Osun LG Crisis: NULGE faction demands workers resumption

A faction of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Osun State has called on the local government workers to resume work in the interest of the general public and local government workers.

The faction described the protracted withdrawal of services by workers as the height of irresponsibility and sheer wickedness, noting that grounding local government services subjects members of the public to unnecessary hardship with denial of basic government services.

The local government workers under the auspices of the Association of Concerned Local Government Staff in Osun State, said the local government employees cannot continue to be denied their monetary and career privileges over needless withdrawal of services.

State Coordinator of the faction, Adedayo Adekunle and Secretary, Akin Adepoju during a press conference held at the Correspondent Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Osogbo accused the Osun NULGE President, Dr Nathaniel Ogungbangbe of nepotism and flagrant disobedience to the constitution of NULGE, especially in respect to the withdrawal of services.

According to the NULGE leaders, “Our dear colleagues and patriots, a clarion call summons us today to review the ongoing events in our state.

“The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, Osun State has wrongly and selfishly pitched our union against the people of the state in total disregard to the core values and principles of NULGE.

It is unfortunate that the NULGE leadership has turned the union to their family affairs with total disregard to the leadership and structure of the union at all levels.

“You will all recall that Dr Nathaniel Ogungbangbe, the President of NULGE recently signed a letter to close down the local government secretariats. Despite the fact that the State Branch of the Union has a paid Secretary, Dr Nathaniel Ogungbangbe wrongly signed the circular personally to close down the local government secretariats, Maternity Centers, and Marriage Registries without holding any Congress of Local Government workers, just to please his selfish interest in the state.

Despite his claim that Local Governments are no longer safe for staff to work in, he opened the local governments for the purpose of conducting his second term election where he succeeded in manipulating himself to win a second term. No life was lost during the elections. No person was arrested and social parties were held during the day and nights to celebrate the success. Yet, all Maternity Centers were locked against women and children and they were and are still sentenced to death by the reckless shutdown of the Local Government Service in Osun State by this desperate politician in the garb of a unionist.

For over a month now, those who need marriage certificates, local government identification and other important documents have been denied unjustly. Local Government workers who are due for study release are watching helplessly and the local government cooperative loan deductions that usually serve as reliefs for members in time of need could not be assessed because of illegal withdrawal of services.

“Our oath, culture and philosophy are to serve all government legally in power. If it is APC today or PDP tomorrow, our business is public service delivery and not any political party in power.

“We therefore call on all local government workers to resume immediately. We assure to provide leadership by liaising with security agents to ensure the security of the lives and properties of all the workers.

Recall that NULGE and the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, had in February called on local government workers to stay off secretariats for security reasons.

The state governor, had, after swearing in the newly elected chairmen and councillors advised them not to report to the local government Secretariats to avoid an outbreak of violence.

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has also thrown its weight behind calls for local government workers to resume work in the interest of peace and tranquillity in the state

BREAKING: Over 30 Reportedly Shot In Osun Communal Clash

At least 30 individuals have been injured by gunfire in a recent outbreak of violence between the communities of Ifon in Orolu local government and Ilobu in Irepodun council area, both located in Osun State.

Reports indicate that the conflict, rooted in a lingering land disagreement, has forced numerous residents, particularly women and children, to flee their homes.

In the predawn hours of Friday, assailants torched multiple homes and businesses, escalating the destruction in the area.

Sources reveal that prior to this latest incident, tensions had already been simmering, with locals from both towns engaging in skirmishes across villages and contested territories.

Social media clips shared by a group identifying as the Concerned Youth of Ifon Osun, Orolu Kingdom, expressed their frustration: “We can’t keep looking and be watching Olobu & Ilobu people’s burning our shops and houses in the midnight any longer.

“We, the Youth of Ifon Osun Orolu Kingdom, call on the state Government of Osun to hasten their steps and actions to short things out , we have been patiently enduring the brutal attacks and destructive behavior of Ilobu hoodlums for far too long.

“Our peace-loving and law-abiding king, Oba Peter Oluwole Ipadeola Ilufemiloye Akinyooiye III, Olufon of Ifon Osun Orolu Kingdom, has been calming our youths and advising restraint, despite the ongoing aggression from Ilobu.

“However, it is becoming increasingly difficult for us to remain passive while our ancestral properties and farmlands are being destroyed and our people are being harmed.”

In contrast, Chief Leke Ogunsola, the Otun Jagun of Ilobu, refuted claims that his community initiated the violence.

He countered: “Since Tuesday, they have been attacking our people on their farmland like Agbere Onireke and Opapa. They attacked a chief with an attempt to kidnap him but he was rescued by farmers around.

On Wednesday, they went to a farm at Gbere to attack on Nureni and Oseni Saluwudeen, burnt down two motorcycles which will reported at the police station in Ilobu.

Yesterday, in the evening they went to a place called Oke-Ekutu, they destroyed all the houses and set one on fire. They went to Akipanroro, Ganga and Oke-Ayepe, they started burning and shooting our people. Mostly children and women were caught in this attack, they caught us unawares.

“Our children and women are displaced now, we are extracting bullets in the palace through local means, they have brought about 30 to palace for us to remove the bullets in their body, they are still bringing more. Adeleke University forcing Muslim students to attend church programmes’, MURIC writes NUC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused Adeleke University in Osun State of disrupting Ramadan activities and forcing Muslim students to attend church programmes.

Prof. Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director of MURIC, stated that Muslim students are compelled to attend church services on certain days and that practices of any faith other than Christianity are banned on campus.

He described these actions as signs of religious intolerance and urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to investigate the university’s policies, which he claims infringe on the religious rights of Muslim students.

Akintola highlighted that previous complaints about religious persecution at Adeleke University have gone unaddressed, and he called for greater transparency from private universities regarding their religious orientations. He emphasized the need for oversight to protect the rights of Muslim students in educational institutions.

The supererogatory prayer held in Ramadan evenings (tarawih) was reportedly disrupted two days ago and the students were warned never to try it again.

  • NAFDAC alerts public on falsified Oxycontin 80mg in Switzerland market

NAFDAC alerts public on falsified Oxycontin 80mg in Switzerland market

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted the public on falsified Oxycontin 80mg (oxycodone hydrochloride) which it says was detected in an unregulated market in Switzerland.

The public alert with No. 07/2025 was uploaded on the agency’s website on Thursday.

The agency said the issue about falsified medicine was reported to the World Health Organisation (WHO) by the genuine manufacturer, MUNDIPHARMA, in February.

It said the falsified product imitated the genuine OXYCONTIN 80mg authorised for sale in Poland, adding that the genuine OXYCONTIN (oxycodone hydrochloride) is a semi-synthetic opioid indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe pain.

It said laboratory tests of samples for the falsified product were conducted by the Drug Information Centre in Zurich, Switzerland, and that WHO, DIZ’s drug-checking service determined that the tablets did not contain oxycodone but a synthetic opioid likely to be a nitazene compound.

According to NAFDAC, Nitazene derivatives (e.g., metonitazene, isotonitazene, fluonitazene) are potent synthetic opioids, primarily used in research due to their high addiction potential and severe side effects.

It said these substances could be hundreds of times stronger than oxycodone, posing a high overdose risk, stressing that limited information is available on their risks, toxicity, side effects, and long-term consequences.

“The identified product in this alert is confirmed as falsified on the basis that it deliberately/fraudulently misrepresented its identity, composition, or source.

“The falsified product imitates OXYCONTIN 80mg manufactured and marketed by MUNDIPHARMA in the Polish market. MUNDIPHARMA has confirmed that the product was falsified and was not produced by their company.

“This falsified product has been found to contain undeclared nitazene compounds, which pose a significant risk due to the high likelihood of adverse events, even in small doses. Nitazenes produce similar effects to other opioids.

“Their high potency carries a high risk of overdose and death. Using nitazene derivatives has been linked to several deaths.

“Mixing them with other depressants like alcohol or benzodiazepines can be very dangerous, leading to severe effects like respiratory depression, low blood pressure, coma, or even death,” NAFDAC said.

It said that this falsified product posed a particular risk to individuals with substance use disorders who might perceive this falsified product as a safe and quality-assured medicine.

NAFDAC said that visible discrepancies were observed on the falsified product such as the placement of the batch and expiry dates on the counterfeit product were incorrect.

It added that the falsified product batch and expiry date are visible on the front side of the blister strip, adding that genuine OXYCONTIN has the batch and expiry date visible on the back of the blister strip.

NAFDAC stated that on the falsified product, the expiry date is on the left and the batch number is on the right, pointing out that genuine OXYCONTIN has the batch number on the left and the expiry date on the right.

According to NAFDAC, all its zonal directors and state coordinators have been instructed to conduct surveillance and retrieve any falsified products of this medicine found within their zones and states in Nigeria.

It said that importers, distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals, and consumers are hereby advised to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid importation, distribution, sale, and use of falsified OXYCONTIN tablets.

NAFDAC said that all medical products/ medical devices must be obtained from authorised/licensed suppliers, stressing that products’ authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked.

It advised healthcare professionals and consumers to report any suspicion of the sale of substandard and falsified medicines or medical devices to the nearest NAFDAC office, or call NAFDAC on 0800-162-3322 or via email: sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.

It said that healthcare professionals and patients are also encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of medicinal products or devices to the nearest NAFDAC office.

NAFDAC said that healthcare professionals and patients could also report to the agency through the use of the E-reporting platforms available on the NAFDAC website www.nafdac.gov.ng or via the Med- safety application available for download on android and IOS stores or via e-mail on pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

FG approves NYSC mobilisation for full-time HND graduates

The Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, has announced that all full-time Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates will now be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The resolution of the long-standing issue regarding their mobilisation is contained in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Thursday by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, Folasade Boriowo.

Boriowo quoted Alausa as saying that after discussions with the Director-General of NYSC, only full-time HND graduates were eligible and could thereafter proceed with their mobilisation.

This development, he said, marked a major breakthrough for full-time HND graduates who were previously excluded from the NYSC programme.

According to him, it underscores the Federal Ministry of Education’s commitment to equity, fairness, and inclusivity in the nation’s education system.

“However, those who did HND part-time are not eligible for mobilisation at all.

“To facilitate a seamless mobilisation process, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has been directed to expedite the collation of data for eligible HND graduates.

“In line with this, a circular has been sent to all Rectors of Polytechnics, instructing them to upload the necessary graduate data onto the newly created HND admission portal,” he said.

Alausa emphasised that NYSC mobilisation was strictly for those who completed a full-time HND programme.

He stressed that only full-time HND graduates would be mobilised, while those who did HND part-time remained ineligible.

He further disclosed that the newly created portal would ensure proper documentation of full-time HND graduates.

He added that this would also serve as the official database for NYSC mobilisation, addressing past challenges related to admission records.

The minister urged all eligible full-time HND graduates to take full advantage of this opportunity and proceed with their mobilisation without delay.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering equal opportunities for all qualified Nigerian graduates and ensuring their contributions to national development through the NYSC scheme. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
