NSE OSOGBO VISITS COLLAPSED BUILDING IN EDE, WARNS AGAINST BUILDING WITHOUT ENGAGING COMPETENT PROFESSIONALS
The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Osogbo Branch, on Saturday, 31st October, 2026, at about 3:25pm, visited the site of a collapsed 3-storey shopping complex under construction at Apete Area, Owode-Ede, Ede North LGA, Osun State, to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Branch therefore warned residents against the use of inferior materials and building without engaging competent professionals and without approval from relevant agencies.

Engr. Asimiyu Amobi Oyediran, MNSE, FNICE, Chairman of NSE Osogbo Branch, who led the delegation, which included Past Chairman, Engr. Emmanuel Olawale Alonge, FNSE, Chairman, Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), Engr. Mrs. Elizabeth Oyedamola Ayeni, MNSE, and the Publicity Secretary, Engr. Muslihudeen Olayinka Ibrahim, MNSE, to the collapsed building, condemned the act of building without competent professionals, self-supervision by non-professionals, and indulgence in quackery.

Preliminary assessment of the collapsed building revealed that:
1. Substandard materials were used, including 12mm reinforcement rods for a 3-storey structure, poor concrete mix, and low-strength blocks.
2. Poor workmanship was observed on site.
3. There was no evidence of an approved building plan, structural design, or engagement of a COREN-registered Engineer.
4. The collapse is not flood-related. No water pressure was observed as a contributory factor.
5. The collapse affected the fence of an adjoining building. No proper setbacks were provided, and the staircase shared a boundary with the highway drain, while three (3) fatalities were reported.
NSE Osogbo commiserates with the families of the deceased and calls on the public to always engage registered professionals for all building projects and ensure building projects are executed in line with the best engineering practice.
