Customs Service Marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month In Abuja
Abuja, Oct. 7, 2026 (NAN) The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Monday marked Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a sensitisation programme at its Headquarters, Maitama, Abuja.
The programme, themed Inspect, Detect, Protect, brought together officers, medical professionals and partners to promote awareness, early detection and prevention of breast cancer.
The Deputy Comptroller-General, ICT/Modernisation, Oluyomi Adebakin, who represented the Comptroller-General, Adewale Adeniyi, said cancer should not be regarded as stigma.
She said cancer was not the end of life, urging officers to remain vigilant about health and prioritise education and sensitisation for early detection.
Adebakin said, “Cancer isn’t a stigma. It is a time to give attention to those affected and give them hope again.
“Together, we can build a healthier society, a healthier Service, and healthier communities,” Adebakin said.
The President, Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi, was Special Guest of Honour and keynote speaker at the event.
She urged officers, particularly women, to prioritise health through regular self-examination and timely medical attention, stressing importance of early detection for survival.
Adeniyi said women often focused on family wellbeing while neglecting their own health, adding that male officers should support women in families and communities.
She said, “Fellow officers, you must be alive before you get promoted. Check on yourself,” noting breast cancer could also affect men.
The Project Manager, BOYA Project, Fauziya Abubakar, said the initiative had championed breast cancer awareness within NCS for three years.
Abubakar stressed need for sustained sensitisation and regular screening, noting early detection remained critical in addressing the disease nationwide.
A highlight was a N50 million pledge by Managing Director, Trade Modernisation Project Ltd., Dr Jummai Umar-Ajijola, to support fight against breast cancer.
The programme featured health talk, medical session, survivor testimony, question-and-answer segment and free breast cancer screening for officers and participants.
