Edo political crisis self-inflicted – APC chieftain

    By Deborah Coker

A stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo, Mr Peter Esele, has decried the political crisis rocking the state chapter of the party, describing it as self- inflicted.

Esele made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Wednesday.

The APC governorship aspirant in the 2016 poll said that the differences were personal and selfish rather than ideological or issues-based.

“It is sad to see that the present disagreement in the party is all about ego and who gets what,” he said.

He advised the people of Edo to be vigilant and learn to ask questions in order to have an informed opinion rather than taking sides blindly.

Esele said: “People should ask if this disagreement in Edo is about healthcare, education or infrastructure for the people.

“I will be interested in seing politicians quarrel or disagree on issues that affect the common man and not issues of ego or playing to the gallery.

“Initially, they said Gov. Godwin Obaseki is the best thing to happen to Edo, now the same people who brought him are the ones saying he should go.

“I want to see disagreements among politicians being based on ideas.”

The former labour leader also called for speedy resolution of the crisis over the inauguration of the state House of Assembly for the progress and development of the state.

He opined that the court remained the best place to resolve the crisis that arose from the inauguration.

“If a matter suits you, you will interpret it in a way that everybody thinks it is a crime.

“Why don’t we ask ourselves these questions? The House was inaugurated based on a letter of proclamation transmitted to the Clerk of the House, so what is next?

“What we should ask ourselves is whether the inauguration was wrong.

“If it is wrong, we go to court and if the court then says that the act is illegal, then we start all over again,” Esele said.

He advised that every action in a democracy must be based on the rule of law.

“We can disagree and argue over issues. That is why we have the judiciary as the arbiter to interpret the law.

“I do not subscribe to the issue being taken to the National Assembly because the members there are all politicians and the issue of interest would come to play,” he said.

“PPP is a global trend and the results have been impressive in many nations around the world, it does not mean that such government is abandoning its responsibility to its people, rather it commitment to rapid infrastructural growth.

  • Microsoft to open retail store in central London

Microsoft To Open Retail Store In Central London

Microsoft will open a flagship shop in central London on Thursday in a move that aims to reconnect the software giant to its customers (both consumers and businesses).

The first physical retail store for Microsoft in the UK will be located on Oxford Circus (on Regent Street) and covers 21,932 square feet over three floors.

It will apparently be the only Microsoft retail outlet in Europe, and one of just three flagship locations globally, that are intended to give people a taste of the Microsoft experience.

According to CNN, the software giant will use the store to get closer to its customers, and visitors will be able to test Microsoft software and games (there is for example a gaming lounge for the Xbox), or get some tech support.

Corporate clients are catered for on a separate floor, and people can also try out mixed reality solutions.

“I’ve been working on this for several years because it’s all about location in retail,” Cindy Rose, Microsoft’s UK CEO was quoted by CNN as saying. “We wanted the best possible location on the planet.”

“Of course you can buy products here, but this is really about the experience we provide to our customers,” Rose reportedly said. “I think this is just the most prime piece of real estate you could possibly find,” she said.

Chris Capossela, Redmond’s chief marketing officer, reportedly said the new store is “unique” in showcasing the Microsoft “experience.”

“The Microsoft brand has become a lot more human, a lot more approachable than maybe the early days, when it was very hard tech,” Capossela said.

“Now we’re about gaming, now we’re about building the next great software application that might rule the world in 15 years,” he said.

Microsoft’s UK boss Cindy Rose also used the opportunity to highlight the Brexit issue, a subject that Microsoft has two main concerns about, namely the continued free flow of data, and legal protection for its staff.

Rose said she is concerned about the legal status of Microsoft staff being able to work legally in European countries, but she also said that she believes the United Kingdom will continue to prosper regardless of the political landscape.

  • 11,000 fuel-efficient stoves distributed to displaced families in Borno — FAO

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) says it has distributed 11, 000 fuel-efficient stoves to families displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency in Borno.

Patrina Pink, FAO’s Communication Officer, said in a statement in Maiduguri on Wednesday that the stoves were provided under the Norway supported Safe Access to Fuel and Energy (SAFE) programme.

Pink disclosed that 5,000 deserving families had so far benefited from the programme while additional 6,000 stoves would be distributed before the end of Dec.

She said that the programme was designed to address the energy needs of the displaced households; enhance protection and control deforestation, as well as checking violence against women and children.

She revealed that the organisation had established three production centers in Maiduguri, Jere and Konduga Local Government Areas of the state, adding that 100 artisans were trained in the making the stoves.

The FAO official said that the stove lessened the demand for firewood by about 65 per cent and drastically cut the amount of smoke produced, compared to traditional cooking methods.

According to her, the organisation is working in collaboration with the Borno State Ministry of Environment and International Centre for Energy, Environment and Development to facilitate successful implementation of the programme.

The statement further quoted, Suffyan Koroma, FAO’s Country Representative as saying: “We want to produce the stoves locally to boost the income generating potential of Borno’s talented local artisans, while meeting the urgent fuel and energy needs of at-risk households”. (NAN)

  • Sanctions against Saudi Arabia possible – France

Sanctions against Saudi Arabia possible – France

France doesn’t rule out any sanction against Saudi Arabia if its authorities
are found to have been involved in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi,
Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Wednesday.

France has called on Saudi Arabia to establish the truth about the case — having already changed its story
several times — identify those behind the killing and punish them.

“So long as those who are responsible and the circumstances around the killing are not made public,
released and evaluated, we will go on demanding the truth,” Le Drian told RTL radio.

“So far we don’t have it.”

“We’ll take the necessary measures against those who are responsible,” Le Drian said.

Le Drian added that France didn’t rule out any sanctions against Saudi Arabia, which is a large buyer of
French armaments, luxury products and many other exports.

The death of Khashoggi – a Washington Post columnist and a critic of Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed Salman – has sparked global outrage and pitched the world’s top oil exporter into a period of crisis.

Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2 and has not been seen since.

His body has not been found.

Saudi Arabia has admitted he was killed in what it described as a botched rendition attempt.

Western countries have grown increasingly critical of Saudi Arabia over the case, as well as Saudi’s
pursuit of its war in Yemen.

Germany has said it will stop arm sales to Riyadh.

Le Drian said Germany acted too early. “I think we must wait for the investigation to find the culprits,” he said.

He downplayed the importance of weapon sales to Saudi Arabia for the French economy, saying they represented only 7 percent of the France’s overall weapon exports.

“We are not dependent on Saudi Arabia on that matter,” he said.(Reuters/NAN)
