  • Probe religious crisis in FUNAAB -MURIC

    By Abdul Hassan

Abuja:   The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has tasked the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the religious crisis at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), to save it from total collapse.

Prof. Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director, MURIC stated this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

“FUNAAB has been engulfed in religious crisis for several months without any solution in sight. Whereas female Muslim undergraduates who use hijab or niqab in other universities all over the country have free access to their campuses, lecture rooms and examinations, FUNAAB has been a horse of a different colour.

“Female Muslim students in niqab are disallowed from entering the campus. They cannot attend lectures or write examinations.

The situation degenerated about two months ago when a female guest lecturer in niqab who was invited to an Islamic programme in the school was not allowed to enter.

”It led to a peaceful demonstration held by the Muslim students. There has been no solution, weeks after the demonstration and the condition of the female Muslim students remains the same.

“MURIC is deeply concerned with the plight of the Muslim girl-child in FUNAAB. We cannot fathom the rationale for the harsh treatment being meted out to female Muslim students whose only crime is that they have elected to shun material recklessness, immorality, indecent dressing and prostitution.

“We are equally at a loss to understand why FUNAAB under the watch of Prof. Olusola Babatunde Kehinde should be different among all other Nigerian universities. Female Muslim students who use niqab do so freely in other institutions,’’ Akintola said.

He added: “Female security personnel on those campuses carry out identification exercises on the veiled students whenever and wherever necessary and there have been no hitches. But the vice chancellor of FUNAAB has totally rejected the idea.

“It should be noted that many of the female students using niqab in other universities are performing excellently in their studies. One of them just graduated from the University of Lagos with first class. Another female Muslim, Balquis Bintilaye, who uses the veil was the best graduating student in an American university recently, thereby proving that their brains function normally even with their heads or faces being covered.

“MURIC invites the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, to save FUNAAB from total collapse by instituting a probe into the circumstances surrounding the religious crisis which began since November 2021.

“A federal university cannot claim to be unaware of the position of the law on religious freedom in this country. Section 38(i)&(ii) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees religious freedom for every Nigerian.’’

“As far back as 2009, the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the use of niqab as a fundamental human right.

“It should be noted that the current vice-chancellor, Prof. Olusola Kehinde was acting vice-chancellor from Nov.1 2022 to March 31. He became the substantive vice chancellor on April 1. It can therefore be adduced that he is not in any way alien to the role played by the university management in the crisis. Even the fact that the niqab imbroglio continues to fester during his tenure speaks volumes.

“It is our assumption that the vice chancellor may be nursing an incurable persecution complex, lack of the spirit of compromise, desertification of crisis management skill and a fixated determination to deny the Muslim girl-child of her right to education’’.

“Such rigid mien is alien to academic culture. Acute deficiency in leadership qualities and lack of damage control tactics on the part of the vice chancellor may also be at the bottom of his failure to rein in the religious brouhaha on time.

“We demand a powerful probe panel into the niqab saga. Female Muslim students who have been disallowed from writing examinations should be given the chance to rewrite the papers in the interest of justice and fairness.”(NAN) / Flowerbudnews

  • Remove HND/BSc Dichotomy or Scrap HND Programmes – Bugaje tells FG

Remove HND/BSc Dichotomy or Scrap HND Programmes – Bugaje tells FG

    By Funmilayo Adeyemi

Prof. Idris Bugaje, the Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), has urged the Federal Government to scrap the Higher National Diploma (HND) in the Polytechnics if the government would not remove the dichotomy between HND and BSc.
Bugaje disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on issues around its HND top-up programmes.
He noted that the discrimination against HND holders was uncalled for as it usually prevents the holders from attaining the highest directorate level in the public service.
According to him, the HND-BSc dichotomy is a colonial syndrome and it is unfortunate that Nigeria is yet to get out of this syndrome.
He added that the Board had written to convince the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Federal Ministry of Education to allow HND holders to go straight for two year Masters programme.
He said that the letter had however not seen the light of the day.
“Basically, what brought the top-up programme was the discrimination that we have endured over the past decades against HND holders, who for no fault of theirs ,shown nationalism by even coming to the Polytechnics to learn skills.
“HND is equivalent all over the world to a first degree, yet Nigerians are discriminating against HND holders, they are not allowed to reach the highest directorate level in the public service.
“Their progression is being attenuated over the years. When they want to convert, they are asked to step down to a lower level for no cause of theirs simply because they have not presented a BSc.
“So we felt, which is the way out and currently there has to be PGD, but PGD is not the best for HND holders because anytime they want to take employment in a University even after their Doctorate, they will still ask them to present their first degree,” he said.
The executive secretary explained that the Board copied foreign models to assist HND holders in attaining managerial positions.
He said that the first degree should not be used as the only yardstick for progression in academia adding that encouraging skills was a way to go if a country must grow and develop.
“So NBTE therefore looked at the best global practices, we have discovered what is happening in Ghana, South Africa, the European Union and Asia.
“What we discovered is the best option for Nigerian HND by taking the holders through a one-year top-up which will allow them to acquire BSc.
“By doing this, in theory, they have BSc and in practice they have HND and whenever you give them any assignment, they will perform more than anybody else.
“So that is the purpose to allow them to progress because all efforts to bring sanity to the system had failed. And I am of the opinion that if the federal government doesn’t want to remove this dichotomy, let the Federal Government scrap the HND as done in Ghana,” he added.
Bugaje suggested adopting the South African model in such a way that after the HND programme, the holder seeking academic career, can proceed to a one-year Bachelors top-up rather than the PGD before the Master’s degree.

BREAKING: Bandits kidnap Federal University Gusau students

A resident of Sabon-Gida, identified as Nazeer Sabon-Gida, told newsmen that the gunmen invaded the community around 3 a.m. and started shooting indiscriminately.

According to him, three students’ hostels were attacked, and the bandits took away all the students.

“They entered the town around 3 am and started shooting indiscriminately,” he said.

We have yet to confirm the number of students kidnapped because the bandits entered three hostels and kidnapped all the students there. It is difficult to ascertain their numbers now.”

Another eyewitness told news media ( Not Nigerian Tribune) that the bandits were engaged with troops of the Nigerian Army in a fierce gun battle, but that did not stop the bandits from escaping with the kidnapped victims.

They were seriously engaged with the army troops but the way these bandits operate, they will divide themselves into two, one group will move with the kidnapped victims while the other will stay behind to protect the first group,” he said.

“The first group had left with the students while the second group engaged the army in a gun duel.”

Some university students protested the surge of kidnappings in Sabon-Gida and Damba three months ago.

International Peace Day: NSCDC committed in pursuing peace in communities in Enugu – Commandant

The Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Enugu State, Mr Muhammed Dada, says the Corps is committed to pursuing peace in communities in the state through its specialised departments.

Dada said this on Thursday in Enugu during a press conference on the 2023 International Day of Peace celebration.

He revealed that the Corps departments of Crisis Management under which resides the Peace and Conflict Resolution Units enables peaceful resolution to problems and provides a viable option to unnecessary litigation within communities.

According to him, the Agro Rangers Unit also functions to help mediate between farmer and herders conflicts in all communities within Enugu State and the country in general.

The commandant noted that the NSCDC, being a grassroots paramilitary Agency, could operate in both peace-time and war-time and with a mandate to protect lives and property.

Dada said that the Corps was strategically positioned as a change agent to assist Nigeria, which is a member nation in the United Nations (UN) and the International Civil Defence Organization, to aggressively pursue the realisation of a peaceful world.

“This year the NSCDC Enugu State Command throws its weight in line the chairmanship of its Commandant General, Dr Ahmed Audi, who has demonstrated total commitment and dynamism in fostering a safer clime in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

“The NSCDC has also fully collaborated with the military and sister agencies on state-level, national-level and at the sub-regional-level too.

“These levels of collaborations have resulted in intelligence sharing and manpower support which has continued to yield dividends in the fight against criminality, banditry and insurgency both within and outside the country,” he said.

The commandant noted that it was clear that a fight against insurgency, extremism and terrorism is a fight against poverty and societal underdevelopment in all its facets.

“Besides, these hydra-headed monsters cause the education of our youths to be hampered resulting in low literacy levels and the consequent fallouts of this malady where the same youths become agents of destruction owing to brainwashing,” he said.

Dada lauded the NSCDC Commandant General for the vibrant pursuit of the Safe School Initiative having inaugurated a 21-Man Technical Advisory Committee to provide expert support at the National Safe School Response Centre (NSSRC).

He assured that the initiative is in full swing under the leadership of the NSCDC with support from sister agencies resulting in proactive and interventionist support to schools in areas prone to insurgency.

‘I’m sorry,’ Shaibu apologises to Gov Obaseki

After what looked like a protracted crisis, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, apologised to his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki, on Thursday and begged for forgiveness

He apologised after his investiture by Catholic Men Organisation Nigeria, CMN.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the investiture, Shaibu asked Obaseki to forgive and forget, just as he announced that he had relocated to his new office in accordance with the governor’s directive.

However, he added, there were still some work to be done in his new office located at 7 Osadebey Avenue.

Asked if he had resumed at his new office, Shaibu said: “We have resumed but there is still a lot of work to be done there.

“There is no problem about it. The governor has asked us to go there. Like I have always tried to prove, I am a loyal servant and nothing has changed.

“I took a personal vow to support my governor and you can see my Catholic people are here. When I took a vow with God, nothing can change it and I wish that the relationship that we had will come back in the next few days and weeks.

“I am missing my governor and by the grace of God, He will touch the governor’s heart and touch all of us and even those that are between us.

“I mean well. If there is any mistake I have made as human, it is not out of wickedness because I know I’m not wicked. I have a very clean heart.

I want to use this medium to appeal to Mr. Governor that if there is any thing I don’t know that I have done, please forgive me so that we can develop our state together.

My Governor, I’m sorry and I need us to work together
