Breaking: President Tinubu Resolves Ondo State Political Crisis

Opposing Factions Vow to Uphold Peace, Maintain Status Quo

    By Biola Lawal

Abuja (Flowerbudnews):.  In his bid to restore political stability in Ondo State, President Bola Tinubu, late on Friday, waded into the months-long crisis in the All Progressive Party (APC) controlled state government.

The bickering was between factions loyal to the Executive Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and the Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The resolution was the outcome of a marathon negotiations between the President and the Deputy Governor, representatives of Governor Akeredolu, federal and state lawmakers of Ondo, officials of the state’s chapter of the All Progressives’ Congress, and other stakeholders in the state at the State House, Abuja.

A statement by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity disclosed that the President advised all opposing parties to bury the hatchet and embrace peace, eliciting commitments to this effect.

This meant that Governor Akeredolu remains Chief Executive of the State, Aiyedatiwa remains Deputy Governor, and members of the State Executive Council continue their respective duties, even as the leadership of the State’s House of Assembly and the APC Chapter in Ondo State is preserved.

Mr. Aiyedatiwa, who declared his decision to maintain the status quo and unite all the factions, said: “I want to say that I pledge to all of you that I embrace every one of you. I put behind all that has happened before now. I’ve let go and also let God, just as the President has advised us.

“And I want to say that with no offence, no guile in my mind whatsoever. All that has happened is politics. Impeachment is part of politics. If you survive it, it is also politics. It has come. I’ve survived it, and every other thing is in the past.

“It is one big family and our father has intervened to bring all the children together to remain under the same family and with the position that I occupy, I will carry every one of you along in every decision that needs to be taken and in everything that we do, we will work together; the executive and the legislature will work together to ensure that governance is on the right track.”

He pleaded with all members of the State Executive Council to rally around the Governor and himself to “bring the dividend of democracy” to the people of Ondo State.

“All the Executive Council members, I want to plead with all of you to cooperate with me, with the Governor, so that we can bring the dividend of democracy to our people.

“We should respect one another regarding the offices we occupy and our age differences. So, it’s going to be mutual respect.

“And I want to assure the party structure that we will work together because the party is supreme. We will always give you your due respect,” the Ondo State Deputy Governor pledged.

The Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oladiji Olamide, who read the details of the resolution, said, “Our resolution is that one, we shall embrace peace. Secondly, there would be no more dissolution of the cabinet, and the Deputy Governor would maintain the status quo as far as the House of Assembly leadership is concerned.

“We will maintain the status quo as far as the party leadership in the state is concerned and maintain the status quo as far as the leadership of the State House of Assembly is concerned. Thank you, Mr. President.”

On her part, the Secretary to the State Government, Princess Oladunni Odu, stated, “Our Father, the President, has taken the trouble to settle our rancour in Ondo State. We owe you all the gratitude, Sir. We will not disappoint you. We have taken every word you said. And we are going home as one united family under the party, APC.”

In his remarks, the Ondo State APC Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, expressed delight at the outcome of Friday’s late night deliberations, affirming that the party will remain a watchdog to ensure that the new commitments are adhered to.

“Today is my happiest moment. And I know sanity has come to Ondo State. So, on behalf of the teeming supporters of our party in the state, we appreciate our leader

43 items not totally banned, clarifies Cardoso Items

    By Lydia Ngwakwe
Lagos:  The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Olayemi Cardoso, has clarified that the 43 items were never explicitly prohibited from importation or sale in Nigeria.

Cardoso gave this clarification at the 58th Annual Bankers’ Dinner organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) on Friday in Lagos.

He, however, explained that the apex bank had implemented restrictions on accessing foreign exchange for the importation of these items.

Cardoso emphasised that the issue of trade policy, specifically the importation and sale of the 43 items, was primarily within the domain of the fiscal authorities, not the CBN.

This distinction, he said, was important because it clarifies that the CBN’s decision to lift the foreign exchange restrictions on these items was not intended to encroach upon the responsibilities of other government agencies.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the CBN had in a circular in June 2015, published a list of imported goods and services that will not be eligible for foreign exchange in the Nigerian foreign currency market.

The list which was originally 41 was updated to include two more items.

But the CBN precisely on Oct. 12 2023, announced that it had lifted the ban on the issuance of foreign exchange for the importation of rice, vegetable oil, and poultry products among other 43 items.

Cardoso said, “Allow me to provide further clarification on the issue of the 43 items.
“Firstly, it is important to note that these items were never outrightly banned by the government.

“The CBN had imposed restrictions on their access to foreign exchange in the official market.

“However, these restrictions resulted in increased demand for foreign exchange in the parallel market, leading to the depreciation of the exchange rate in that segment of the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market and widening the premium between the parallel and official market.’’

Cardoso said studies had shown that during the period when the 43 items were restricted, there was a 51.0 per cent increase in trade evasion by importers accessing the foreign exchange market.

According to him, this resulted in a revenue drop of approximately $1.4 billion, or $275 million annually, between 2015 and 2019.
Cardoso added that revenue from tariffs on goods decreased from a high of approximately $920 million in 2011 to about $250 million in 2017.
“In 2019, the actual tariff on goods stood at $320 million, but counterfactual evidence suggests that as much as $680 million could have been earned in the same year,” he said.
He added that evidence had shown that foreign exchange restrictions had an adverse impact on Nigerian households and contributed to inflationary pressures.
Cardoso said the reduction in trade restrictions and levies on rice, sugar, and wheat by 50.0 per cent had only a minimal impact on welfare, with a 0.8 per cent improvement, and a mere 0.4 per cent reduction in extreme poverty.
Cardoso explained that the benefits of trade gains for the general population were negligible, as the average industry in Nigeria pays 13.7 per cent more for its inputs.
According to the CBN, this action will boost liquidity in the Nigerian foreign exchange market and intervene from time to time, adding that interventions will decrease as liquidity improves.

Meanwhile, a former CBN Director, Prof. Akpan Ekpo, told NAN that the apex bank made a big error by opening up the foreign exchange market.

He said, “It is an error because the dollar, pound and euro is not our money, we only get dollars when we sell oil mainly.

“Our economy is not productive and we don’t have firms that manufacture non-oil goods services, export them and earn forex.

“So, our naira is not convertible, in that case every country like ours will have what they called managed float.

“So when you come and put in more dollars because you have gotten more forex, these are very short term measures, they are not sustainable, so the problem is a supply and access problem,’’ he said.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng) /Flowerbudnews

New Aseyin Gets Mercedes Benz S Class  As Gift From Honourable Peller

    By Adewale Owoade

A former House of Representative, Honourable Shina Peller, has gifted a Mercedes Benz luxury car, to the new Aseyin of Iseyinland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Sefiu  Oyebola Adeyeri III,.

The S-Class Mercedes Benz was presented to the monarch in his house when Honourable Peller paid him a surprise visit.

Earlier in his congratulatory message to the monarch, Hpn. Peller, the Ayedero of Yorubaland, had expressed confidence that Oba Oyebola’s ascension to the throne will usher in desirable development to Iseyinland.

Iseyin is regarded as the gateway to Oke Ogun region.  Oke Ogun region in Oyo State is blessed with diverse landscape, natural resources and fertile land, which offer immense opportunities to investors particularly in agriculture.

Some of the great potentials of Iseyin are Ikere Gorge Dam and Ado Awaye Suspended Lake which is one of the only two suspended lakes in the world. Unfortunately, these resources have remained tapped.

With the emergence of Oba Oyebola as the Aseyin of Iseyinland, many people including the Ayedero of Yorubaland and Oyo State Government have expressed optimism that the monarch’s personality will go a long way in bringing about development to Iseyin and Oke-Ogun at large.

Historically, the bond between Honourable Peller and Oba Adeyeri III could be traced to the previous generation. The late Professor Moshood Abiola Peller and late Oba Adeyeri II, who reigned as the Aseyin of Iseyin from 1978 to 1996, enjoined a very cordial relationship with each other.

Many decades after, that cordial relationship between the two families still exists as evident in the case of Honourable Peller and Oba Adeyeri III. Indeed, some relationships are evergreen and transcending!

Oba Oyebola, until his ascension to the throne, lived and worked in the United States of America with his family and has continuously shown interest in the welfare of his people and community at large.

Through his charitable foundation, many indigent students of tertiary institutions had access to financial aid.

As the new Aseyin of Iseyin, Honourable Peller believes that Oba Oyebola’s educational background, exposure and experience will count positively as he takes on the revered traditional role.

Oba Oyebola, the 30th Aseyin, who had contested the throne with other eleven princes but emerged the chosen one, succeeded the late Aseyin, Oba Salaudeen Adekunle Ajinese I, who joined his ancestors in 2022 after reigning for almost sixteen years.

  • Why Malaysia Recognises Hamas, Unveiling it’s Impact on US Relation

Why Malaysia Recognises Hamas, Unveiling it’s Impact on US Relation

    Culled from NewsNav

Malaysia’s stance on the Israel-Hamas war has unexpectedly thrust the country into the midst of a politically charged situation.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has vowed to maintain ties with Hamas, even if the Malaysian government faces external pressure. Anwar has been one of the most vocal leaders in criticizing Israel, denouncing its military operations in Gaza as the “height of barbarism.”

While this has gained him popularity among the Muslim majority in Malaysia, it has put the country at odds with the US, its third-largest trading partner.

The Malaysian government has not explicitly stated that it is pro-Hamas, but it maintains ties with the group and reserves the right to engage with them in order to find solutions to the ongoing crisis with Israel.

Malaysia views Hamas as the legitimately elected leader of Gaza, despite the lack of elections in the enclave since 2006. Malaysia has long supported a two-state solution, which advocates for separate, independent nations for Israelis and Palestinians to share the Holy Land. In support of the Palestinians, Malaysia has taken various actions.

Political leaders have participated in pro-Palestinian rallies and discussed support for the Palestinian cause in Parliament. The Malaysian education ministry organized a Palestine Solidarity Week program in schools and colleges, and the government manages a Humanitarian Trust Fund for the People of Palestine.

Malaysia has also maintained reciprocal embassies with Palestinian authorities and has provided medical aid, food, and basic necessities to those affected by the war.

Malaysia’s relationship with Israel has been strained for decades. When Malaysia gained independence in 1957, Israel supported its admission into the UN and traded with the country.

However, Malaysia’s first prime minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, decided to eschew formal diplomatic ties with Israel to bolster the country’s Islamic image.

Malaysian passports now contain an inscription stating that they are valid for all countries except Israel, and Israeli passport holders face restrictions on entering Malaysia.

Religion plays a role in Malaysia’s stance, as the country’s foreign policy emphasizes the solidarity of the Muslim community.

Some political analysts suggest that Anwar’s support for Palestinians may be driven, in part, by a desire to strengthen his Islamic credentials.

Anwar has raised the Palestinian issue during his visits to Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, and the UAE, and has called for an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on the matter.

He has also emphasized that the war is a humanitarian crisis that affects both Muslim and Christian Palestinians.

Ordinary Malaysians have expressed support for the Palestinian cause through street protests and boycotting fast-food establishments perceived to have ties to Israel. Malaysia’s stance on the Israel-Hamas war has affected its relationship with the US, with Washington criticizing Malaysia for taking a hard line against Israel’s actions.

Nevertheless, Anwar continues to seek new US investment, indicating that policy differences have not halted economic pursuits. Among other Southeast Asian countries, Indonesia supports the Palestinian struggle for independence and does not have diplomatic ties with Israel. Singapore believes in a two-state solution for peace.

Thailand maintains neutrality, while the Philippines swiftly condemned Hamas and recognized Israel’s right to self-defense.

Both the Philippines and Thailand have significant numbers of migrant workers in Israel and Gaza, and some were reportedly among the hostages taken by Hamas.

In conclusion, Malaysia’s stance on the Israel-Hamas war revolves around maintaining ties with Hamas to find solutions to the ongoing crisis with Israel.

This position has gained popularity domestically but has strained Malaysia’s relationship with the US.

The country supports the Palestinians through various means and emphasizes the solidarity of the Muslim community in its foreign policy. Ordinary Malaysians have shown support through protests and boycotts.

Other Southeast Asian countries have varying positions on the conflict, ranging from support for the Palestinian struggle to neutrality and condemnation of Hamas. NewsNav / Flowerbudnews
