INEC seeks closer ties with media to curb fake news

    By Emmanuel Oloniruha

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for stronger collaboration with the media in the efforts to combat fake news.

The electoral body said on Tuesday in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, that the collaboration would also minimise misinformation and disinformation about the electoral process.

INEC made the call through the Chief Press Secretary to its Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, at a two-day capacity workshop for INEC Press Corps.

The workshop is focusing on “Ethics, Safety, Practices and Critical Issues Relating to the Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa governorship elections”.

Oyekanmi’s presentation was titled “Impact of fake news, misinformation and disinformation on election information: INEC’s experience”.

Oyekanmi said that misinformation and fake news were among the major challenges INEC faced while conducting the 2023 general elections.

He said that the trend was a threat to democracy and was not limited to the social media alone.

“Some conventional mediums also fell for the fake news or misinformation that emanated from the social media,” he recalled.

He also recalled how some citizens and social media influencers spread fake news regarding the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, collection of Permanent Voter Cards and recruitment of staff for INEC.

There were also some falsehood related to ethnicity and the elections, he added.

He said that many journalists also fell for such fake claims because of sentiments and individual prejudices.

“We had many situations where fake news got published without any form of verification. No questions asked about their authenticity,” he fumed.

He said that journalists had the responsibility to report facts without taking side on every matter, including election process.

“Facts are sacred. It is fundamentally important to present accurate and verifiable information.

“Journalists have a responsibility to report facts without distorting them to fit a particular narrative. The public relies on the media for truthful account of events,” he said.

Oyekanmi added that a strong collaboration between INEC and the media was critical for a proactive approach to curbing fake news, disinformation and misinformation.

He urged the media to be factual, objective, truthful and fair in their reports on electoral process.

“Conducting free, fair, credible and inclusive elections is a collective responsibility.

“INEC will continue to provide the media with access to the relevant information it requires,” he promised.

Hon Peller stated this while delivering his speech as a keynote speaker at the 2023 Mindshift Empowerment and Employment Initiative (MEEI)’s Turkey-Africa Entrepreneurship Conference held in Istanbul, Turkey.

Speaking on the topic, “The Power of Entrepreneurship, the Opportunities it holds and the remarkable potential that lies in the heart of Africa”.

“Nigeria’s entrepreneurs have continuously demonstrated incredible resilience and innovation, contributing to the country’s status as one of the Africa’s largest economies,” he said.

High Chief Ayedero also disclosed to the Turkish entrepreneurs that their Nigeria’s counterparts do not only foster job creation and wealth distribution but also actively contribute to solutions for the continent’s most pressing issues, which he said include healthcare, education, agriculture and technology.

“I am truly honored to stand before you today to discuss a topic of great significance – the power of entrepreneurship, the opportunities it holds, and the remarkable potential that lies in the heart of Africa, particularly in the vibrant and diverse nation of Nigeria.

“Before I delve into these matters, allow me to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the visionary individuals who have orchestrated this extraordinary event, bringing together aspiring entrepreneurs, thought leaders, and innovators from around the world. Your dedication to fostering ambitious spirit and collaboration is commendable, and I thank you for providing us with this invaluable platform.

“Now, let us delve into a topic that embodies the spirit of entrepreneurship, but also transcends borders and cultures. Turkey and Africa share a rich and complex history that dates back centuries, highlighting the enduring value of cultural exchange. Today, I want to focus on Nigeria, a remarkable country in Africa, as it represents the economic and cultural potential that exists across this dynamic continent.

“Nigeria, often referred to as the “Giant of Africa,” stands as a beacon of diversity, with over 250 ethnic groups and languages spoken. This diversity is not just cultural; it is economic and entrepreneurial. Nigeria’s entrepreneurs have demonstrated incredible resilience and innovation, contributing to its status as one of Africa’s largest economies. It is this vibrancy and creativity that we must harness and celebrate as we explore the power of entrepreneurship in taking responsibility for problem-solving.

“Within Nigeria, Oyo State stands out as a unique gem. Its diverse landscape and rich cultural heritage offer immense opportunities, particularly in agriculture and mineral resources. The fertile soil and favorable climate make Oyo State a potential agricultural hub, while its abundant mineral deposits are yet to be fully explored. This presents a promising prospect for entrepreneurs looking to invest in these sectors.

“But let us zoom in a bit further. Oke Ogun, a vast area within Oyo State, offers distinctive advantages for entrepreneurs. Its strategic location, vast land resources, and untapped agricultural potential make it fertile ground for agribusiness ventures. The commitment of the Oyo State government to infrastructure development further enhances its appeal as a business destination.

“In the spirit of recognizing leadership, I must mention and celebrate the Governor of Oyo State, Governor Oluwaseyi Makinde for his remarkable efforts in transforming the state’s landscape and fostering an environment conducive for business growth and development. His dedication to improving education, healthcare, Agriculture and infrastructure is truly commendable and sets a powerful example for other states in Nigeria and beyond.

“Today, I want to continue by celebrating the profound cultural connections between Turkey and Africa. These ties have evolved over centuries, reflecting a rich tapestry of shared traditions, values, and aspirations. Nigeria, often referred to as the “Giant of Africa,” stands as a testament to this cultural bridge. It is a nation that embodies resilience, diversity, and boundless potential. With a population of over 200 million people, Nigeria represents not just a market, but a vibrant ecosystem ripe for innovation and entrepreneurship.

“Entrepreneurship is not merely about creating businesses; it is about taking responsibility for problem-solving, innovation, and societal progress. Entrepreneurs, like all of you gathered here, are the change-makers who drive economic growth, create jobs, and address the challenges of our times.

“Entrepreneurs, by their very nature, are change-makers. They are driven by a vision, a passion, and a commitment to addressing the challenges our world faces. In a country like Nigeria, where access to basic services, education, and healthcare remains a concern, entrepreneurs have a unique opportunity to create sustainable solutions that can transform lives. But this responsibility extends beyond Nigeria’s borders.

“Entrepreneurship is not confined by geographic boundaries. It is about identifying opportunities and building bridges. In this regard, Nigeria stands as a gateway to a world of possibilities in trade, export, and investment. The Mindshift Empowerment and Employment Initiative (MEEI) has opened up new avenues for collaboration and growth. For Turkish entrepreneurs, this is a chance to engage with Nigeria’s growing market and, in turn, benefit from the vast resources and talent it offers.

“However, like any venture, foreign trade with Nigeria comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. On one hand, Nigeria’s youthful population and growing middle class present a substantial consumer base. The country boasts abundant natural resources, from oil and gas to agriculture, offering immense investment potential. But on the other hand, bureaucratic hurdles and infrastructure challenges can pose significant barriers to success.

“So, what are the solutions to the disadvantages of trading with Nigeria? Collaboration, innovation, and adaptability is key. Building strong partnerships with local businesses, leveraging technology to overcome logistical challenges, conducting thorough market research are essential steps to succeed in this dynamic market, getting the necessary licenses to ensure smooth trade and investment in Nigeria which would be provided by me and my team of foreign trade expert to help all foreign investors.

“In closing, let us remember that entrepreneurship is not just about seizing opportunities, but also about creating them. It is about turning challenges into steppingstones for growth and progress. As we embark on this entrepreneurial journey together, let us be inspired by the cultural ties between our nations, the potential of places like Oke Ogun, and the transformative power of entrepreneurship. Let us embrace the opportunities in trade, export, and investment, and let us work collectively to overcome the challenges and make a lasting impact on Nigeria and beyond.

“Thank you for your attention, and may this conference be a catalyst for innovative ideas, partnerships, and innovations that will shape the future of entrepreneurship in Nigeria, Africa, Turkey and the world.”

NAFDAC APPROVES USE OF GARDASIL VACCINE FOR CERVICAL CANCER

NAFDAC APPROVES USE OF GARDASIL VACCINE FOR CERVICAL CANCER

    Terseer Jackson

    17/10/2023.

The Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control- NAFDAC, Christianah Mojisola Adeyeye has agreed with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency’s – NPHCDA – decision to introduce the off-label use of quadrivalent Gardasil vaccine as a single dose to combat the incidence of cervical cancer in Nigeria from the last quarter of 2023.

In a statement to the press by the Director General, the support of this decision as data from immunogenicity trials, post-hoc analyses of efficacy trials, and post-licensure observational studies among females have demonstrated that a single dose of HPV vaccine is sufficient to elicit an immune response that provides similar protection as a multidose regimen against initial and persistent HPV infection.

Adeyeye informed that, the World Health Organization – WHO – Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization – SAGE – has recently updated its recommendations on HPV vaccination schedule and has advised that a single dose schedule can be used for girls aged 9-14 years and young women aged 15-20 years, instead of the previous two or three-dose schedules.

She rated the Disease Burden of Cervical Cancer as a Major public health problem in Africa, where it is the leading cause of cancer death among women. According to the World Health Organization, about 119,000 new cases and 81,000 deaths from cervical cancer occurred in Africa in 2020, accounting for 22.5% of the global burden.

She said in Nigeria, it is the most populous country in Africa, as one of the highest cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates in the continent, with an estimated 15,000 new cases and 10,000 deaths annually. She added that several factors contribute to the high disease burden of cervical cancer in Nigeria, such as low awareness, poor screening coverage, limited access to treatment, and high prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.

Human Papilloma Virus infection (HPV infection) is caused by a DNA virus belonging to the family Papillomaviridae. The virions are non-enveloped and contain a double-stranded DNA genome. HPV is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract and causes a range of conditions in men and women, including pre-cancerous lesions that may progress to cancer.

Adeyeye said the decision to deploy the off-label Gardasil as a single dose schedule is based on the scientific evidence that a single dose of Gardasil vaccine can provide solid protection against cervical cancer caused by human papillomaviruses (HPVs).

She mentioned that the benefits of the single dose Schedule include; Reducing the cost and logistical challenges of delivering multiple doses, especially in resource-limited settings, Increasing the coverage and equity of HPV vaccination, as more girls and women can access the vaccine , acelerating the elimination of cervical cancer as a public health problem, as part of the global strategy launched by WHO in 2020 and Global cost-effectiveness analysis suggests that vaccinating pre-adolescent girls is usually cost-effective for cervical cancer prevention, particularly in resource constrained settings where screening and other cervical cancer prevention and control measures often have limited coverage.

Gardasil is a vaccine that protects against human papillomavirus – HPV – , a common sexually transmitted infection that can cause cervical, vaginal, vulvar, and other cancers. Gardasil is recommended for girls and boys aged 11 to 12 years, but it can be given as early as 9 years or as late as 26 years. The vaccine is given as two or three doses, depending on the age of the person receiving it.

At 18 months post vaccination, the efficacy of a single dose of HPV vaccine against incident persistent high-risk (HPV16/18) infection was 97.5% (95% CI 82–100) for the nonvalent vaccine and 97.5% (95% CI 82–100) for the bivalent vaccine.

Gardasil has been granted registration approval by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control – NAFDAC – in exercising its mandate as stipulated by its enabling law, NAFDAC Act CapN1, LFN 2004 and after rigorous regulatory evaluation process for vaccines. The single dose has comparable efficacy and duration of protection as a 2-dose schedule and may offer programme advantages, is more efficient and affordable, and contribute to improved coverage

The DG concluded that in line with its mandate to protect Public Health, the agency is committed to ensuring the safety, quality and efficacy of the Gardasil vaccine, and will continue to monitor its impact and performance and this is an effective and sustainable interventions to prevent and control cervical cancer in Nigeria and other African countries.
