Woman seeks divorce over husband’s foul temperament

A business woman, Halimat Yaya, approached an Agege Customary Court in Lagos on Wednesday to seek divorce, citing her husband’s foul temperament.

Halimat, 42, told the court that her husband, Ahmed Yaya had bad tempered and was also a violent man.

The mother of four, an indigene of Kogi State, whose marriage was contracted in 1995, said there was no more love between her and Ahmed.

“I have never enjoyed my marriage or had peace of mind because my husband is temperamental and finds fault in everything l do.

“He is hot tempered and beats me whenever he feels like. He does not take care of me not even when I fall sick. l am tired of the marriage.”

Halimat lamented that since she started living with Ahmed they had never understood each other and that the marriage was characterized by rancor.

She prayed the court to dissolve the marriage so that they would go their separate ways, saying that the man had made her life miserable.

“I want the court to separate us as I have moved out of his house since June 2017,’’ Halimat pleaded.

However, Ahmed, 48, denied the allegations made against him by his wife but said that he was ready for the termination of the marriage.

He noted, however, that he had showered love on Halimat and that each time they moved to a new apartment, he had always rented a new shop for her.

“My wife’s current shop is the third one I rented for her since we got married.

“I practically made my wife what she is today, maybe she has met someone she thinks is better and wealthier than I am that is why she wants the marriage dissolved.”

“We stay in a face-to-face house, so neighbours can testify. I don’t beat her, my wife no longer finds me worthy of being her husband and I take no offence to that,” Ahmed said.

The President of the court, Mrs Ibironke Elabor, however, advised the estranged couple to give peace a chance.

She adjourned the case until July 31 for judgment. (NAN)

  • Kerosene explosions: DPR takes awareness campaign to market, park in Calabar

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has taken its awareness campaign against kerosene explosion to Watt Market and Etim Edem Park in Calabar.

Mr Bassey Nkanga, the Operations Controller of DPR in Cross River, said on Wednesday that the awareness campaign became necessary due to the recorded cases of kerosene explosion in the state.

He said the explosions had claimed many lives and left others with severe burns.

Nkanga, while addressing residents at the market, advised them to always have a dedicated gallon for kerosene usage.

He also told residents not to patronise kerosene hawkers, but rather get the product from filling stations or licensed surface tank operators.

Nkanga frowned at a situation where kerosene hawkers adulterate the product with other substances to maximise profit.

“Our investigations reveal that some people do not know the right way to use kerosene and that is why we have decided to embark on this campaign.

“Today we are enlightening people on the safe usage of kerosene and the appropriate sources of getting the product.

“ People should always ensure their lantern or stove is cool before the introduction of kerosene.

“For safety, a gallon should be dedicated only for kerosene and not a gallon for both fuel and kerosene as this is very dangerous,” he said.

A trader, Mrs Regina Isong, lauded the sensitisation initiative of DPR, saying it was for public safety.

The operations controller had earlier held a meeting with surface tank operators and officials of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) where he read the riot act to them.

He warned the operators to register and obtain their operating licence.

Nkanga said that the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Department of State Service (DSS) had been mandated to arrest any dealer without a valid licence.

Mr Pius Nwuchola, Head of Operations of NSCDC in the state, said the corps had the mandate to tackle illegal dealings in petroleum products.

He said the meeting demonstrated the synergy between the NSCDC and DPR.

“We have resolved to swing into action immediately by going to the urban and remote areas where surface tanks are being operated to ascertain their operating licences,’’ he said. (NAN)

  • War against corruption can’t be won by EFCC alone – Magu

The Acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, has reiterated the determination of the commission to win the war against corruption , saying war against corruption cannot be won by EFCC alone.

Magu said this on the occasion of the Road Walk Against Corruption commemorating the African Anti-Corruption Day with the theme “Winning the fight against corruption” held in Gombe on Wednesday.

Represented by Johnson Babalola, the North-East Zonal Coordinator, EFCC, Magu said Nigeria had one of the most extensive and deeply entrenched culture of corruption on the African continent.

“The depth and gravity of corruption in our country is alarming.

“This is because our country has one of the most extensive and deeply entrenched culture of corruption on the African continent, if not universally.

“This is an indication that we are determined to win the corruption war, no matter how long it would take.

“The commission has traced and recovered illicit funds as well as properties worth billions of Dollars.

“This level of corruption is shocking, destructive and totally unacceptable,” he said.

He emphasised that the fight against corruption cannot be won by EFCC alone, urging all Nigerians, especially judges and judicial officers to support and cooperate with EFCC in the struggle to free Nigeria from corruption.

Also speaking Babalola, North-East Zonal Coordinator, said that 20 convictions were recorded from courts in his zone between January and July,

He commended the judiciary for supporting the commission’s fight against corruption, saying that the commission has secured 142 convictions from various courts between January and July across the country.

“Between January and July 2018 alone, the EFCC had secured 142 convictions amongst which are that of Jolly Nyame and Joshua Dariye the former governors of Plateau and Taraba states,” he said.(NAN)

  • Senator Rasaki, Rep member, Assembly Chief Whip dump PDP for APC at mega rally

Outgoing Ekiti state Governor Ayodele Fayose’s plan to instal his deputy, Professor Kolapo Olusola Eleka as his successor may have been dealt a big blow as several key members of his party switched support to the All Progressives Congress.

President Muhammadu Buhari received the defectors today at the grand finale of the governorship campaign of Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the All Progressives Congress, APC gubernatorial candidate in Saturday’s election. The mega rally took place at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium in Ado Ekiti.

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the two federal lawmakers were among the defectors, along with the chief whip of the state house of assembly. There were indications dropped by the new APC faithful, that many assembly members may also be getting ready to abandon the PDP, ahead of the crucial 14 July election.

Among the defectors was Sen. Fatimat Raji Rasaki, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District. She is the wife of a former military governor of Lagos. Mr. Olamide Oni, House of Representatives representing Efon/Ijero/Ekiti West Federal Constituency also dumped PDP.

Senator Rasaki represents the largest constituency in the state, the same area where Fayemi picked his running mate, an old political war-horse Chief Bisi Egbeyemi.

Political pundits said if the Ekiti central senatorial constituency vote for Fayemi, the election will be lost by the PDP candidate, Olusola Eleka.

The switching of allegiances by the PDP legislators was one of the highlights of the today’s rally and it was seen as a big deal as the APC national leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, telling Senator Rasaki repeatedly: ‘God Bless You’, ‘God Bless you’, when they met before President Buhari arrived.

The Chief Whip of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Sunday Akinniyi and the Commissioner for Justice and attorney-general under Fayose administration, Mr. Owoseni Ajayi also switched allegiances to APC at the event.

Ajayi was also Fayose’s attorney-general in his truncated first term, 2003-2006.

NAN reports that the National Chairman of APC, Mr. Adams Oshiomole, was also on hand to receive the defectors. He assured them of equal treatment in the party.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Senator Rasaki, said they had to dump the PDP because of the selfishness of Governor Fayose in the state.

According to her, the PDP in the state has been monopolised by a single individual, who would not allow justice and fairplay in the day-to day running of the affairs of the party.

Former Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye was the first to jump out of the Fayose PDP boat, after a controversial primary election, the outcome of which the lawyer-journalist said was predetermined in favour of Kolapo Olusola-Eleka.

  • No gang up can stop Buhari from winning 2019 presidential election — Ngige

No gang up can stop Buhari from winning 2019 presidential election — Ngige

Former Anambra governor and now Labour and Productivity Minister, Chris Ngige said on Tuesday in Ado Ekiti that no gang up would stop President Buhari’s re-election in 2019.

Ngige said that the gang up against the President by some leaders would fail ahead of next year election, noting that he has brought sanity to the Nigeria’s economy compared to what he met when he assumed office in 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the former Senator who spoke in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti state capital during the grand finale mega rally of the All Progressives Congress, described the parties forming alliance against the president as “mushroom”.

He said the APC, which first evolved as Action Congress and later Action Congress of Nigeria before its current name of APC, had remained a progressive party with the vision and mission of uplifting the lives of Nigerians.

The former governor said the people of Ekiti should vote wisely by electing Dr. Kayode Fayemi of APC on Saturday, so as to be part of progressives.

According to him, parties gathering to unseat Buhari are just wasting their time as nothing will stop President Buhari from winning 2019 Presidential election.

“All the gang up against the President will fail and he is going to win with landslide victory. It is obvious that before now, there was strong opposition against President Buhari by same past Nigerian leaders, but their plan to stop him then failed.

“I can equally assure you that their gang up now will still fail because those who say Buhari should not run in 2019 are afraid that they may be forced to cough out the public fund they embezzled through dubious means, “he said.

He accused Governor Ayo Fayose of impoverishing the people of Ekiti state, especially the Igbo traders by his refusal to pay backlog of salaries.

He noted that the non-payment of salaries was fast destroying the businesses of many Igbo people that are into trading in the state, saying a vote for Fayemi would address the current situation. (NAN)
