  • Nigeria export to Denmark rises by 157 % in 2018, says envoy

Nigeria export to Denmark rises by 157 % in 2018, says envoy

Denmark ambassador to Nigeria, Torben Gettermann, says Nigeria export to Denmark rose by 156.6 per cent within the first three months of 2018 in relation to the same period in 2017.

The outgoing ambassador told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that during the period the export from Nigeria to Denmark also rose from 173, 000 dollars to 1.1 million dollars.

Gettermann, who noted with concern that the trade volume was too small, said that he was in Nigeria to enhance the trade relations between his country and Nigeria.

“We have had a trade imbalance; we have imported so much from Nigeria than we have exported.

“At the height of it, it was basically twice as much or thrice as much from Nigeria than what we exported, because we were importing crude oil and this has gone down,” he said.

According to him, there was a significant drop in 2016 and even 2017, but it is going up again slightly in 2017 and it seems to be going up too in 2018.

“In the first three months of 2018, our import of goods from Nigeria worth Danish Krone (DKK) 1.1 million ($173,000).

“This represents a rise of 156.6 per cent in relation to the same time period in 2017 DKK 400,000 ($64,000),” the envoy said.

He explained that Denmark import from Nigeria totaled DKK 367 million ($57.2M) in 2017 which is a rise of 11.8 per cent relative to 2016.

“The commodity group with the highest import value to Denmark in 2017 was petroleum, petroleum products and related materials worth DKK 365.3 million ($57m).

“Our import of services from Nigeria totaled DKK 1.1 billion ($800 million) in 2016,” he said.

The envoy explained further that Nigeria was Denmark’s 74th largest export market (goods) in 2017.

He said that export of goods from Denmark to Nigeria worth DKK 573 million ($89.3M) in 2017, accounting for 0.09 per cent of total Danish goods exports.

He however said that goods exported to Nigeria fell by 4.3 per cent in 2017 in relation to 2016.

The envoy explained that in 2016 goods worth DKK 328 million ($45.2m) was exported to Nigeria while goods worth DKK 367 million ($58.9m) was exported to Nigeria in 2017.

“The commodity group with the highest export value in 2017 was dairy products and birds eggs worth DKK 151.1 million ($23.5m).

“Exports of services to Nigeria totaled DKK 684 million ($106.6m) in 2016.

“In the first three months of 2018, Danish exports of goods to Nigeria was worth DKK 167.6 million ($26.2m).

“This is a rise of 54.7 per cent relative to the same time period in 2017 of DKK 108.3 million ($16.9m),” he said.

Gettermann stressed that the trade volume was a bit low and has a lot to do with Danish companies not having much focus on Nigeria.

“We have to sell Nigeria to Denmark by telling the good stories; we have to tell them that it is possible to do it in Nigeria, to invest in Nigeria,” he said. (NAN)

The bandits had been terrorising innocent rural dwellers, razing down several villages and towns across the local government areas of Zamfara, and also kidnapping for ransom.

President Buhari, who expressed satisfaction with the way and manner the soldiers were carrying out their assignment, said that Nigerians deserved some peace.

‘‘Nigerians are looking up to you and us to secure the country. What is happening in the areas of operations is disgraceful.

“I’m very pleased with the way officers and men are firmly putting it down and I want you to be as ruthless as humanly possible. Nigerians deserve some peace.

“When we came into government, what we promised was security. The country has to be secured to be managed.’’

Secondly, on economy, he said that more than 60 per cent of the population of Nigeria was under 30 year and a lot of them do not have the opportunity to be educated to secure respective jobs and with high expectation.

  • Buhari charges Lawyers to improve integrity of nation’s judicial, electoral systems

President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to uphold and improve the sanctity and integrity of the nation’s judicial and electoral institutions to enhance democratic culture in the country.

The President gave the challenge while declaring open 2018 Annual Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Abuja on Sunday.

He also enjoined them to work for national cohesion and unity through their speeches, public positions and most importantly in their advocacy in court.

According to him, the call had become imperative as the nation  is gradually moving into another season of intense political activities preparatory to the 2019 general elections.

“As we gradually move into another season of intense political activities preparatory to the 2019 General Elections, I enjoin you to remember that by reason of your profession, you all have a responsibility to work for national cohesion and unity through your speeches and public positions and most importantly in your advocacy in court.

“In the context of opinions and narratives about our past and present political and socio-economic experience, you cannot afford to jettison rational and proper analysis of issues in a manner which builds, rather than destroys the nation.

President Buhari noted that the law can only be optimally practiced in a Nigeria that is safe, secure and prosperous.

The president, however, assured the lawyers of the resolve of his administration to promote measures that would achieve a vibrant economy under which the practice of law will thrive.

He said: “Through fiscal discipline, good housekeeping, we navigated the difficult days of economic transformation at the beginning of this government in 2015.

“We have now come to improving economic indices, including the consistent increase in our foreign reserves; thirteen straight months of decreasing inflation; the expansion of social safety nets programmes as well as the blockages of historical drain pipes in our national treasury, all within the context of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.

“It is equally significant to emphasize that our willingness to hold persons accountable for offences against society, through the judicial process, will equally transform the future of public service in Nigeria in a positive manner.’’

President Buhari, therefore, expressed the hope that lawyers could contribute to another core objective of enhancing the business environment and promoting social justice by promoting respect for the Rule of Law.

He also urged them to contribute to the law reform process and putting national interest and professional ethics above self in the conduct of their business.

“Rule of Law must be subject to the supremacy of the nation’s security and national interest.

“Our apex court has had cause to adopt a position on this issue in this regard and it is now a matter of judicial recognition that; where national security and public interest are threatened or there is a likelihood of their being threatened, the individual rights of those allegedly responsible must take second place, in favour of the greater good of society,’’ he added.

Buhari also expressed confidence that the NBA conference would achieve tremendous success, and urged the lawyers to participate actively in its various intellectual and social activities in order to build new bonds and strengthen old relationships.

The president used the opportunity to explain various measures taken by his administration to ensure prudent and accountable management of the nation’s scarce resources.

“Given the enormity of the challenges we inherited and the yearnings of a citizenry earnestly desirous of a new way of running national affairs, our first challenge was to transform our country speedily into a society where impunity in the management of national resources would be replaced with a culture of accountability and transparency.

“We needed to deploy our resources to address our common needs rather than the greed of a callous few.

“In order to achieve this, we have had to disrupt age-old assumptions and unsettle ancient norms in the management of our national patrimony, as you have all witnessed in the last three years,’’ he said.

He further said that the government had made appreciable progress in several sectors, including public awareness of the need to challenge the corrupt and the brazen in across the country.

According to him, the government has also learnt useful lessons on the dynamism of the society.

“However, elements within every society, including some lawyers, can equally become unduly resistant to change, even where it is proven that such change is to serve the interest of the larger society.

“At worst, corruption fights back,’’ he said.

The president congratulated the incoming national executive of the NBA, led by Mr. Paul Usoro, and wished them a successful tenure in the task of advancing legal practice in Nigeria. (NAN)

  • Uber Nigeria urges confirmation of its drivers before engagement

Uber Nigeria urges confirmation of its drivers before engagement

Uber Nigeria, a transportation network company, has advised the public to confirm the identity of its drivers and other taxi drivers before engaging their services.

Francesca Uriri, Head of Communications, Uber West Africa, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday that confirming the identity of the drivers was necessary to avoid contracting the services of people of questionable character.

She said not all those who claimed to be Uber drivers actually work with the company.

“It has come to the notice of the company that some drivers commit crime, claiming to be Uber drivers.

“There is a database where drivers on Uber app are listed and all drivers who claim to work with Uber can actually be verified from that database.

“Uber values the safety of riders and driver-partners before, during and after every trip;  this is why Uber continually improves their safety features worldwide.

“On the driver’s side, driver-partners and their vehicles are pre-screened before being enlisted, thereby empowering riders with the knowledge that they are being transported in quality and vetted vehicles by responsible drivers.

“ All drivers must undergo a screening process before they can use the Uber app as well as register with the required vehicle and personal documentation,’’ she said.

Uriri said Uber was committed to ensuring that riders are safe while on the road hence the need to put in place safety features.

She explained:“These safety features include Incident Response Team (IRT) which is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to respond immediately to any reported incident or accident globally.

“Uber also has a team of former law enforcement professionals who are working closely with the local Police to support any investigation.

“Also, GPS tracking of every trip, giving people the ability to be able to share their trip information in real-time with loved ones is available.

“ Share My Trip for Riders and Drivers, a safety feature which allows riders and drivers to share their whereabouts and trip status with friends and family is also a safety feature of Uber’s.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Uber transportation Network Company, which was founded in March 2009, has its headquarters in San Francisco, U.S.(NAN)

  • Ethiopia’s 2020 vote will be free, won’t be delayed by reforms – PM

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed if Ethiopia says
the 2020 election will be free and will not be delayed by his sweeping reforms to
the African nation’s politics, economy and diplomacy.

Ahmed, who took office in April, has pledged to open up the state-dominated economy and has taken steps
to end decades of hostility with neighbouring Eritrea — moves that could reshape the country
and the broader Horn of Africa region.

He said on Saturday at his first news conference that the World Bank would provide one billion dollars
in budget support in the next few months, explaining that “this is due to the reforms taking place
    in the country.”

Since winning office, Ahmed has loosened the grip of a state that had ruled with an iron fist.

He has ordered the release of political prisoners and decried abuses by security forces as state terrorism.

“My dream and ambition is for democratic elections to be held,” the 42-year-old prime minister said.

“Otherwise, what legitimacy can any official have without the mandate earned through elections?”

He said elections, due in 2020, should not be delayed until the reforms he has announced are completed.

He said the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) coalition’s focus i 2019
would be on “preparations for free elections to be held.”

Abiy has promised to give more room to opponents in a nation of 100 million where no opposition lawmakers
    sit in parliament.

He has lifted a state of emergency put in place after his predecessor resigned in February following three
years of protests in which hundreds were killed by security forces.

The World Bank and other donors suspended budgetary help following a vote in 2005 that was disputed
by the opposition and accompanied by violence that killed 200 people.

The ruling coalition, in power since ousting dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam in 1991, has long been accused
by the opposition of crushing dissent, a charge it had denied, though Ahmed has spoken frankly since
    taking office about past abuses.

Some political dissidents have voiced scepticism about change as long as Abiy’s EPRDF remains in power.

Protests that led to the resignation of his predecessor were partly driven by Ethiopia’s disillusioned
youth, suffering high levels of unemployment.

Although it has been one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, Ethiopia’s export sector – mainly
garment manufacturing and farming – has struggled, meaning the economy is not generating
enough dollars to pay for imports.

The dollar shortages have been exacerbated by the government’s massive investment in infrastructure
    over the last decade.

The government in July called on Ethiopians to bring their hard currency into banks to ease the shortage,
a move which closed the once yawning gap between the official and black market exchange rates for the
    birr currency.

On Saturday, Ahmed said “economic sabotage” had taken place and adding that “large groups” were still
hoarding foreign exchange, without giving details.

Though the government has pledged to partially privatise several key state-owned companies, including
the telecoms monopoly, the form liberalisation will take and the speed with which it will be carried
    out have not been announced.(Reuters/NAN)
