Mr Sagir Gezewa, SAN, has called on politicians in the country to respect the will of the electorate come 2027 general elections.

Gezewa, who was newly conferred with the rank of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), spoke Monday evening in an interview at a reception held in his honour in Abuja.

The legal practitioner urged the political actors to allow the outcome of the polls reflect the free and fair expression of Nigerians.

“The first thing I will say is that this season of election does not present a lot of cases.

“In the previous cycles of election, by now, there would be a lot of pre-election matters pending in our courts, which is not the case presently,” he said.

He said his expectation in the forthcoming polls was to see that elections are primarily determined by voters and not through prolonged legal battles.

“Let the election be determined at the ballot.

“Let Nigerians be allowed to express themselves freely and fairly, and let the actors also accept the will of Nigerians,” he said.

Gezewa urged lawyers and other stakeholders in the justice system to uphold justice and the rule of law if electoral disputes arise after the polls.

He described legal practitioners as ministers in the temple of justice and called on them to ensure that their conduct in election-related cases remained guided by justice, fairness and the national interest.

The lawyer pledged his continued dedication to the administration of justice, the promotion of the rule of law and the mentorship of young lawyers.

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mrs Oyinkansola Badejo-Okunsanya; former Kano State Governor, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and a Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice Lawal Shaibu, congratulated Gezewa on his conferment with the prestigious rank.

They described his elevation as a significant milestone in his legal career and urged him to use the honour to advance the legal profession and serve humanity.

At least 68 legal practitioners were conferred with the rank of SAN on Monday at the Supreme Court in Abuja.
