Police dock 77-yr-old blind man over possession of Indian hemp

The Osun State Police Command has arraigned a 77-year-old blind man, Kareem Adebayo, at a magistrate court in Osogbo, the state capital, for allegedly possessing Indian hemp.

The accused person, who is also an ex-convict, was arraigned before Magistrate Risikat Olayemi and charged with a two-count bordering on Indian hemp possession and breach of public peace.

The accused was said to have possessed one huge bag  containing a large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

He was also said to have conducted himself in a manner likely to have caused breach of peace.

The offences were said to have occurred on November 5, 2019, at about 6:30pm at Odofin compound Okuku in Osun State.

According to the details of the offence, it was contrary to and punishable under section 430, 249(D) of the Criminal Code Cap 38(C) vol 11 laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2003.

The accused pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him.

The police prosecutor, Idowu  Rachael, said the accused was an ex-convict, who   has been arrested by the NDLEA sometimes, and had been remanded twice in prison, and continued to be  an Indian hemp seller.

The accused, whose legal representative is absent, said he could neither identify nor know his name.

Magistrate Olayemi considering the age and the health of the accused person, refused to remand him.

She, however, transferred the case to the Chief Magistrate Court Okuku for mentioning on November 11, 2019.
