chinese supermarket within the premises of the Royal Choice Estate, Airport Road, Abuja, denied access to Nigerians seeking to purchase groceries.

Recall that a viral video posted by some online media outlet had alleged that a Nigerian who tried to gain access to the premises was denied because Nigerians are not allowed to shop in the supermarket only Chinese.

In an official statement on Monday, the Chamber clarified that the Royal Choice Estate is not a supermarket as widely reported, but rather comprises an office complex and residential apartments.

“The China Chamber of Commerce is one of several enterprises using the facility, and the supermarket in question is located in the residential area of the estate, which is unrelated to the China Chamber of Commerce in Nigeria,” the statement said.

According to the statement, the residential area of the estate consists of privately occupied residents who adhere to security protocols in granting access to external visitors. The statement also stated that no individual was subjected to discrimination or denied access to the estate or supermarket to purchase groceries as widely believed.

Furthermore, the statement expressed regret over the altercation at the estate’s entrance gate between the security personnel and a customer, emphasizing that it does not reflect the official position of the estate management or the chamber of commerce.

The China General Chamber of Commerce emphasized its commitment to equality and inclusiveness and welcomed first-hand visits to witness the truth.

“Our principles are to enhance friendship between the people of both countries and promote economic development,” the statement added.

CSOs, others chide Bago for throwing money to public

    By Mohammed Baba

CSOs, opposition political parties, clerics and citizens have condemned the attitude of Gov. Umar Bago of Niger for taking advantage of the poverty and economic hardship to dehumanize the electorate by throwing public money to be scrambled for by the people.

The North-Central Zonal Chairman, Campaign for Democracy, Human Right
Advocacy Civil Society of Nigeria, Dr Mohammed Abdullahi-Jabi spoke to newsmen on the issue in Minna.

He averred that the governor is ignorant of the consequences of his actions despite the immunity he currently enjoys, adding that his action is most unfortunate.

Abdullahi-Jabi said, “The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is against such act of displaying or mutilation of the naira notes.

”This as contained in the constitution is contrary to the provision of the CBN Act of 2007, which contravened the financial regulations of Nigerian constitution in totality.”

He stated that the governor is showcasing them or breeding potential beggers who are being dehumanized by bringing them to public shame and making mockery of the bad situation of the masses.

He stressed that there is need for him to show maturity like his other colleagues in order to learn the rudiments of governance and decorum

Abdullahi-Jabi urged the governor to desist from what he described as the current over zealousness that is negatively affecting his image and that of the state

In another development, the Niger North Zonal Chairman of PDP, Yahaya Ability has also condemned the governor’s action of throwing money in the public.

He noted that his Special Adviser on Security and that of Political Affairs are not performing their required responsibility.

Ability condemned the governor’s unrepentant action of degrading the masses because he has access to the public funds at the detriment of the citizens.

He, therefore, advised him to change the negative narrative to enhance good image of his position and the entire state.

Ability stated that this is not the only way to make himself popular as a sitting governor of Niger State, saying,”he should treat people with dignity, accord them respect and have a listening ears as nobody is above the law.”

He advised the Governor to desist from exhibiting what will undermine the right of the citizenry by empowering the people in the state in the right way.

    Similarly, the former Commissioner of
Information and Strategy, who is the Tambarin Kagara, Alhaji Umar Danladi Abdulhamid gas berated Governor Bago saying that he has violated the country’s constitution.

Abdulhamid advocated better ways of sharing public funds in a more matured and organized ways

He however commended good gesture of any kind to the citizens especially the poorest of the poor who are disadvantaged,.

Speaking at the backdrop of the video on social media showing the Governor throwing money to Kagara people where many were injured in the process, when he went for Sallah homage, he urged the people to desist from endangering their lives because of stipends sprayed around.

It was reliably gathered that no fewer than four people had fractures while scores sustained various degrees of injuries following the scramble when the Governor threw cash on them while driving round the the town.

Our Reporter gathered that the practice has been his attitude since he was sworn in May 29, 2023, in which the Kagara episode is one among many which has also been kicked against by many Islamic clerics during their Friday sermons and preachings in the state.

Many are worried that while juicy contracts are allegedly commandeered by the Governor’s cronies outside the state peanuts are thrown on poverty-ridden Nigerlites causing nuisance and havoc on the streets and highways while on transit.

They therefore advised Governor Mohammed Umar Bago to find a more decent, matured and legal ways of empowering the people through their unions and associations to ensure self reliance and sustainance that will accord them respect, honor, integrity and appreciated as they offer their services effectively and efficiently to humanity in the state.

  • Self Sufficiency in Food Production: Why Bago Is Ahead of His Time

Self Sufficiency in Food Production: Why Bago Is Ahead of His Time

    By Hamza Waziri

    April 1, 2024

On the 5th of February 2024, Nigerians, particularly, the leaders, woke up to the disturbing news of a protest against the high cost of living in the country which was first staged by women in Minna, the capital of Niger State, and later joined by the youth.

The protest did not come to visionary leaders like Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State as a surprise, because he had the premonition that such a thing would happen sooner or later if something was not urgently done to abate the biting economic hardship in the country.

However, what was hard for many economic experts and public commentators to digest was how a protest against the high cost of living in Nigeria would begin in Niger State, particularly in Minna which has been turned into a construction site and has created a lot of job opportunities for the citizenry. Moreover, the government of Farmer Bago has been able to revert payment of State civil servants salaries to 25th of every month promptly instead of the first week of the succeeding month which used to be the practice in the past, even as local government council staff are happy these days as the issue of payment of salaries on a percentage basis is being resolved.

Albeit, for Farmer Governor Bago, the protest is a blessing in disguise, as many are beginning to see the reason for making agriculture one of the topmost economic priorities of his government and why he had to take the name, “Farmer Governor” to correct the negative impression that some people hold about farmers as the poor or downtrodden in the society.

Farmer Governor Bago had envisioned that the state needed to overhaul its decaying infrastructure, however, for sustainable development, agriculture had to be placed at the top of the priority list of his government, not only to guarantee food security but to create job opportunities for the teeming youth and enormous wealth for the state government through the agricultural value chain.

Farmer Governor Bago after being sworn in as the governor of Niger State embarked on a journey to create “a new life for Niger” vigorously searching for development partners within and outside the country. He was not deterred by the side comments of the naysayers as he remained focused on what he wanted to accomplish. Lo and behold, ten months after, no less than five thousand pieces of agricultural equipment were assembled at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, Minna, the Airport which has been remodeled into a “Special Agro-Processing Zone” in the state and is projected to be the largest in Africa.
In the Airport Free Zone, 2,000 hectares of land have been cleared already for the cultivation of fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, and other dairy products for exportation.

Speaking to the press after inspection of the Airport in preparation for the state visit by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Minna, Farmer Governor disclosed that Niger State sells about half a million cattle weekly, noting that the agro-processing zone will allow easy exportation of frozen meats instead of live cattle and also create value-chain as well as employment.

He said the 2000 hectares will be expanded to 10,000 hectares of land for further agricultural activities in the Airport Free Zone.

Little wonder, the president and other guests at the commissioning of the Special Agro-Processing Free Trade Zone and farm equipment held on the 11th of March 2024 had no option but to pour encomium on Farmer Governor Bago for taking the bull by the horns.

President Tinubu said “We have seen the level of commitment here. We have seen leadership. The success of any leader will depend on the ability to do what needs to be done when it ought to be done. It is now time for us to address the challenges and make Nigeria an economy of opportunities. We must care for our people; and re-orient our people. I do not see why Nigeria cannot feed all students in its schools.

“I am equally here to partner with you to banish hunger. You are doing the job. And I must support you; it is mandatory as Nigerians. When we read newspapers, some of us are confused about whether to abuse the past or the present or to make excuses for the future. But that is not in my dictionary. I think action now, re-engineer the finances of our country and steer it on the right path”
Did you think the president’s statements were just mere rhetoric? If you think so you are wrong. The president was prompted to reveal his mind as he realized that part of the significance of the Minna Special Agro-Processing Free Zone, included, Connecting the Rural Agricultural Communities to Urban Development, the Processing, Production, Packaging & Distribution of Agricultural Commodities (Cassava, Banana, Flour, Rice, Pastries, Yogurt, Milk); Providing Readily Available Market for Farm Produce and Turning Agricultural Waste into Wealth as well as Increase Household Incomes & Foster Job Creation in Rural Communities for Youth and Women. There is also the factor of Poverty Reduction, Food Security, and Speedy Economic Growth.

President Tinubu was so impressed with what he saw on the ground and was quick to urge Bago to maintain the lead and continue to be the pace-setter for the country.

Other governors at the ceremony seized the opportunity to tell Nigerians about the efforts they were making in their various states to move from subsistence farming to mechanization as they all concluded that agriculture was the sure banker to our survival.

Experts believe Farmer Governor Bago is on the right track to the mechanization of farming as farmers are being given all the necessary support to boost their production while nonfarmers are encouraged to go into farming as all they need is land and the government is ready to provide farm tools and the profits could then be shared with the government and as for those who have no lands they can check in the agricultural value chain, that between production process to the finished product and see how they could participate.

Economic analysts have described Farmer Bago as a “Smart and Visionary leader” whom they suggest is building a free and financially independent Niger State for the future. They believe that if Nigerlites heed the Governor’s call for support, his plan to draw 140km length of water irrigation to the Special Agro-processing Free Zone from Shiroro dam, and provide substantial power to the airport city project which he hopes will attract a lot of investment into the state, to make Niger State an Agricultural hub of the Nation, can be achieved.

As a last word, Farmer Governor Bago’s agricultural revolution is coming to fruition. Niger State is working towards feeding itself and the nation, therefore, all hands must be on deck as the state has begun a remarkable process of year-round farming, and the best time to key into the policy is now.

  • Understanding China’s Global Community with Shared Future for Mankind Concept

Understanding China’s Global Community with Shared Future for Mankind Concept

    By Lawal Sale

By most accounts, the tragic consequences of division, conflicts and confrontation have never been very lucid to the people of the world.

In recent times, the world has been enmeshed with conflicts and turbulence such as the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the Palestine/Israeli conflict and the Red Sea confrontations, among others, which, unfortunately, have shown no sign of abating.

As President Xi Jinping of China once stated: “United or divided, peace or conflict, cooperation or confrontation; are all questions of our time.” The Chinese leader then emphasized that “people’s wishes for a happy life is our goal; peace, development and win-win cooperation are unstoppable trends of our times”.

To be more specific, President Xi Jinping, some 10 years ago, propounded the idea of building a global community of shared future; answering a question thrown up by the world, by history, and by the times: “Where is humanity headed?”

Xi’s proposal is somewhat trailblazing, as the world continues to search for practical solutions and it represents China’s contribution to global efforts to protect our shared home and create a better future of prosperity for all.

The Chinese president, in Moscow, Russia, in 2013, first spoke of the vision of a global community of shared future while addressing the Moscow Institute of International Affairs (MGIMO in Russian).

For over a decade, the proposition has been steadily enriched and streamlined into a five-point proposal. The five points include building a partnership in which countries treat each other as equals, engaging in extensive consultation and enhancing mutual understanding.

Besides, President Xi proposed five goals for the world. The goals are building a world of lasting peace via dialogue and consultation; building a world of common security for all through joint efforts and building a world of common prosperity by means of win-win cooperation.

Others include the evolution of an open and inclusive world through exchanges and mutual learning and the development of a clean and beautiful world by engaging in green and low-carbon development projects.

The Chinese leader, nonetheless, underscored the need to restore China’s greatness and re-examine the concept of socialism. To him, socialism must integrate and adapt to the characteristics of contemporary Chinese society, which is the ultimate dream of every Chinese citizen.

President Xi Jinping apparently belongs to a school of thought which foregrounds certain ideals such as the development of “a community with a shared future for mankind”.

The Chinese leader’s standpoint, which is widely supported and re-echoed by several global affairs experts, is by all means pragmatic, particularly in the current 21st Century civilization where hegemony, egoism, imperialism, supremacy, injustice, conflict and confrontations are increasingly becoming endemic characteristics.

Perceptive observers believe that Xi Jinping’s proposal for “a community with a shared future for mankind” offers innovative strategies for curbing these problems. This is because the well-thought-out concept refers to what the destiny of each person and/or country has in common with another person, mankind. It, therefore, behoves people of the world to work together to solve the myriad of problems confronting their common destiny.

Global affairs experts emphasize that President Xi Jinping’s concept of “a community with a shared future for mankind” will evolve into a truly pragmatic foreign policy approach. For instance, the China-Africa cooperation is one of the examples of building a community of shared future for win-win cooperation among countries.

It is also worthy to note that the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind is obviously mutually beneficial and a win-win cooperation. In a nutshell, President Xi believes that the community of a shared future for mankind is both a constructive world outlook and an invitation to participate in the “Belt and Road Initiative” (BRI) joint projects.

The BRI is an initiative for economic cooperation, not for geopolitical or military alliance. It is an open and inclusive process that neither targets nor excludes any party. Rather than forming exclusionary cliques or a “China club”, it fundamentally aims at helping China and the rest of the world to seize opportunities and pursue common development priorities.

It is a broad alliance that can be joined by all interested countries to work together for shared benefits. It is evident that the BRI has facilitated the modernization drive of developing countries, leading the world into a new era of transcontinental cooperation.

This viewpoint is shared by global affairs experts who maintain that the global community of shared future for mankind and win-win cooperation has politically, economically and socially restored the democratisation of international relations, which have widely negotiated global governance, regardless of the size and wealth of any nation. Both strong and weak countries are equal in the mutually beneficial and win-win cooperation, considering its multilateralism feature.

In its continued commitment to building a community with a shared future for mankind, China has always been sharing weal and woe with developing countries and the Asian country has consistently remained a strong, dependable force in efforts to attain stability in a world that is obviously turbulent.

  • X-RAYING CHINA’S FOREIGN POLICY AT HER ‘2024 TWO-SESSIONS’

    X-RAYING CHINA’S FOREIGN POLICY AT HER ‘2024 TWO-SESSIONS’

    By – Lawal Sale

The Two Sessions (Lianghui) of China’s 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) and the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference began in Beijing on March 6 at the Great Hall of the People. It is expected to last for a week.

President Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders attended the opening of the meeting along with Premier Li Qiang, who delivered a Government Work Report at the meeting.

As has been the tradition in such meetings, reports will be reviewed from the State Council on the implementation of the 2023 Plan for National Economic and Social Development as well as the 2024 draft Plan for National Economic and Social Development.
The lawmakers will also review report from the State Council on the execution of the central and local budgets for 2023, as well as the draft for the central and local budgets for 2024.
Among the key takeaways at this year’s legislative meeting at the 2nd session of the 14th NPC will be: GDP growth of 5%, creation of 12 million new urban jobs, CPI increase of around 3%, grain harvest of about 650 million metric tonnes and a cut of around 2.5% in energy intensity.

Amongst other activities on the sideline of the Two-Session 2024 Meeting so far has been the interactive session with the Press by the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.

At the Press briefing, Mr. Wang Yi shed light on the raging Gaza conflict and said categorically that the Palestinian people indeed deserved justice and that there was need for full implementation of the two-state solution to the crisis, as the only way to break the vicious cycle of Palestinian-Israeli conflicts. He reiterated that China supported Palestine’s full membership of the United Nations, while calling for a more broad-based, authoritative and effective international peace conference on the Gaza conflict.

Mr. Wang stressed that for world’s stability, an equal multi-polar world that translates to equal rights, opportunities and rules for every nation; is imperative, adding that “an orderly multi-polar world means that all should observe the purposes and principles of the U.N Charter.”
He expatiated on all three principles proposed by President Xi Jinping for a viable China-US relations, wherein “mutual respect is the pre-condition, peaceful co-existence is the baseline, and win-win cooperation is the goal”, adding that “if the U.S is obsessed with suppressing China, it will harm itself”.

On ‘certain powers’ that monopolize international efforts, Mr. Wang warned that countries should not be categorized according to their ‘strength’, stressing that ‘those with bigger fists’ should not have the final say on matters of global concerns. Such, he warned, is unacceptable as certain countries cannot be at the table while some others can only be on the menu.
Mr. Wang Yi further outlined the strategic importance of China-Russia relations, disclosing that the two historical allies and neighbours have forged a new paradigm of ‘Major-Country’ relations that differ entirely from the obsolete Cold War approach, non-alliance and non-confrontational, which all do not target any third party. He maintained that the growing relationship is a strategic choice by the two sides, which is wholly based on the fundamental interests of the two peoples.

On China-Africa relations, the Chinese Foreign Minister said that a new meeting of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) will be held in Autumn where Chinese and African leaders will discuss future developments and cooperation and hold in-depth exchanges on governance experience.

He added that China will continue to stand firmly with the African brothers and support an Africa that is truly independent ‘in thinking and ideas’, assuring them that China will assist in building capacity for self-driven development and support for faster modernization of the continent.

Perceptive analysts note that currently, China maintains diplomatic ties with about 53 African countries – all on the basis of win-win cooperation for common development.

LATE WADA MAIDA: 74TH POSTHUMOUS BIRTHDAY

    By Lawal Sale

Alhaji, as I fondly called you, you’ll have clocked 74 years today being March 5, 2024, but because of your creator’s divine call, you left this world that is today becoming more and more uncertain so soon to receive the call in the evening of Monday August 16, 2020. Indeed, it is vanity upon vanity – Kullu nafsi za’ikatul mauti (all living things must taste death).

As believers, we accepted and mourned your peaceful departure, and since that day when you left us, we keep praying for your very gentle soul to remain in Aljannah Firdaus permanently by Allah’s grace. You were humane, a mentor to many, a provider of succour, and philanthropist to the core. In fact, the shades you provided to many people out of magnanimity and, for Allah’s sake, are still there.

Your name was and is still synonymous with the News Agency of Nigeria; this is because anywhere you go, Wada Maida is NAN, and NAN is Wada Maida. You were NAN Editor-in-Chief of the Africa’s largest news content provider for nine years, Managing Director for nine years, and its Chairman board of directors for three years. Perhaps that was why the almost 50-year Agency’s headquarters was renamed after your humble name. You deserved it!

You were shy, gentle, and a man of few words – I can attest to this, because I recall when you clocked 70 years on March 5, 2020, I called you while you were in Vienna, Austria participating in International Press Institute (lPI) meeting, and informed you that I had started writing a tribute on your 70th birthday, you outrightly rejected it…you told me, Lawal, there was no need for that, let it just come and pass. I obeyed and laid down my pen.

Alhaji, as you are peacefully resting in your permanent abode, know that the many good deeds you’ve done to humanity while you were alive are still being appreciated, we, the beneficiaries will continue to pray to Allah SWT to reward you immensely and rest your gentle soul permanently in Aljannah Firdaus. Ameen!
