  • Dog opens Russian airliner’s luggage hold, forcing emergency landing

A dog managed to open an airliner’s luggage hold during a flight from St Petersburg to Moscow, forcing the crew to conduct an emergency landing, Russia’s Interfax news agency reported Monday.

The dog, described as being “not large,” broke out of its kennel and “triggered activation” of the luggage hold’s door, causing the door to open several dozen centimetres and setting off an alarm, according to the report.

The Boeing 737 was at an altitude of about 4,000 metres on its descent to Moscow, the report said.

Luckily for the dog, it “did not crawl out and remained alive,” a source at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport was quoted as saying.(dpa/NAN)

  • Migrants stranded without aid as Tunisia refuses to let ship dock

TUNIS (Reuters) – A Tunisian boat carrying around 40 African migrants has been stranded off the country’s coast without aid for more than a week after authorities refused to let them disembark there, the Red Crescent said on Monday.

Monji Slim, an official of the Tunisian Red Crescent, said the authorities had argued that Malta or Italy should accept the migrants. The Tunisian interior ministry declined to comment.

Slim told Reuters the boat was stuck 12 miles off the coast. “The African migrants at sea are in a bad condition after the vessel’s captain refused to receive aid to pressure the Tunisian authorities to receive them, but no solution has been reached after 11 days at sea.”

It was not clear from where the migrants had originally set off before they were rescued by the Tunisian vessel.

The new Italian government has closed its ports to charity ships operating in the Mediterranean, saying the European Union must share the burden of accepting the hundreds of migrants who are plucked from waters each month, mostly off the Libyan coast.

Rome called this month for migrant centres to be set up in Africa to stop a tide of asylum-seekers fleeing toward western Europe. Tunisia has rejected this proposal.

At least 80 migrants died when their boat sank off the Tunisian coast last month, one of the worst migrant boat accidents in the North African country of recent years.

Human traffickers are increasingly using Tunisia as a launch pad for migrants heading to Europe as the Libyan coast guard, aided by armed groups, has tightened controls.

Suspected Boko Haram militants kill 18 in Chadian village

N’DJAMENA, July 23 (Reuters) – Suspected Boko Haram militants killed 18 farmers and kidnapped nine women in western Chad, authorities said, part of a wave of violence that has spread from neighbouring Nigeria across the region.

The attackers came into the village of Mayerom in Lake Chad region after dark on Thursday last week and slit the farmers’ throats, governor Mahamat Abali Saleh told Reuters.

The fighters took nine women, but one had since escaped, he said.

  • De Beers to move 200 elephants from South Africa to Mozambique

De Beers to move 200 elephants from South Africa to Mozambique

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) – Diamond producer De Beers said on Monday it was relocating 200 elephants from its private reserve in South Africa to neighbouring Mozambique, part of wider efforts to restore wildlife populations ravaged by conflict there.

The Anglo American unit said its 32,000-hectare )80,000-acre) Venetia Limpopo Nature Reserve could support around 60 elephants but now had 270, causing “extensive damage to an ecosystem that must sustain a diverse wildlife population.”

The world’s largest land mammals have a jumbo-sized impact on their terrain and in many South African parks, which are fenced to contain them, populations have reached levels where the vegetation cannot support their numbers.

De Beers said the elephants would be moved 1,500 km (1,000 miles) to Mozambique’s Zinave National Park, which has over 400,000 hectares and an elephant population of only 60.

Mozambique’s wildlife numbers were badly hit by a 15-year civil war that ended in 1992. In more recent years, its remaining elephant populations have been targeted by ivory poachers.

The operation is being conducted with the Peace Parks Foundation (PPF) conservation group, and De Beers said it was providing it with $500,000 to support anti-poaching efforts.

“Ecosystems require a range of fauna and flora to stay balanced. If you remove one species, such as elephant, it has a ripple effect on the whole system,” said Werner Myburgh, the chief executive of the PPF.

“The reintroduction of elephants to Mozambique will bring us one step closer to achieving our dream of restoring the landscape.”

Elephants are extremely social animals and family groups will be kept together for the translocation, a huge logistical undertaking that will include darting operations and the movement of tranquilised animals over long distances by road.

  • China, Rwanda vow to write new chapter in bilateral ties

KIGALI, July 23 (Xinhua) — Visiting Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame, agreed here on Monday to further promote bilateral cooperation in a bid to bring more benefits to the Chinese people, the Rwandan people and the African people.

The two leaders hailed the growth of bilateral ties over the past 47 years since the establishment of diplomatic relationship.

Xi recalled his meeting with Kagame in Beijing in March 2017, when they reached extensive consensus on promoting bilateral relations and friendly cooperation.

Such consensus has helped bring China-Rwanda ties to a fast track of development.

Beijing is willing to work with Kigali to transform bilateral traditional friendship into concrete benefits to the two countries and the two peoples, and turn a new chapter in their friendly cooperative relations, Xi said.

China welcomes Rwanda’s participation in the international cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, and encourages more Chinese investment in Rwanda to help advance the African country’s industrialization and modernization, Xi said.

Xi arrived in Kigali on Sunday for a state visit to Rwanda, the first by a Chinese head of state to the African country.

  • Acid attack raises concerns again in Britain as toddler seriously injured

LONDON, July 23 (Xinhua) — Three men have been arrested after a three-year-old boy was seriously injured in a targeted acid attack in Worcester, England, the police said Monday.

West Mercia Police said three men, aged 22, 25 and 26 respectively, were arrested in London on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm. The motive for the attack is so far unclear.

The boy was in a pushchair when he was “deliberately attacked” at a retail shop in Worcester on Saturday afternoon. He was treated for serious burns to his arm and face, before being discharged from hospital on Sunday afternoon.

The long-term implications of his injuries are unknown, according to the police.

The acid attack shocked local communities as well as the media nationwide.

Britain has one of the highest rates of acid attacks per capita in the world, according to Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI). It claims the country does not have “tight controls on acid sales” or “legislation specific to acid attacks”.

ASTI’s figures, quoting the police, reveal the number of recorded attacks has increased nearly three-fold from 228 recorded crimes in 2012 to 601 attacks in 2016.

Last year was widely regarded as the worst ever with more than 400 incidents reported in the six months to April 2017 alone.

There are plans to further restrict the sale of corrosive substances, but the attacks are still on the rise.

Criminologists believe gang members may be swapping guns and knives for acid as a weapon of choice because possession is hard to monitor but its impact on victims can be devastating.

  • Despite EU deal, 1,200 migrants reach Italy from Turkey: Salvini

ROME, July 23 (Xinhua) — Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini said Monday that 1,200 migrants have reached Italy from Turkey by sea this year, in spite of a European Union (EU) deal signed in 2016 that was designed to stop the flow of asylum seekers along the so-called Eastern Mediterranean route.

“Since the beginning of the year, 1,200 immigrants who arrived by sea from Turkey have disembarked in Italy,” tweeted Salvini, who also serves as interior minister and who leads the far-right League party.

“The EU gives Turkey 6 billion euros (7 billion U.S. dollars) to control immigration. Something’s not right, is someone failing to do what they should?” he tweeted.

Speaking at an impromptu televized press conference after donating blood earlier in the day, Salvini said that a recent spate of fatal migrant shipwrecks in the Mediterranean was down to “backlash from (human) traffickers, who… use deflated rubber dinghies, broken-down engines and vessels in desperate conditions.”

“They are criminals and murderers,” Salvini told reporters.

Salvini spoke in response to questions about his hardline anti-immigrant policies, which include closing Italy’s ports to international humanitarian vessels with rescued migrants on board.

“We are working to have fewer departures and fewer arrivals,” the right-wing leader explained. “The fewer people leave the fewer will die — this is what my role as (interior) minister demands.”

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 17,838 asylum seekers reached Italy and 1,107 people died or went missing in the attempt between Jan. 1-July 18 this year.

This compares with over 93,000 arrivals and 2,221 deaths in the same period last year, according to the IOM.

According to EU border agency Frontex, in the first half of 2018 the total number of irregular crossings into the EU nearly halved from a year ago to 60,430, mainly because of lower migratory pressure on the Central Mediterranean route.

“The number of migrants arriving in Italy via the Central Mediterranean route in June fell to about 3,000, down 87 percent from June 2017,” Frontex said in a statement out Monday. “The total number of migrants detected on this route in the first half of 2018 fell to roughly 16,100, down 81 percent from a year ago.”

On a global level, record numbers of human beings are on the move due to war and other humanitarian emergencies, with over 40 million internally displaced people and more than 22 million refugees, according to the IOM’s 2018 World Migration Report.

  • Princess Diana: Old Trump interviews surface online, cause uproar

US President Donald Trump. PHOTO: REUTERS

Old transcripts and audios of Donald Trump interviews with radio host Howard Stern recently surfaced online, sparking outrage.

Talks between the current US president and Stern ranged from crude talk about celebrities to their sex lives. In a 1997 interview, the duo disrespected recently deceased Princess Diana with Stern suggesting that Trump “could have nailed” her and the latter agreeing.

Referring to an earlier discussion where Trump said he required women to go through an HIV test before he sleeps with them. “I wouldn’t say I do this, but you could send lots of people you really like to the doctor before you ever get to know them,” Trump suggests.

Responding to Stern when he asks how Trump would get Lady Diana, known for her philanthropic work, to the doctor, the US president says he would tell her: “Go back over to my Lexus, because I have a new doctor. We wanna give you a little checkup.”

Trump then goes on to pass crude remarks on the British royal, Beyonce and Britney Spears.

This not the first time the US president has been caught on record making derogatory comments about women. During the 2016 US election campaign, Trump was criticised for lewd remarks he made during the filming of the show Access Hollywood.
