Women take sexy selfies to compete, climb social ladder: study

Women take sexy selfies to compete with other women and climb the social ladder in economically unequal environments, new research from an Australian university has found.

A study, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal, found women took sexy selfies in environments with greater economic inequality, rather than where they might be oppressed because of their gender.

The researchers analysed more than 68,000 sexualized self-portrait photographs, or “selfies,” posted on social media platforms Instagram and Twitter across 113 countries.

They also looked at where in the world the most selfies were taken.

The researchers found the association between sexy-selfie prevalence and income inequality was directly related, with greater sexualisation in environments where incomes are unequal and people are preoccupied with relative social standing.

“We found no association with gender oppression,” the study said.

“It’s all about how women are competing and why they’re competing,” said the study’s lead author, Khandis Blake from University of New South Wales.

She said women are “more likely to invest time and effort into posting sexy selfies online in places where economic inequality is rising, and not in places where men hold more societal power and gender inequality is rife.”

“Selfie” was the Oxford Dictionaries’ word of the year in 2013.

In recent years, especially since the advent of smartphones and social media platforms, the images have become a ubiquitous symbol of the perceived self-obsessiveness of the younger generation.

Researchers in the past have found women take more selfies than men.

The PNAS researchers said income inequality increases competitiveness and status anxiety amongst people at all levels of the social hierarchy, making them sensitive to where they sit on the social ladder and wanting them to do better than others.

“That income inequality is a big predictor of sexy selfies suggests that sexy selfies are a marker of social climbing among women that tracks economic incentives in the local environment,” Blake said.

“Rightly or wrongly, in today’s environment, looking sexy can generate large returns, economically, socially, and personally.”

The researchers found the same pattern of “income inequality” spending in other real world experiences in physical appearance-enhancing areas, like beauty salons and fashion.

“So, when a young woman adjusts her bikini provocatively with her phone at the ready, don’t think of her as vacuous or as a victim,” Blake said.

“Think of her as a strategic player in a complex social and evolutionary game. She’s out to maximize her lot in life, just like everyone.”(dpa/NAN)

  • Healthy diet promotes healthy cellular aging in women – Study

Healthy diet promotes healthy cellular aging in women – Study

Having a diet that is rich in fruit, vegetable and whole grain and low in added sugar, sodium and processed meat could help promote healthy cellular aging in women, a study of the University of Michigan (UM) showed.

UM researchers used telomere length to measure cellular aging in the study.

Age is the strongest predictor of telomere length: telomeres shorten in length during each cell cycle.

They examined the diets of a nationally representative sample of nearly 5,000 healthy adults and how well they scored on four evidence-based diet quality indices, including the Mediterranean diet, the DASH diet and two commonly used measures of diet quality developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

For women, higher scores on each of the indices were significantly associated with longer telomere length.

“We were surprised that the findings were consistent regardless of the diet quality index we used,” said lead author Cindy Leung, assistant professor of nutritional sciences at UM School of Public Health.

All four diets emphasize eating plenty of fruit, vegetable, whole grain and plant-based protein and limiting consumption of sugar, sodium and red and processed meat.

“Overall, the findings suggest that following these guidelines is associated with longer telomere length and reduces the risk of major chronic disease.”

“The commonality to all of the healthy diet patterns is that they are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory diets.

“They create a biochemical environment favorable to telomeres,” said Co-author Elissa Epel, professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco.

In men, the findings were in the same direction, but not statistically significant.

“We have seen some gender differences in previous nutrition and telomere studies,” Leung said.

Men tended to have lower diet quality scores than women. Men also had higher intakes of sugary beverages and processed meats, both of which have been associated with shorter telomeres in prior studies.

Nevertheless, recent studies have shown that telomeres can also be shortened due to behavioral, environmental and psychological factors.

Shorter telomeres have been associated with an increased risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.

“The key takeaway is that following a healthy diet can help us maintain healthy cells and avoid certain chronic diseases,” said Leung.

“Emphasis should be placed on improving the overall quality of your diet rather than emphasizing individual foods or nutrients.”

The study has been published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.(Xinhua/NAN)

  • Court postpones judgment in Reuters journalists case due to judge’s ill health

Court postpones judgment in Reuters journalists case due to judge’s ill health

Scores of reporters and diplomats had gathered at the Yangon court to hear the verdict on journalists Wa Lone, 32, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 28, the culmination of eight months of hearings in a landmark case that has come to be seen as a test of progress towards democracy in the Southeast Asian country.

“We are disappointed not to have received the judge’s decision today,” Reuters said in a statement.

“Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo have already spent more than eight months in prison based on allegations of a crime they did not commit.

“We look forward to the receiving the verdict next week, when we very much hope that they will be acquitted and reunited with their families.”

The climax of the case comes amid building pressure on the administration of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi over a security crackdown in the western state of Rakhine that was sparked by militant attacks in August 2017.

Later on Monday a UN mandated fact-finding mission will release a report on the crackdown, which triggered the exodus of more than 700,000 stateless Muslim Rohingya, according to UN agencies.

Most are now living in refugee camps in neighboring Bangladesh.

On Tuesday, the UN Security Council will hold a briefing on Myanmar in New York.

Monday’s court proceedings lasted just a few minutes, long enough for a judge standing in for Judge Ye Lwin, who has overseen the case against the Reuters journalists, to announce that a ruling would be made.

“The judge is in poor health, so I am here to announce that the verdict is postponed to the third,” said Judge Khin Maung Maung.

Defence lawyer Khin Maung Zaw told reporters that the stand-in judge had said the verdict was ready but it had to be pronounced by the judge assigned to the case.

Wa Lone smiled broadly and made a thumbs-up sign with his hands in cuffs as he walked into the court, with Kyaw Soe Oo just behind him.

“We are not afraid or shaken. The truth is on our side. Whatever the situation is, we will not be shaken.

`They cannot make us weak,” Wa Lone told reporters after the brief hearing.

Several journalists who came to cover the verdict wore T-shirts that read “Free Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo” and “Journalism is not a crime.”

The Reuters reporters are accused of breaching the colonial-era Official Secrets Act, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison, by collecting documents relating to the country’s security forces.

They told the court during their trial that two police officials handed them papers at a north Yangon restaurant moments before other officers arrested them last December.

One police witness testified the restaurant meeting was a set-up to entrap the journalists to block or punish them for their reporting of a mass killing of Rohingya and other abuses involving soldiers and police in Inn Din, a village in Rakhine.

The UN has called the military’s campaign in northern Rakhine a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing”.

Myanmar has denied allegations of killings, rapes and arson made by refugees against its security forces, saying it conducted a legitimate counterinsurgency operation against Muslim militants.

But the military acknowledged the killing of the 10 Rohingya men and boys at Inn Din after arresting the Reuters reporters.

In April the military said seven soldiers had been sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labor for their part in the killings. (Reuters/NAN)

  • Acting President Osinbajo has not endorsed Pinnick-led NFF faction, Dalung insists

The Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, on Thursday in Abuja said Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has not endorsed the Amaju Pinnick-led faction of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)

Dalung, in a statement released by Nneka Ikem-Anibeze, his Special Assistant on Media, said media reports to that effect were incorrect.

The reports had claimed that Osinbajo’s endorsement was in view of the threat by world football governing body FIFA to ban Nigeria indefinitely from its activities by Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FIFA had on Tuesday said it would take drastic measures if Pinnick was not given control of the federation.

“The reports are hallucinatory and invented. Though I he met with the Acting President after the FEC meeting, but it had absolutely nothing to do with the NFF impasse or football matters at all.

“A purported ‘breaking news’ being circulated by one Daniel Ator, a `Government House correspondent’ is totally false and a  figment of an imaginary Government House correspondent,’’ the minister said.

He said the journalist said to have circulated the report was even non-existent.

“First of all, there is no correspondent in the Government House Chapel called Daniel Ator. Which media organisation does he work for?

“At no time did Acting President Osinbajo affirm government’s position on the NFF, nor did President Muhammadu Buhari write any letter to the Attorney-General of the Federation directing otherwise.

“It is a planted story and a fake news. There was no directive  from the Acting President countering the court order,’’ Dalung said.

He however said the issue was still being handled by the Committee of NFF Elders Stakeholders.

The minister said he was hopeful that the parties in the crisis would be able to come to an amicable resolution of the issue. “Nevertheless, the status quo remains’’.

He insisted that the report represented the desperation of interests, reflected in trying to counter a Supreme Court Order, and was grossly misguided.

“This is not about a faction of an NFF leadership. It is an issue of the decision of the Nigerian court against an International statute. The truth cannot be overturned,’’ Dalung added. (NAN)

  • Abike Dabiri-Erewa urges Nigerians in Diaspora to shun vices, obey host countries’ laws

Nigerians in the Diaspora have been advised to be responsible residents in their host countries by shunning all vices that contravene their laws.

Hon. Abike Dabiri – Erewa, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Relations and Diaspora Affairs gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

It was at the sidelines of a lecture organised by the Lagos State University (LASU) tagged: “An afternoon with Baroness Lynda Chalker,’’ held late on Wednesday in Lagos.

The theme of the lecture was: Africa in a Competitive World, Development and Business.

Dabiri-Erewa said that it was important for Nigerians to maintain peaceful coexistence with their host countries because there was little the Federal Government could do when its citizens get into trouble overseas.

“A lot of Nigerians have been caught in Benin Republic for cybercrimes because the country is now enforcing its cybercrime law.

“About seven Nigerians had been charged to court for cybercrimes, so we are warning Nigerians abroad to be careful and abide by the law of their host countries.

“This is because when you get into trouble with your home countries, there is really nothing the Nigerian Government can do,’’ she said.

The Senior Special adviser also urged Nigerian youths to avoid desperation of travelling abroad, especially, through illegal means because, “It is also not always green outside there’’.

She advised them to join hands with the Federal Government to develop Nigeria.

According to her, the stress of migrating abroad does not really worth it, as what appears to be hard in Nigeria is harder over there.

“For those pretending to be studying abroad, the law will soon catch up with you,” she said.

Dabiri-Erewa promised that the Federal Government would continue to partner agencies and the European Union (EU) to sensitise Nigerians to the dangers inherent in migrating abroad illegally.

She also said that the government would encourage and invest in more entrepreneurship programmes that would empower its citizens and make the country more attractive to both local and foreign investors.

Earlier at the lecture; Dabiri-Erewa, who was the chairman of the event, said all hands should be on deck to fight corruption in the country.

She said that it was when corruption had been curbed in the country that it could record significant achievements in all spheres of human endeavours.

The Special Adviser urged Nigerians both at home and in the Diaspora to support President Muhammadu Buhari’s–led administration in its fight against corruption so as to build the country of their dream. (NAN)

  • Spain beat Nigeria 2-1 to advance to first-ever semi-finals

Spain booked their spot in the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in France on Thursday after a 2-1 defeat of Nigeria’s Falconets.

First half goals from Aitana Bonmati and Patri Guijarro gave Spain victory in the quarter-final match.

On an overcast afternoon at the Stade Guy-Piriou in Concarneau, it was Spain that made their early advantage count by breaking the deadlock before the quarter-hour mark through captain Bonmati.

Her fine left-footed shot from the edge of the Nigeria box gave goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie little chance of preventing them falling behind.

Bonmati nearly had a second with a free-kick that struck the underside of the Nigerian crossbar and bounced away to safety, while Eva Navarro forced a point-blank save from Nnadozie moments later.

Spain eventually doubled their lead before the break.

Guijarro scored her fifth goal of France 2018 after getting on the end of Maite Oroz’s free-kick into the West African side’s box and scoring from close range.

Having struggled to create much in the first half, the Super Falconets responded with a goal just before the hour mark.

Peace Efih’s forward run saw her pick out Rasheedat Ajibade on the left side.

Her low shot forced a diving Catalina Coll to direct the ball into the path of an unmarked Efih, who duly converted into an empty Spanish goal.

Though they halved their deficit, Nigeria were unable to find an equaliser, as Spain saw out the remainder of the contest to reach the last four of this competition.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the European side are reaching the semi-finals for the first time.(NAN)
