The appointment of Mr. Sakariya Mohammed Taofiq as Special Adviser on Rural Development by the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has brought into focus a public servant whose career has been shaped by grassroots engagement, administrative experience, political participation and a sustained commitment to community development.
With a career spanning business, local government administration, legislative duties and political organisation, Taofiq comes into the new responsibility with a wealth of experience that cuts across different levels of public service.
Born on March 15, 1971, in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, and a native of Ogbomoso North Local Government Area, Taofiq has consistently demonstrated an interest in leadership, human development and public service.
His academic background reflects a deliberate preparation for administrative, governance and development responsibilities. He holds a Master’s degree in Election Administration from the University of Ibadan, a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Ilorin, and a Master’s degree in Transport Management Technology from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), obtained in 2023.
He also holds a Bachelor of Education (Social Studies) from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a Nigeria Certificate in Education from the Federal College of Education, Kontagora.
His multidisciplinary academic background, spanning public administration, election administration, transport management and social studies, provides a broad intellectual foundation for his new responsibility, particularly in an area where infrastructure, mobility, community access and effective public administration are important components of rural development.
His professional journey began in the private sector, where he worked with the International Tobacco Company, Ogbomoso Branch, before taking up managerial and entrepreneurial responsibilities in businesses including Waskha Petroleum, Texaco Filling Station and Waskha Communication Palace.
Beyond business, Taofiq gradually established himself as a community-oriented leader. His involvement with the Ogbomoso Zonal Football Association, where he served as Treasurer from 2004 to 2012, further demonstrated his engagement with youth and grassroots activities.
His leadership experience also includes service as Secretary of the Student Union at the Federal College of Education, Kontagora, and Secretary of the Federation of Oyo State Students Union, ABU Chapter. He subsequently served as Corps Liaison Officer in Ideato South Local Government Council, Imo State.
His public service career gained further momentum at the local government level when he served as Supervisory Councillor for Education, Community Development, Information, Sports, Youth Development and Social Services in Ogbomoso North Local Government between 2004 and 2006. During the same period, he served as a member of the Local Government Education Board and as Secretary of the Oyo State Supervisory Councillors’ Forum.
At the state level, Taofiq served as Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff to the Executive Governor of Oyo State, and later continued his public-sector engagement at the National Assembly, where he served as a Senior Legislative Aide to the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives.
His legislative experience was further strengthened by his service as Special Assistant to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, giving him exposure to legislative processes, public policy, political administration and the workings of government at the national level.
Taofiq’s political activities have also spanned several years. His engagements include service as Legal Adviser to Youth Earnestly Ask for Obasanjo (YAFO), participation in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogbomoso North, and involvement in various political campaigns, delegate activities and electoral contests.
His appointment as Special Adviser on Rural Development therefore adds another significant chapter to a career characterised by grassroots involvement and public administration.
Rural development remains an important component of inclusive governance, particularly in strengthening communities, improving access to opportunities and ensuring that development initiatives reach people beyond urban centres. With his background in public administration, community development, transport management, political organisation and legislative affairs, Taofiq brings a broad range of experience to the assignment.
Known for qualities including transparency, honesty, administrative acumen, networking ability, respect for others, perseverance and the capacity to work under pressure, he has built a profile around service, relationship-building and organisational responsibility.
His new assignment under the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde provides an opportunity to deploy these experiences towards advancing rural development across Oyo State.
For a man whose professional and political journey has repeatedly taken him from the grassroots to government and legislative institutions, the new role represents another chapter of public service, with rural development firmly at the centre of his new mandate.
From Ogbomoso to the corridors of government and the National Assembly, Sakariya Mohammed Taofiq now begins a new chapter of public service — bringing years of administrative, political, community and academic experience to the rural development agenda of Oyo State.
