President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed satisfaction with the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which upholds the constitutional rights of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Councils (LGCs) to receive their funds directly from the Federation Account.

This landmark judgement, announced on Thursday, July 11, 2024, marks a significant step towards strengthening governance at the grassroots level.

In his statement following the court’s decision, Tinubu noted the historical challenges faced by local government administrations in effectively serving their communities.

He emphasized that the autonomy granted by the Supreme Court would empower local council leaders to better address the needs of Nigerians living in every corner of the country.

Our correspondent reports that the Supreme Court’s ruling mandates the Federal Government to ensure the direct transfer of funds to the accounts of local councils, bypassing state government control to enhance transparency and accountability in the management of public resources at the local level.

Justice Emmanuel Agim, delivering the lead judgement, admonished against the historical practice of state governments withholding funds meant for local councils, thereby hindering their operational capabilities.

The court’s directive underscores the importance of democratic governance and the rule of law in Nigeria’s federal structure.

President Tinubu stressed the imperative for local government leaders to prioritize people-oriented service delivery, focusing on essential amenities such as infrastructure maintenance, community security, and other public goods crucial for grassroots development.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to building a governance framework that prioritizes efficiency and performance, benefiting all Nigerians.

Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity speaking on behalf of his boss quoted him as stating, “This judgement reaffirms our commitment to restructuring Nigeria’s economy and governance systems, ensuring a fairer society for all citizens.”

Tinubu also commended the efforts of the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for his dedication to advancing the case on behalf of the Federal Government.

He emphasized that protecting the constitutional rights of local governments is pivotal to fostering equitable development and strengthening Nigeria’s democratic fabric.

President Tinubu underscored the significance of the Supreme Court’s decision in advancing Nigeria’s federalism and ensuring that resources are judiciously utilized for the benefit of all Nigerians.

He pledged to continue supporting initiatives aimed at promoting good governance and socio-economic progress across the nation.
