CSW: EEDC charges staff to raise benchmark to ensure optimal quality service

    By Flowerbudnews
Enugu: The management of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has charged its staff to raise the benchmark to ensure continuous optimal quality service delivery to its esteemed customers in the South-East.

The Managing Director of EEDC, Mr Praveen Chorghade, gave the charge while officially flagging off this year’s Customer Service Week (CSW) at the company’s corporate headquarters in Enugu on Wednesday.

According to Chorghade, I charge all staff of EEDC to raise their benchmark to newer levels and work as a team to deliver efficient and quality service to our customers.

This, he said, was the only way customer affection can be achieved.

He also emphasised on the importance of teamwork in every organization and the need for staff of the company to work together to deliver effective and quality service to customers.

“As we celebrate this year’s Customer Service Week, let us raise our benchmark to newer levels and support each other to make it happen,” the managing director stressed.

In his remarks, the Deputy Managing Director of EEDC, Dr Ernest Mupwaya, urged every member of staff to see themselves as customer service representatives.

Mupwaya advised EEDC staff to always be willing to attend to customers in distress, without seeing the responsibility as that of the Customer Service Officers.

He said: “We are all responsible to our customers, and our continued existence is dependent on how well we are able to serve them.

“We can only exist if we are able to achieve a revenue strength that is sustainable because if it ceases to exist, our service to the customers will not be achievable.”

The Head, EEDC Customer Service, Mrs Ijeoma Ogudebe, encouraged her colleagues to drive the theme of this year’s event, because without working as a team, “there is no way the organization can effectively delight her customers”.

“All our efforts are geared towards the customer, because they are the reason we are in operation,” Ogudebe said.

Highlights of the event included cutting of the Customer Service Week cake, breakfast with customers, outreach to select schools and customers. Some customers who visited the headquarters and offices were given a special treat.

It would be recalled that the Customers Service Week (CSW) is a global event celebrated annually by service-oriented organizations in the first week of October.

CSW provides them with an opportunity to celebrate their customers; while the theme for this year’s celebration is “Team Service”. (Flowerbudnews)

Israeli police arrest 5 for allegedly spitting on Christians

Tel Aviv:.  Five suspects have been arrested following video footage of ultra-orthodox Jews spitting on Christian pilgrims in Jerusalem’s Old City, police said.

On Tuesday, a video circulated on social media, showing ultra-Orthodox Jews, including children, encountering Christian pilgrims carrying a large wooden cross in an alleyway in the Old City.

Several of the Jews spat in the direction of the pilgrims as a sign of disgust.

The video sparked sharp criticism from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel’s chief rabbis.

“Israel is totally committed to safeguarding the sacred right of worship and pilgrimage to the holy sites of all faiths,’’ Netanyahu said.

Jerusalem Police Chief Doron Turgeman called the act “ugly’’, and said that no hostility would be tolerated against Christians, Muslims or Jews.

He said that a special task force would be set up with the aim of taking a stronger action against the issue.

Christians have recently suffered increased hostility, especially in Jerusalem.

At the beginning of the year, for example, a protestant cemetery was damaged by two Jewish teenagers.

Christians are minority in Israel, making up less than two per cent of the country’s 10 million citizens. (dpa/NAN) (www.nannews.ng) / Flowerbudnews

He expressed confidence in the prospects of the Workshop to deliver optimal benefits to every stakeholder, assuring that “this workshop will yield its desired purpose and communicate implementable solutions that will guide the EFCC in executing its new agenda in the fight against corruption and economic crimes”.

  • Vehicle chased by LASTMA kills pregnant woman, 2 children, tricyclist

Vehicle chased by LASTMA kills pregnant woman, 2 children, tricyclist

Tragedy struck, yesterday, in the Ago, Okota area of Isolo Local Government Area, LGA, of Lagos State, when a vehicle, chased by an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, ran into a tricycle, killing a pregnant woman, her two children and the tricycle operator.

However, the Police said only the pregnant woman and the tricyclist lost their lives.

Eyewitnesses alleged that one of the LASTMA officials at Okota roundabout flagged down the driver of a Toyota Sienna MPV (multipurpose vehicle), in an attempt to arrest him for violating traffic rules.

The official and a policeman attached to LASTMA were said to have entered the vehicle, with one of them attempting to take over the steering. A struggle ensued between the driver and the LASTMA official, while the vehicle was still in motion, as the former refused to allow the LASTMA to take over the steering.

In the process, the driver lost control and collided with the tricycle on Bayo Oyewale Street.

The tricyclist, who had his skull broken, died on the spot with the pregnant woman, while the children she was taking to school became unconscious.

    Protest

The incident sparked protests as an angry mob descended on the LASTMA official.

However, the timely intervention by a team of policemen from Ago Division saved the official from being lynched, as the police fired tear gas canisters to disperse the mob.

When arrived at the scene, an eye witness who simply identified himself as Friday, explained, “More than five LASTMA officials alongside a police officer were struggling with the driver. The car attempted to hit me but I dodged it. I was furious and even tried to throw a stone at the driver when I saw that the LASTMA officials were in a confrontation with him. Within minutes, I noticed that they had entered Bayo Oyewale Street, on Ago road.

The Sienna vehicle collided with the tricycle that was operating on the street, killing a pregnant woman and her two children.

The skull of the keke Marwa driver was on the ground. Angry bystanders began assaulting the policeman and LASTMA official who tried to flee.”

Another eye witness, whose shop is located opposite the accident scene, said, “I sent my brother downstairs to help me get something downstairs. He rushed back and informed me that there was a crowd at the bus stop where I had my shop. When I got there, I couldn’t comprehend what I saw.

“I was told that the Sienna driver was going the wrong way because the road was in a bad condition. In that area, when you reach a certain point, people tend to use one-way routes to bypass the bad road, particularly around Cele.

“The tricyclist was my customer. He visited my shop four days ago to make some withdrawals from my Point-of-Sale (POS) machine. He also informed me that he had a newborn baby and he was planning to pay the bride price for the mother of his child in two weeks. They were even discussing preparations for the child’s dedication, which was scheduled for a few days later, before their wedding.

Upon my arrival, I was shocked to see his lifeless body on the ground. I inquired about what had happened, they told me that the Sienna driver had entered the estate, and it was during the altercation with LASTMA that the Sienna collided with the tricycle.

Tragically, while the two children lost their lives instantly, the condition of the pregnant woman was critical. They rushed her to the hospital, but before reaching there, I received the news that she had also passed away. I’m not certain about the condition of the Sienna driver. Some said he died too while others said he is in a critical condition in the hospital he was rushed to.

The tragedy was sparked by the action of the LASTMA officials. It is baffling why they would chase someone, even when the person entered an estate. They dragged the man, wrestled with the steering right on the street”

Another eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Michael, attributed the bad portion on Okota road to reason motorists divert to the opposite road.

According to him, “There is a bad route around the roundabout, prompting people to take a one-way route to avoid the bad road. However, LASTMA officials have turned this into a source of income for themselves.

Whenever a driver takes that one-way route, they would stop him and demand money. That’s what happened today (yesterday). They stopped the Sienna but the driver refused to stop. The police officer with them today (yesterday) worked alongside LASTMA officials”

    Police, LASTMA react

When contacted, spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hudenyin, said only the pregnant woman and tricycle operator lost their lives in the incident.

On its part, LASTMA, in a statement by its Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, exonerated its official from culpability.

Rather, it explained that “Traffic Officer, Hassan Kehinde of Zone 27 Okota, who led the LASTMA patrol team disclosed that a driver of a blue Toyota Sienna bus with plate number AKD 944 HN, was apprehended for driving against traffic around Ago Palace.

Abuja:  Alhaji Muhammed Shehu, Chairman, Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), has tasked Nigerian on compliance with the payment of taxes to boost revenue generation in the country.

Shehu made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

He also urged Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) alongside private business owners to remit to the Federal Government coffers as and when due to avoid sanctions.

Shehu said that revenues generated from payment of taxes would be utilised for better services and infrastructural development in the country for the benefit of all citizens.

The chairman, who reiterated the need to enlarge the nation’s tax base, added that barely less than 40 million Nigerians pay taxes.

According to him, this is low for a country with high population.

” The Federal Government and tiers of the federation are concerned with how to make more revenue by blocking leakages,” he said.

While reflecting on Nigeria’s years of existence, Shehu said that the country’s 63rd Independence Day Anniversary was a significant milestone.

He added that it was time for Nigerians to look back on the progress made and the challenges confronting the nation since its independence.

“ Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on Oct. 1, 1960. Since then, the country has made significant strides in various aspects of development, including politics, economy, culture, and more.

“ It is a time to honour the sacrifices and contributions of those who fought for Nigeria’s independence and to appreciate the diverse cultures and traditions that make the country unique.

“ It is also an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to unity, peace, and progress as Nigeria continues its journey forward,” he said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng) /Flowerbudnews
