FG to commence payment of N25,000 grants to pensioners November

Federal Government has unveiled plans to commence the payment of N25,000 grants to members of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) captured in the expanded National Social Register of the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) scheme.

Minister For Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, disclosed this Wednesday when she met with the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC led by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero at Labour House, Abuja.

The Minister explained that the decision to include vulnerable pensioners in the CCT scheme was President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to labour leaders which he will deliver on.

Dr. Edu told the NLC that: “the President mentioned very clearly that vulnerable pensioners should be immediately captured on the National social Register and benefit from the Conditional Cash Transfer, as part of the national social safety net expansion and this was made clear in his speech on Independence Day where he committed N25,000 for 15 million households for three months.”

She appealed to the NLC to help fast-track the process of collating Data of would-be vulnerable pensioner beneficiaries so that they can start receiving CCT.

“I want us to fast-track this. If we can get this data and information within two weeks, we are sure that you will be beneficiaries immediately and you can start earning from next month which is November, that’s the main reason why I’m here,” Dr. Edu said.

She commended the NLC President Ajaero for being a team player, saying the task of moving Nigeria forward was a collective one and urged him to continue to have faith in the federal government under President Tinubu.

In his remarks, Comrade Joe Ajaero expressed delight at the various poverty alleviation schemes rolled out by the Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Ministry and the passion and commitment the minister has for the job!

He was however of the view that getting to the root cause of poverty would go a long way in addressing the problem.

“Let’s look at not only how to solve this problem, but the cause of it, if we continue to treat the effects of poverty the problem will persist. Let us look other social welfare interventions and job creation that will go a long way to support families.”

The NLC boss urged the federal government to create more jobs by creating a productive economy where factories are functioning and employing workers.

He thanked the Minister for being the first member of the federal executive council to visit the labour house in President Tinubu’s Administration, saying “For finding time to visit the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, we will work with you to achieve success in this process and your impact will be felt.

President of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Godwin Abumisi, thanked President Tinubu and the Minister for finding the retirees worthy of the federal government benefits.

He said Pensioners who received as low as between five and N10,000 a month, the N25,000 is big money for them.

He thanked the Minister for the exceptional performance so far urging her to keep up the speed

  • Nigerians May Submit Passport Applications Online From December – Minister

Nigerians May Submit Passport Applications Online From December – Minister

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, says reforms are underway to simplify the passport application process with the possibility of Nigerians being able to begin submitting online applications as early as December

Speaking on Channels Televion’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Tunji-Ojo stated that one of the reforms the ministry is implementing in passport management is to put an end to the “chaotic” passport application process.

“For me personally, I have said this to service providers; I said it today, I said it yesterday, and I have always told them, ‘You need to make life easy for people. We cannot, as a government, as a service, make things more difficult than they ought to be,’” he said.

“Part of the reforms that we are putting in place now, starting from December, is that even when you want to enrol for your passport, you fill your forms online, you do your payments online, and everything.”

The minister was responding to a question on international best practices for passport application and collection, compared to what obtains in Nigeria, and avenues to reduce Nigerians’ frustration in the application process.

In comparison to the passport application process abroad, the minister stated that only a biometric capture needs to be done in person, explaining that all necessary details can be submitted via a Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) portal.

“You do not need to go to the passport office to have your picture captured. People apply for American visas, people apply for UK visas, people apply all over the world. Your passport with the required specifications as directed by the NIS will be uploaded on the platform.

“You upload your passport online, you upload your supporting documents online, so when you go to the immigration office, you spend just like five minutes just to have your biometric captured; that’s all,” he said.

Tunji-Ojo stressed that the days of drawn-out enrollment procedures are long gone and unacceptable, adding that it is Nigerians’ right to experience a smooth procedure.

“The era of people sacrificing a whole day just because they want to go to a passport office for enrollment is over; it is unacceptable. You cannot inconvenience people based on their rights; it is the right of the people to have a seamless experience,” he said.

    Backlog Cleared

Earlier on Wednesday, the Minister announced that 204,322 international passports are now ready for collection out of the backlog of over 300,000 he met upon assumption of office.

Ojo made the disclosure during a press conference in Abuja, disclosing that only 99,901 had been collected out of the amount ready for collection.

Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to pick up their uncollected passports, revealing that the ministry was working with the immigration service and their vendors to ensure that from next year, international passports are delivered directly to the preferred address of Nigerians

  • FG to support local manufacturers with N75bn

FG to support local manufacturers with N75bn

Vice President Kashim Shettima says the federal government will support local manufacturers with N75 billion by March 2024 to strengthen the manufacturing sector.

Shettima said this while declaring open the second National Conference on non-oil export organised by the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) on Wednesday in Abuja.

Represented by Dr Jumoke Oduwole, Special Adviser on Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) and Investment, Shettima said N75 billion was earmarked to support 100,000 start-ups and Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) at single digit interest rates.

The two-day conference is with the theme, “Building a Sustainable National Economy Through Non-Oil Export.”

According to him, the federal government is also committed to providing necessary infrastructure that will support increased export of non-oil commodities.

“There can never be a better time to envision a conference of this nature than now; a time to reflect on non-oil export.

“Over the years, the nation’s major source had been 80 per cent dependent on oil revenue.

“It is clear that as a nation, we can’t afford to work on this uncharted path.

“Today, we find ourselves in protracted situation and challenges. All indications point to the fact that we have to prioritise our non-oil export.

“And this administration will give every support to boost non-oil export,” he said.

While pledging support towards made-in-Nigeria products, he assured of federal government’s commitment to provide infrastructure that would facilitate export trade.

We will prioritise capacity building for MSMEs, we will invest in human capital development.

“We need to work diligently to utilise opportunity provided by African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) by deepening our existing values and expanding our forex earnings,” he said.

Earlier, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite, expressed concern that Nigeria operated a mono-economy for long.

The minister, however, expressed joy that government’s diversification efforts were beginning to yield positive results.

Nigerian non-oil exports grew by almost 40 per cent in 2022, reaching 4.820 billion dollars.

“Semi-processed and manufactured products accounted for almost 37 per cent of these exports, surpassing agriculture’s 30 per cent.

“This is a big step in the right direction. We no longer have the luxury of business as usual when it comes to the business of making sure Nigeria succeeds.

“We can no longer afford to export raw materials cheaply and import finished products at premium prices.

“That train has stopped and will not be starting again. Our focus for exports is locally manufactured value added products that create both business and employment,” She said.

Dr Ezra Yakusak, the Chief Executive Officer of NEPC, said the Council had significantly increased the contribution of the non-oil sector to the Nigerian economy.

According to him, for first time, the performance of the non-oil export grew by 39.91 per cent in 2022 to 4.820 billion with about 214 different products exported, ranging from manufactured, semi-processed, solid minerals to raw agricultural products.

He said Nigerian products were exported to 122 countries, and appealed to the federal government to address the strange disease afflicting ginger farm in Kaduna State.

“I will not do justice to this address if I do not present the challenges being faced by farmers and exporters of ginger in Nigeria.

“It is a known fact that Nigeria’s ginger has been adjudged as the best in the world due its unique aroma, pungency and high oleorosin content.

This makes Nigeria one of the largest exporters of ginger in the world. However, the Council received several complaints of the outbreak of a strange disease ravaging ginger farms in Kaduna State.

“So far, about 2,503.9 hectares of farmland have been affected with an estimated loss of over N8 billion,” he said.

According to him, part from the huge financial and economic loss, the disease is affecting the income and livelihood of ginger farmers who are mostly operators of MSMEs.

“With the outbreak of the disease, Nigeria’s non-oil export performance may experience a steep decline, except the issue is adequately addressed.

“May I stress that this is not the time for us to accommodate any minute disruption in our foreign exchange inflow.

With the current state of the Naira, every single source of foreign exchange must be carefully and jealously protected.

“It is in this direction that I call on the federal government to declare the ginger fungi infestation as a crop pandemic and fight it with the same viciousness our nation fought covid-19 pandemic,” the NEPC boss said

  • No ransom paid for release of Benue kidnapped commissioner – Alia

No ransom paid for release of Benue kidnapped commissioner – Alia

    By Emmanuel Antswen

Makurdi,: Gov. Hyacinth Alia of Benue said no ransom or any monetary exchanges were involved in securing the release of his Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Mathew Abo.

This was contained in a statement on Thursday signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Sir Tersoo Kula and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi.

The governor stated that no ransom or monetary exchanges were involved in securing his safe release.

“We can confirm that the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Matthew Abo, has regained freedom. He has since reunited with his family in Sankera, Ukum Local Government Area where he was abducted.

“His release was as a result of intense pressure on the criminals from the gallant security operatives who were acting on the directives of Gov. Hyacinth Alia, who had earlier given marching orders to them to ensure Mr. Abo’s release,” he said.

The statement further disclosed that the kidnappers were still holding the former Chairman, Ukum LGA, Mr Washima Erukaa and his cousin who discreetly went to negotiate with them for the release of Mr Erukaa but were also kidnapped.

The former chairman was kidnapped at a different location and date.

Gov Alia, who welcomed back the commissioner, further warned criminals operating within the state to leave for good, insisting that they would not be tolerated in any form.

The governor commended the security operatives for ensuring the safe release of the commissioner and tasked them to ensure the safe release of the remaining captives.

He charged the security operatives to be ruthless on criminals and ensure that they have no room to operate in the state.

NAN reports that Mr Abo, who was kidnapped on Sept. 24, spent 10 days in captivity before regaining his freedom.

Gunmen came on four motorcycles about 8:00 p.m., ordered everyone in the house, including the commissioner’s wife and children, to lie face down and took him away to an unknown destination on one of the motorcycles. (NAN) www.nannews.ng Flowerbudnews

A health initiative organisation, HACEY, has donated health commodities worth millions of naira to the Oyo State government, to reduce malaria mortality in pregnant women in the area.

The organisation also presented a new data management system to the state, to reduce the waiting time in health facilities.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr Soji Adeyanju, who received the items on behalf of the Commissioner of Health in Oyo State, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, , thanked HACEY for the gesture.

Adeyanju promised to ensure judicious use of the equipment in the health facilities.

“We appreciate you, because HACEY is known for one thing, qualitative health impact delivery in Nigeria and of course in Africa.

“Let me also say that, the commodities given to us today will be used appropriately to ensure that our people benefit from this donation.

“I know when we strengthen the services at local government level, there will be less burden at the secondary and of course at the tertiary level,” Ajetunmobi said.

Also, the Executive Secretary, Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, Dr Muideen Olatunji promised that the items would not be wasted, but used for the purpose for which they have been donated.

“This intervention they are giving us at this point in time, is another way of strengthening the system that we are working towards achieving and the state will be better for it.

“I can assure HACEY On behalf of my team, that whatever you do will not be a waste, it will showcase what you’ve done.

“And, you can be able to beat your chest that you actually worked with a formidable team that is very resilient and industrious and it will give the best account of whatever you invested.

“So, I can assure you there will be results for the investment and it shall be better for it,” Olatunji stated.

Executive Director For HACEY, Rhoda Robinson, said that by contributing the health commodities to the state, it would promote access to affordable and quality health care services for rural communities.

“We are looking forward to expanding our reach and expanding the impact of this project to cover not just Ante Natal Care but other aspect of maternal health care and health care as a whole.

“This includes post natal care, immunisation and the likes and ensuring that we are also able to contribute improved quality and healthy care delivery within the state,” Robinson said.

The resource person, Emmanuel Oni, explained that the data management dashboard presented to the state, would strengthen data collection.

“, Basically, it allows health care workers to organise records and also store the records on electric system that is free from damage by natural hazard,” Oni said.(NAN)

  • Why I slumped during screening- Minister

Why I slumped during screening- Minister

The newly confirmed minister from Kaduna state, Abbas Balarabe, has given reasons why he slumped during his screening before the Senate.

The minister explained that he had suffered from exhaustion while preparing for his screening for a ministerial role.

The minister after he was resuscitated explained that he got the news of his nomination on Tuesday and had stayed up all night preparing for his ‘big day’.

Balarabe said, “It is basically exhaustion. I got the news of my nomination yesterday and I had to come from Kaduna.

There were so many things to do which I attended to throughout the night.

“What happened today is as a result of pure exhaustion.”

“I want to thank the Senate for their understanding particularly the senators from my State ( Kaduna) who have all gathered around me since yesterday and the medical team who took care of me.”

I am alright now, nothing is wrong with me. What I experienced was pure exhaustion which can happen to anybody,” he expressed.

Earlier in the Senate, chaos erupted when the nominee who replaced former Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai suddenly collapsed during his screening on Wednesday.

Balarabe, the second nominee to face screening after Dr. Ibrahim, had just concluded recounting his experiences when the incident unfolded, approximately 15 minutes into the Senate plenary.

While Kaduna South Senator, Sunday Katung, was discussing Balarabe’s administrative background in Kaduna, the nominee unexpectedly slumped while still at the podium.

Following the presentation of his profile to the senators, Balarabe received an endorsement from the Kaduna lawmaker, affirming that all three senators from the state, supported his nomination.

Senator Katung’s remarks were cut short when Senate President Godswill Akpabio urgently called out, “Bring water and sugar. Call Dr. Musa.”

Akpabio then directed journalists and cameramen to cease filming and exit the Senate chamber.

The nominee was subsequently taken to the National Assembly clinic.

After a break of about 45 minutes, the Senate reconvened and proceeded to confirm all three nominees.

  • FG sets two-week timeline for issuance of passport by Immigration

FG sets two-week timeline for issuance of passport by Immigration

The Federal Government has established a new two-week timeline for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to process and issue international passports to eligible applicants.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made this announcement on Wednesday in Abuja during a press briefing to update Nigerians on the state of passport backlogs in the country.

He stated that no Nigerian would have to wait for more than two weeks to get an international passport from now on.

    Abuja

Tunji-Ojo disclosed that the Federal Government was in the process of reviewing the visa and passport policies, emphasising that visa policies must be based on reciprocity. A committee has been set up to advise the government appropriately in this regard.

According to the Minister, the Nigeria Immigration Service has cleared all 204,332 passport application backlogs as of October 1, 2023, and has urged Nigerians to go and collect their passports without any additional charges.

Tunji-Ojo revealed that 91,281 passports have been collected so far out of the 204,332 backlogs that have been cleared by the Immigration Service.

While appealing to Nigerians to visit the passport offices to collect their documents, the Minister noted that NIS personnel had worked tirelessly and in shifts to ensure that passport backlogs were cleared within three weeks from the date he gave the service a marching order.

“No one will ever wait for two weeks to get passports again. If you apply and have been captured, you will get your passport within two weeks,” he assured.

The minister had set a two-week deadline for the NIS on September 7 to clear all passport application backlogs.

“The immigration service operated in three shifts to ensure that we cleared the backlogs and to ensure that never again in the history of Nigeria will we have a backlog. This is not a temporary relief but a permanent solution,” the minister stated.

He mentioned that NIS and its partners would upgrade their systems to improve their services, and applicants would not be required to go to passport offices for capture starting in December 2023.

He threatened to terminate the contract of the service provider if it fails to activate the contract agreement, including the Advanced Passenger Information Service aspect, which Tunji-Ojo said would help in profiling those coming into the country, enhancing border security.

He added that the Ministry had given the service provider up to January 2024 to ensure this came on board, especially now that the country is facing security challenges.

“The efficiency of the Immigration service will not be sacrificed for any other interest apart from the interest of Nigerians, and all the ministry contractors who fail to activate their contract agreements will be shown the way out.

“People will be able to upload their passport and supporting documents online. Only biometrics will be taken at the passport office.

“We are introducing passport front offices where people can go and process their passport close to where they reside. Solution providers have been given three months to activate this, or their contract will be revoked,” the minister said

The Minister mentioned another reform coming on board, passport tracking, where applicants, using their phones, should be able to track the processing of their passports from application to issuance date. He emphasized that these measures would help speed up the passport application process.

While urging Nigerians not to bribe any officials for passports, Tunji-Ojo stated that they should report such incidents to the Ministry of Interior via 08023753414 and aa_ajiboye@yahoo.com when asked for a bribe at any passport office within the country.

On the review of visa and passport policy, the Minister expressed discomfort with the visa-on-arrival policy, stating that this would be looked into.
