Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, former Finance Minister has revealed the “dirty secret” behind the funding of political campaigns in Nigeria.

The former Managing Director of World Bank stated this while speaking about her recent book, “Fighting Corruption is Dangerous” at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

According to Okonjo-Iweala, “People are happy to see the symptoms being taken care of, punitive measure, you know it makes big headlines when people are hauled off to jail and the media blasts the story, which is good, there ought to be consequences and punitive actions but it’s not enough.

“If you don’t fix some of the root causes, the next set of people will come in, and with those opportunities, they might do the same thing.

“Part of the monies for the treasury are diverted to finance political campaigns. Is this right? The answer is no.”

Miss Africa seeks more support for female farmers

Miss Africa, Precious Okoye, has called on governments of African countries to increase their support for female farmers, who contribute to food production and preservation.

Okoye made the call in Saki, Oyo State, during the implementation of her pet project on Agro-Industrialisation where she empowered more than 30 female farmers with 50kg bags of fertiliser.

She said in recognition of the contribution of these women to farming, her pet project was to encourage local female farmers to keep up with agriculture.

She explained that they contribute immensely to the growth of the economy by helping to produce and preserve food.

“I am pleading with the government and private sector across Nigeria and Africa to support me on this project as I am looking at carrying out this project in six geo-political zones and in Africa.

“It is to enable female farmers to be more productive, save them time and energy and also get the job done.

“These women are going through so much and usually farm with their bare hands and we can make their lives better and also create more job opportunities for them.”

She urged the government to support women farmers with fertilizers and machinery that can make their lives easier.

“With these local farmers we can help our GDP and boost the economy for sustainability,” she said.

In his remarks, the Royal Father who received Okoye, the Okere of Saki, King Khalid Oyebisi, congratulated the beauty queen for emerging as Miss Africa.

“I think this is the first of its kind in Nigeria. I also want to commend her on her choice of pet project which is to assist female farmers.

“As we all know, Saki is known for farming for both males and females and this will boost the number of females that will go into farming if this kind of project is done yearly.

“We thank God for her life and her presence here will encourage other young girls to see her for the first time here, as Miss Africa in their domain.

“It will inspire them and make them work hard and aspire to be one in the future,” Oyebisi said.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Aderemilekun Ojo, commended Okoye, adding that God will bless her as they can do much with what was given to them.

CAR MOVING WITH 3 TYRES ARRESTED AND DRIVER PROSECUTED BY FRSC OGUN SECTOR COMMAND, ABEOKUTA

Abuja (Flowerbudnews): In line with Corp’s Marshall directive on total clampdown on rickety vehicles led to the arrest of a Toyota Camry car moving with only 3 tyres along Abeokuta – Sagamu Expressway on Monday 4 Sept. 2023.

The arrest of the Toyota Camry car with registration number FFF 522 TK was made by a patrol team of FRSC Ogun Sector Command, Abeokuta while performing their statutory duties and the driver charged to Court for driving mechanical deficiency vehicle

The enforcement against dangerous vehicles was intensified by FRSC Ogun State Command after a recent video of a car moving with 3 tyres along the same Abeokuta – Sagamu Expressway went viral.

shun any acts that will jeopardize their safety and that of other road users.

FRSC CORPS MARSHAL CONDOLES WITH FAMILIES OF VICTIMS OF ONITSHA – NTEJE – AWKA EXPRESS WAY CRASH, CALLS ON MOTORISTS TO BE CONSCIOUS OF THEIR ENVIRONMENT

As a result of the recent crash that occurred along Onitsha, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dauda Ali Biu has condoled with the families of victims of the crash along Ontitsh-Inteje-Akwa axis, and also called on fleet and other commercial vehicle operators, as well as private vehicle owners to exercise caution and be conscious of their environments whenever they drive and also to avoid driving against stipulated speed limit on all roads. This is to eradicate all incidences of road mishap arising from impatience and lack of mental alertness when on wheels.

This advice came following the fatal crash that occurred involving a Mitsubishi L300 commercial Bus with vehicle registration number XE 245 AWK and a DAF Leyland Truck with registration number T-19094 LA at the aforementioned route which involved 10 people, killed 5 Female Adults, injured 2 Male Adults and 2 female adults.

According to the first information report from the scene of the crash, eyewitnesses stated that the DAF Leyland truck was coming from Onitsha while the Mitsubishi L300 bus was coming from Nteje axis and both vehicles got to the failed portion at the same time when the container of the Leyland Truck fell on the Mitsubishi Bus.

The Corps Marshal seized the opportunity to commend FRSC operatives whose prompt response to the distressing situation led to immediate evacuation of the victims of the crash to Divine Care Hospital Umunya and Chira Hospital for medical attention, and clearance of obstruction to ensure free flow of traffic within the axis.

CAC BOSS BAGS ICSAN FELLOWSHIP AWARD:

The Registrar-General/CEO of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Alhaji Garba Abubakar, has become a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN).

Alhaji Garba Abubakar was among six distinguished Nigerians conferred with Honorary Fellowship Awards by the institute at its 47th Annual Conference and Dinner, themed “Sound Governance as a Cursor to a Thriving Economy: A Case for Inclusiveness”.

Conferring the award on them, the ICSAN President/Chairman of Council, Mrs. Funmi Ekundayo, FCIS, described their performance in governance as superlative and worthy of emulation.

Funmi Ekundayo, who stressed that ICSAN places great emphasis on ethics and uprightness,
congratulated the awardees on their professional accomplishments.

Ekundayo, who maintained that the feat represents the Zenith of professional membership, charged them not to view the achievement as the destination.

She said the award signifies the beginning of a new chapter in their career, providing them the opportunity to learn, relearn, and unlearn through capacity-building programmes, amongst others.

In his remarks, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, congratulated the awardees on the achievements recorded in their respective fields of endeavour to enable them to make the list of wardees.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Bimbola Salu -hundeyin
used the forum to congratulate Funmi Ekundayo for becoming the first female president of ICSAN since its inception 47 years ago.

Among several speakers at the event was former Minister of Communications Omobola Johnson, who stressed the need for more inclusiveness for women in accordance with the conference theme.

In his remarks, Senator Ishaku Elisha Abbo (representing Adamawa North Senatorial District) congratulated the awardees with special reference to the Registrar General, whom he described as a good friend.

Senator Abo stated the resolve of the National Assembly to support the programmes and policies of the present administration in the country in order to ensure a better and more prosperous Nigeria.

Responding on behalf of the honorary fellowship award recipients, Senator Margery Chuba Okadigbo thanked ICSAN for finding them worthy of the honours and pledged to justify the confidence reposed in them.

For his part, Alhaji Garba Abubakar, shortly after his induction as a fellow of ICSAN, pledged to rededicate himself to greater service.

It would be recalled that Alhaji Garba Abubakar has accomplished the full digitization of all CAC services, thereby becoming the only government agency with a full-pledged self-service portal.

Newest on the array of successes recorded by him is the launch of the Beneficial Ownership Register (BOR), which made history for becoming the first in Africa and is in line with global data standards.

CAC News reports that also on the list of the six distinguished recipients of ICSAN honorary fellowships are Ambassador Shuaibu Adamu Ahmed, Executive Secretary/CEO Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of Nigeria, and Professor Abubakar O. Sulaiman, Director General, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).

Others are Engineer Etido Inyang and Mrs. Ekerebong Umoh.
