Goge Africa commends bank’s investment in tourism sector

    By Taiye Olayemi

Goge Africa, a tourism and cultural media brand, has commended Sterling Bank for supporting the tourism sector over the years.

Its Managing Director, Nneka Isaac-Moses, gave the commendation in a statement on Tuesday, in Lagos.

She said Sterling Bank invested N5 billion intervention fund for tourism practitioners in the 2020, during the lockdown, when the industry was at a crossroad.

Isaac-Moses described the intervention as a game-changer as provided support to numerous practitioners in the industry, while developing the growth and development of tourism in Nigeria.

She emphasised the significance of having a financial institution take the lead in advancing the discourse on tourism sector.

“Having a financial institution lead the discourse on tourism in Nigeria, is the new chapter for tourism success story in the most populous black nation.

“Cross-sectoral collaboration is essential for tourism and economic development in Nigeria.

“Sterling Bank entered the industry at a time when the tourism business was at the crossroads.

“The global impact of COVID-19, the general economic downturn, increasing travel costs within Africa, and specific challenges in Nigeria such as, lack of access to tourism spots, security concerns, inadequate infrastructure and enabling environment had demoralised industry practitioners, especially tour operators.

“Moreover, the government’s focus on oil has resulted in inadequate attention to tourism, leading corporates and financial institutions to view tourism in Nigeria as a non-viable venture,” she said.

Isaac-Moses noted that Sterling Bank’s intervention gave hope to tourism practitioners, encouraged more people to enter the tourism space and motivated tourism practitioners to structure their businesses to meet the requirements for accessing support from the bank.

She said other financial institutions began to take a closer look at tourism as a potential investment opportunity.

“When we launched Goge Africa in 1999, it was a significant challenge to capture the attention of corporate entities.

“Financial institutions, in particular, seemed uninterested in our endeavors. Therefore, we cannot overstate our excitement regarding the recent developments in our industry.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr Abubakar Suleiman, the esteemed Managing Director at Sterling Bank, for his visionary guidance.

“We appreciate his belief in the immense potential of tourism to bridge communities, celebrate diverse cultures, and drive sustainable economic growth,” she said. (NAN) (nannews.ng).

  • Lagos commences demolition of illegal structures in Lekki

Lagos commences demolition of illegal structures in Lekki

The Lagos State Government has commenced demolition of buildings erected on drainage channels in Lekki Phase 2, to correct the perennial flooding that has become a threat to residents whenever heavy downpour occurs in the community.

The multi-million naira buildings were removed by the government by the enforcement unit of the Ministry of The Environment and Water Resources following expirations of notices served to owners.

The exercise which was expected to have commenced on Monday, was actually carried out on Wednesday, along Mobil Road, Lekki Phase 2 after the one-week notice.

In a video trending online, the state government heavy bulldozer was seen pulling down a marked highrise building found to have contravened the Lagos state environmental law.

Recall that, the State Commissioner for The Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab had last weekend, during an on the spot assessment, on company of other senior government officials, ordered the demolition of all structures marked and served notices found contravening the relevant law of the state.

An unspecified number of multi-millions naira buildings were already marked for removal for various environmental offences, ranging from building on drainage channels, lack of approvals, among others.

Similarly, the state Government has declared enforcement of a zero tolerance on all forms of street trading in Ikoyi, Lekki and Victoria Island.

Wahab, who made this declaration on Tuesday, added that henceforth no form of hawking, street trading and display of wares on walkways and setbacks would be allowed in the listed areas

Wahab stated that the state environmental sanitation laws would be fully applied with mobile courts ready to dispense justice to all those who run foul of the law.

He stressed that the action was in line with the T.H.E.M.E.S. PLUS Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to promote a cleaner and greener Lagos, while ensuring total enforcement of the environmental sanitation laws and create a safer state for all.

The comissioner, while sounding a note of warning decried the prevalence of traders at bus-stops, roundabout as well as pedestrians bridges in the listed areas, defacing the aesthetics.

He mentioned that the actions of the traders and their customers not only obstruct free flow of traffic, aid crime but also contribute to indiscriminate littering which eventually end up blocking the drainage systems.

Wahab, noted that Lagos, a megacity that is developing into a smart city, had no place for street traders who not only constitute an eyesore to the aesthetics of the city and expose themselves to hazardous situations but also constituted a threat to the security of lives and property.

The latest enforcement drive against street traders in Ikoyi, Lekki and Victoria Island will be sustained to restore the original masterplan of the areas,” the commissioner vowed.

  • FG to partially commercialise dams under its 12 river basins – Minister

FG to partially commercialise dams under its 12 river basins – Minister

    By Aminu Garko

The Federal Government is set to partially commercialise  the dams under the nation’s 12 river basins to enable them to deliver  their mandates effectively.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev,  disclosed this while speaking to newsmen shortly after inspecting Tiga dam in Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State on Wednesday.
The minister said the commercialisation of the basins would enable them to generate increased revenues for the Federal Government.
He assured that the huge infrastructure available at the basins would guarantee a return on investments.
He explained that the exercise would  ensure  sustainable operations and management of their infrastructure.
” The basins have huge infrastructure like water supply schemes, dams and irrigation that require good funding to be able to keep them running and to provide dividends for Nigerians.
He said the aim of the visit was to assess the state of the dam and the challenges with a view of addressing them for optimal growth.
The minister explained that the main purpose of constructing the dam was for irrigation, flood control and energy generation.
The Federal Government is ever ready to partner commercial farmers to pave the way for massive production of assorted food crops in all-year farming system.
” We are ready to partner with commercial farmers, they come and register with us, and we will allow them to tap water from the dam for commercial farming which will help immensely in enhancing food production.”
He said one of the major challenges the dam was currently facing was illegal tapping of the water from the dam by farmers.
” Farmers are tapping water illegally from the canals and this will have negative impact, hence we are working towards calling the attention of the farmers so that they will register with the government and the water would be supplied to them.
“We will also update our data base for effective service delivery,” he said.
Earlier, the Managing Director of the Hadejia Jamma’are River Basin, Ma’Amun Dau Aliyu, explained that more than 3 million farmers were benefiting from the Tiga Dam while hundreds of others were syphoning the water illegally.
He said the basin had since commenced moves to mobilise all those operating illegally so that they would register.
Aliyu hinted that the dam, built  50 years ago, was constructed on 1.4 billion cubic water capacity, and was done on some five million combined Kano/Jigawa population then, but still not being fully utilised.
He said Tiga Dam had canals and small dams that linked up to Lake Chad through Kamadugu River Basin in Yobe State, adding that with the commercialisation of the dam, more economic inputs would be recorded.
