  • Mahama leads Commonwealth election observers for Zimbabwe elections

Mr John Mahama, former president of Ghana, will lead a Commonwealth group to observe Zimbabwe’s general elections on July 30, the Commonwealth Secretariat has announced.

The secretariat, in a statement by its Media Division, said Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, would deploy Mahama to lead other eminent persons from across the regions of Commonwealth.

Zimbabwe is not a member of the Commonwealth.

It withdrew from the organisation in 2003 after it was suspended for being in breach of the Harare Declaration, which sets out the Commonwealth’s core principles and values.

However, in May, President Emmerson Mnangagwa wrote to the Commonwealth’s Secretary-General, expressing an interest in re-joining the association and requesting the Commonwealth to observe its forthcoming elections.

The observation group’s report on the election would contribute to the Commonwealth Secretary-General’s informal assessment of whether Zimbabwe should be readmitted, the Secretariat said.

It quoted the Secretary-General as saying: “I am extremely pleased to be deploying a group to observe the elections.

“Its report on the electoral process will give member countries a clear view of adherence to Commonwealth values in Zimbabwe, including democracy and rule of law plus protection of human rights such as freedom of expression.

“Our heads of government have said twice, in 2009 and 2011 that they look forward to Zimbabwe’s return.

“I very much hope that the forthcoming election proves that the conditions are right’’.

Following the visit of a pre-election assessment team to the country in June, the Secretary-General has constituted a 24-member team of observers, led by Mahama.

The former Ghanaian president had previously led the Commonwealth teams observing elections in Sierra Leone and Kenya.

There are 23 presidential candidates in coming Zimbabwe’s election.

In accordance with Zimbabwe’s constitution, if no presidential candidate receives a clear majority in the election on July 30, a run-off vote will be held on Sept. 8.

The 270-seat House of Assembly is comprised of 210 members elected from constituencies and 60 women elected by proportional representation.

Commonwealth observers would assess factors affecting the credibility of the electoral process as a whole, the secretariat said.

They would consider the pre-electoral environment, voting process, counting and tabulation procedures and the announcement of results.

“The group is independent and will determine, in its own judgement, whether the elections have been conducted according to the standards of Zimbabwe’s election-related legislation as well as relevant regional, Commonwealth and international commitments.

“Observers will act impartially and will adhere to the standards of the International Declaration of Principles for Election Observation, to which the Commonwealth is a signatory,’’ the Commonwealth Secretariat said.

The Group would submit its report to the Secretary-General, who would send it to the Government of Zimbabwe, its Electoral Commission, political parties and all Commonwealth governments.

The report would then be made public.

The Observer Group would arrive in Zimbabwe on July 23 and would be supported by a nine-member staff team from the Commonwealth Secretariat, led by Katalaina Sapolu, Director of the Governance and Peace Directorate. (NAN)

“Let us congratulate the new members of the Police Service Commission and at the same time commend the quality of the candidates that have been nominated and brought forward by Mr President.

“We wish all the members the best of luck. They have a lot of expectation from Nigerians and before this nomination that is why we fast-tracked the screening.

“A lot of people are expecting that with their experience to support the police in carrying out the necessary reform that is required, particularly in ensuring that we drive a merit-orientated police force and performance-driven, that would motivate all the necessary members to do the right thing to provide us security.

“Let us at the same time also ensure that they look into the areas of rewarding performance in being able to compensate those who have worked hard.

Meanwhile, President Buhari has requested the Upper Chamber’s approval of Mr Muiz Banire as Chairman, Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and Bello Tukur as Chairman, Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).

  • Treat patients with respect, NHIS urges health workers

National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) on Tuesday urged health workers to treat patients with respect and dignity for easy access to health delivery.

The Executive Director of NHIS, Prof. Usman Yusuf, made the appeal in an interview with journalists shortly after 42nd Annual General and Scientific Meeting organised by West African College of Physicians WACP, Nigeria chapter in Kaduna.

According to him, NHIS has done a lot of sacrifice to the country because of the funding it gives to hospitals.

He said that the scheme had improved access to many patients across the country and increased funding to hospitals, stressing that hospitals should, therefore, treat patients with respect and dignity as stipulated by the ethics of the medical profession.

The National Chairman of  WACP, Dr Abel Nze-Onunu, said “Nigeria is a country with a lot of resources both human and material, but yet to get it right in the health sector.”

He added that the meeting was about examining the problems and challenges of the health sector in a scientific manner.

Rating maternal and infant mortality rate, he said “we have done several studies in these two areas. These areas are one of the indices we used for human development in the world.

“Nigeria performed extremely low in these areas and one of the key reason for this conference and we are going to discuss about this extensively.”

  • Pakistan Fashion round-up: Maya Ali turns up the heat at ‘Teefa in Trouble’ promotions

Pakistan Fashion round-up: Maya Ali turns up the heat at ‘Teefa in Trouble’ promotions

    KARACHI:

It won’t be long now before Ali Zafar and Maya Ali make their big screen debuts with Teefa In Trouble, slated to release on July 20. Needless to say, the cast and crew is elbows deep with promoting the upcoming action-comedy but it’s Maya who’s already been stealing the show with her impeccable outfits this week.

The actor has been revealing one gorgeous outfit after another. Here’s a closer look at some of Maya’s best looks from the promotion.

    PHOTO: INSTAGRAM/ MAYA ALI

Clearly Maya’s stylist Ania Fawad was thinking out of the box for here as not many would pair a white button down shirt with this oh-so-elegant skirt. But that’s the beauty of staple clothing items such as this top.

The Mann Mayal star looked so effortlessly chic clad in this H&M skirt and Uniqlo top. The net skirt is to die for, with its pastel-coloured floral embroidery and slightly shorter lining, which brings in a touch of sensuality.

    PHOTO: INSTAGRAM/ ANIA FAWAD

Maya accessorised this with minimal jewellery, black angular sunnies and a Gucci belt which, to be honest, everyone and their mother has and so, was a let down for me.

My favourite part of this whole outfit though, was definitely her choice of footwear. The lime green heels with the black sling back detailing just elevates this ensemble and takes it to another level, even more so than the skirt did.

Now this was a rather daring outfit. As her take on colour blocking, the Diyar-e-Dil star rocked a baby blue illusion top with straight bright yellow pants.

It shouldn’t have worked but somehow it did. Maya adorned it with white Jimmy Choo’s and a simple watch, with wavy hair and bronzed makeup.

    PHOTO: INSTAGRAM/ MAYA ALI

The peek through detail in the top, although very welcome by me, could have been a little too much for some as this was an already pretty out-there outfit.

The fit of the trousers was immaculate and there’s not much I would personally change here, except maybe the colour of the top. Wouldn’t navy blue have complemented the yellow much better?

Last but not least is this stunner of an outfit – my personal favourite. There’s something so effortless about this look, with the contrasting colours entwined with the textures, simple accessories and bold makeup.

I’m pretty sure Maya made many heads turn garbed in this Ohaila Khan ensemble consisting a magenta ankle-length fringe skirt and black chiffon blouse.

    PHOTO: INSTAGRAM/ MAYA ALI

The barely there YSL sandals speak for themselves with that statement heel. And keeping the jewellery matching but to a minimum was certainly a good move. Maya’s makeup here was flawless with brown smokey eyes, rosy cheeks and a bold lip, tying in with the tones of the outfit.

Overall, Maya has definitely upped her style game this year. I’m looking forward to seeing her rocking more fun outfits in the future.

  • Nuclear material goes missing in Texas, but the govt remains mum

An instrument used to calibrate nuclear material which had  plutonium and cesium in the possession of federal experts went missing last year, authorities in San Antonio said.

According to a police report, the device and material was stolen from a car in city.

Spying case against US expert on Pakistan is falling apart, and following a pattern

The news broke after the Center of Public Integrity revealed that the highly sensitive material was to be retrieved from a research lab in San Antonio by two security experts of the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory.

Plutonium and cesium are both radioactive materials that be weaponised.

Notwithstanding, the amount of nuclear material that was lost is insufficient to pose a threat, authorities say.

The Department of Energy could not be reached to comment in this regard.

Police officer Carlos Ortiz who was at the scene of the crime said that the case was a typical “smash-and-grab” with no fingerprint left, surveillance recorded or witnesses available to help find the suspect.

There have been no additional reports related to the incident since.

Federal watchdogs have previously flagged troubles tracking lost nuclear material overseas.
