The crisis rocking the Rivers State House of Assembly is far from over as the police again took over the complex on Tuesday.

This came as members loyal to both factions allegedly held separate sittings at different locations.

Four police patrol vans were sighted at the entrance of the assembly complex, while the movement of people and vehicles along the Moscow Road Axis of the assembly were restricted.

Also, an Armoured Personnel Carrier was seen pacing from one end to the other on the road where the complex is located, while scores of armed operatives mounted strategic locations.

The reason for the security beef-up could not be immediately ascertained, but it was gathered that some lawmakers sat on Tuesday.

It was gathered that 25 lawmakers led by House Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, sat early on Tuesday.

The lawmakers reportedly deliberated on two items concerning the suspension of the strike by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria.

the other lawmakers led by factional Speaker, Edison Ehie, passed a vote of confidence on Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Rising from a sitting on Tuesday, they commended the governor on his developmental strides and security initiatives to keep the state peaceful.

Ehie, in a statement signed by Legislative Aide, Ken Uchendu, said it takes a man of vision to steer the ship of development for the benefit of the people of the State

The faction resolved to continuously give the governor the required support to accomplish his consolidation and continuity agenda to benefit the State.

The lawmaker also condemned the attack on Ehie’s residence on Sunday night as well as the burning of the House of Assembly.

The lawmakers appealed to the governor to commence the rehabilitation works as soon as possible.

“Furthermore, the house impressed on the need for the Inspector General of police, and other related security apparatus of the state to investigate these attacks and bring the culprits to book,” the statement read

  • Why we sued Action Alliance, national chairman– Aggrieved party members

Why we sued Action Alliance, national chairman– Aggrieved party members

Abuja: Some aggrieved members of the Action Alliance (AA), on Monday, disclosed real reasons they sued the party and its National Chairman, Dr Adekunle Omo-Aje, at a Federal High Court, Abuja.
The plaintiffs, who spoke through Ugochukwu Ogbuji, said to be the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of AA, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview that they opposed the recently conducted national convention of the party.

Ogbuji said the national convention ought not to have been conducted since the current tenure of the national executive committee (NEC).members was yet to expire.

“They went to Olusegun Obasanjo’s Library in Ogun State on October 7th, 2023 and do what they called selective election without the consent of the National Working Committee (NWC) and NEC of the party.

“There was no meeting that was held that the NWC took a decision that we should have a national convention,” he said.

He alleged that some of those who attended the convention were not members of AA.
Ogbuji insisted the convention was null and void.

On whether the aggrieved members explored internal mechanism of the party to resolve the matter before approaching court, he said they did not because Omo-Aje would not listen to advice.
He said their prayer was that the court should declare that their tenure had not ended and set aside the convention.

Besides, Ogbuji said before a person is qualified to be national chairman of AA, he or she must possess a minimum of SSCE certificate.
“We are now approaching the court that if such a person has the basic requirement, he should present it to the court.

“That is what makes him to be the national chairman,” he said.
When asked if the plaintiffs assumed Omo-Aje did not have SSCE qualification, he said: “We are not saying that. We are saying that the court should ask him to produce it.
“Let us know if he has it or not. For now, we have not seen it. Let him present it to the court.”
When asked further why the question of SSCE certificate was coming at this time since Omo-Aje had been presiding as AA chairman, Ogbuji said: “The answer is that my brother, you cannot continue this way; that is how it supposed to be.

“Because what we are trying to do is to try to defend the constitution of the party which is the primary thing.

“We are trying to put things in order on how it should be because the constitution of the party is supreme.”e

According to him, we are not witch hunting anybody but what we are trying to do is that the constitution of the party should be followed and obeyed and all the executives of the party should be allowed to carry out their functions without bias.
He listed some of the members who filed the case to include Esther Esevohare, national women leader; Deborah Banjo, national treasurer; Pastor Samuel Oboro, financial secretary; Dr Mike Madu, national youth leader; Chief Chinedu Ukadike, an ex-officio of south east; Sunday John-Bull, the ex-officio of south south, and Alhaji Isa Haladu.
NAN reports that in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1447/2023, the eight plaintiffs sued AA, Omo-Aje, Amb. Suleiman Abdulrasheed, Miller Orgwu, Prince Ademola Adekanbi, Prince Awolola Awofala, Alhaji Sanni Darma, Solomon Okhanigbuan, Hon Joshua Adewole as 1st to 9th defendants respectively.
Others include Alhaji Wasiu Adeyemo, Mrs Joke Adebayo, Jummai Umar, Ahmadu Gambo and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as 10th to 14th defendants respectively.
Responding, the AA National Chairman, Omo-Aje, disagreed with Ogbuji, insisting that the party held its elective national convention on Oct. 7 in compliance with the party’s constitutions and guidelines for the election.
Omo-Aje, who said that INEC officers monitored the convention, said the list of the new set of the national officers were forwarded to the commission.
According to him, all the due notices were given to appropriate authorities and members.
He said the convention was initially scheduled for Aug. 17 and INEC was duly notified but many members did not buy the forms to represent federal character spread and the convention had to be postponed.
He said on Aug. 27, a NEC meeting of the party was held and all the plaintiffs, except John-Bull and Haladu, were present and they made contributions and were part of the decisions taken.
Omo-Aje, who said that there was no selective convention contrary to insinuations, said new executives were elected and nobody was excluded from participating.
He clarified that the new executive would not perform the function of their office “until the tenure of the present executive expires and there is proper handing-over and swearing-in.”
Omo-Aje, who dispelled the rumour about his non-possession of SSCE certificate, said such allegation was laughable.
He said he completed his secondary school education at Olumayin High School, Mayin, in Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State with student exam number: 4313304/147 and that any interested person could go to the school to verify.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng) /Flowerbudnews

Alleged $9.6bn P&ID scam: Fleeing James Nolan opens defence, fails to call witness

    By Taiye Agbaje
Abuja,:   The British national, Mr James Nolan, who jumped bail in the alleged 9.6 billion dollars Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) Ltd scandal, on Monday, opened his defence in absentia without calling any witness.

Nolan’s counsel, Mr Michael Ajara, told Justice Donatus Okorowo of a Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja that he did not intend to call any witness upon resumed hearing in the matter.

Ajara told the court that after his evaluation of the evidence of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the prosecution in the matter, he would be relying on the case of the prosecution.

EFCC’s lawyer, Mr Bala Sanga, did not object and Justice Okorowo adjourned the matter until Feb. 15 for adoption of final written addresses.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the anti-graft agency is prosecuting Trinity Biotech Nigeria Limited and Nolan in the charged marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/272/2022 as 1st and 2nd defendants in the case.

Also, the commission is also prosecuting the sister case marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/273/2022 filed against Resorts Express Concept Nigeria Ltd, another company, and Corrado Fantoli as 1st and 2nd defendants respectively before Okorowo.
Fantoli, also a foreigner and an associate of Nolan, was one of the suspects behind the alleged $9.6 billion P&ID fraud.
The suspect, said to be at large, alongside the company, was arraigned in abtensia on November 25, 2022, on eight-count money laundering charge.

He was not present in court or represented by a lawyer when they were arraigned.

The court also declared him wanted and ordered for his arrest anywhere he is sighted after Sanga made application to the effect.

Fantoli and Giovanna Beccarelli, who had also been declared wanted and an arrest warrant issued against her, were said to be directors and signatories to the company’s Guaranty Trust Bank account number: 0123849451.

Resorts Express Concept Nigeria Ltd and Trinity Biotech Nigeria Limited are two of the over 30 companies associated with the $9.6 billion scam.

NAN reports that other cases linked to the scandal are currently before Justice Ahmed Mohammed, Justice Obiora Egwuatu, Justice Zainab Abubakar of FHC, Abuja, besides other charges at FCT High Courts.

A Business and Property Court in London presided over by Justice Robin Knowles of the Commercial Courts of England and Wales had, in October, quashed the 11 billion dollars awarded against Nigeria in a case filed by the P&ID.

Judge Knowles held that the award was obtained by fraud and that what had happened in the case was contrary to public policy.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)/ Flowerbudnews

  • Nigeria, others should learn from Liberia election – Ejime

Nigeria, others should learn from Liberia election – Ejime

A global political affairs analyst, Mr Paul Ejime says Nigeria and other African countries have a lot of lessons to learn from the just-concluded presidential election in Liberia.

The election was won by Joseph Boakai, a former Vice President of the country, who defeated incumbent President, George Weah, in a keenly contested run-off election on Nov. 14.

Boakai got 50.89 per cent of the vote having polled 712,741 votes with nearly 99.58 per cent of polling stations counted, according to results from the Nov. 14 election announced by the National Electoral Commission Chairperson, Mrs Davidetta Lansanah.

Weah got 696,520 votes, representing 49.11 per cent of the total votes.

Reacting to the election in a telephone interview with NAN on Sunday, Ejime, an international media and communication expert, rated the election as transparent.

He said that the electoral body displayed a level of trust by conducting a transparent and credible election.

According to him, there is a lesson to be learnt in transparency, confidence in government institutions and trust in the electoral umpire.

One of the key issues in Liberia during the first round of the election in October is that the voters did not wait for the results to be counted. They cast their votes and went back to their homes.

“It shows a level of trust. Election is supposed to be a process not an event. It requires an electoral umpire that can be trusted.

“When people can trust the electoral commission and the political agents can be the eyes and ears of the political parties, you know that democracy is growing,” he said.

Ejime described the election as a “multi-stakeholder enterprise” with separation of powers among the executive, legislature and the judiciary.

“We should have a judiciary that can dispense justice, a legislature that is independent of the executive and the judiciary.

“The people should not engage in vote buying and selling, ballot box coup and political coup, which give rise to military coup.

“The judiciary should understand that it is the last hope of the common man; if the executive and the legislature trample on the citizen, they run to the judiciary, if the judiciary is involved in truncating democracy, who will the people run to?

The military should learn that their job is in the protection of the nation’s territory and not to lead in political governance,” he said

  • Egypt, India abandoned Dollar completely

    Egypt, India abandoned Dollar completely

EssexEGYPT and India, in a strategic alignment with the BRICS bloc’s de-dollarization efforts, have initiated discussions to eliminate the US dollar from their trade relations.

This bold move is a part of a growing trend among BRICS nations to reduce dependence on the US dollar in international trade, and it signifies a significant shift in the global economic landscape.

Integrating New Strategies in Global Trade

The decision by Egypt and India to bypass the US dollar in their trading activities marks a crucial step in the BRICS bloc’s wider strategy. Egypt’s engagement in this initiative follows its invitation to join the BRICS bloc at its 2023 annual summit.

This inclusion is more than just a formal membership; it’s an entry into a collective effort to reshape how global trade is conducted.

By settling trade in local currencies, these nations are not just fostering stronger bilateral relations but are also challenging the traditional dominance of the US dollar in international commerce.

India’s role in this shift cannot be overstated. As one of the most vocal advocates for reducing reliance on the US dollar within the BRICS bloc, India has been at the forefront of these efforts.

The country’s push to abandon the US dollar in its trade relations with Ethiopia and the landmark oil deal settled in local currencies with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are testaments to its commitment to this cause.

A Ripple Effect Across Geopolitical Boundaries

The inclusion of six new countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Argentina, into the BRICS bloc, reflects a growing discontent with the current global financial system.

The bloc’s expansion and its concerted move towards de-dollarization are causing ripples across geopolitical boundaries, signaling a potential shift in the balance of economic power.

The discussions between Egypt’s Finance Minister, Mohamed Maait, and India’s Ambassador to Cairo, Ajit Gupte, are not just routine diplomatic exchanges.

They represent a concerted effort to devise strategies that would bolster investment and economic diversification between the two nations.

The talks also covered the use of Egypt’s substantial bond issuance in China for potential utilization in India’s financial markets, showcasing a complex web of financial maneuvers aimed at decreasing dependency on the US dollar.

This trend extends beyond just Egypt and India. The entire BRICS bloc has been vocal about its ambition to diminish the greenback’s role in international trade settlements throughout the year.

The adoption of local currencies in bilateral trade is not merely a financial strategy; it’s a political statement that challenges the traditional hegemony of the US dollar in global economics.

The move by Egypt and India to abandon the US dollar in their trade relations marks a bold step towards altering the dynamics of international trade.

As these countries, along with other members of the BRICS bloc, embrace local currencies for trade settlements, they are not only fortifying their economic alliances but also paving the way for a new era in global trade.

This shift could potentially reshape the global economic order, reducing the longstanding dominance of the US dollar and introducing a more multipolar financial world.

The Executive Secretary of ENS-PHCDA, Dr Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, disclosed this to newsmen on Monday at the end of UNICEF 2023 End-of-the-Year Review Consultation meeting held in Enugu.

Ani-Osheku said that the state had done very well in thematic critical areas that UNICEF covers on child, maternal, PHC, nutrition, supplement provisions and community health education levels.

“Enugu State is at the frontiers of what is happening today in the child, maternal and PHC space and I guess that is why Enugu State is selected to host this UNICEF critical review meeting for the year.

“We have done well in nutritional balance for children and using wide-spread nutritional education to increase the nutritional level of our children through UNICEF support.

“We have successfully carried out two bi-annual events of Maternal, New Born and Child Health Week in all PHC centres in the state.

“In the week, we focused on supplementing our pregnant women and nursing mothers to ensure they carry out pregnancy and feeding the infant in a healthy well with minimal or no cost to the family.

“We have significantly decreased the morbidity of children in the state through meticulous and timely immunization campaigns and implemented a sound nutrition plan and campaign through the assistant of UNICEF.

“The ENS-PHCDA has supplemented children with Vitamin A for development of eye sight and sharp brain as well as de-worming programme to ensure healthy development of children in the state,” she said.

According to her, we are grateful to UNICEF for supporting our cold-chain storage system especially for our vaccines.

The executive secretary said that UNICEF supported cold-chain storage facility had made Enugu State successful in routine and special immunizations whether in fixed post and mobile or house-to-house immunization this year.

“The functional cold-chain storage facility in the state has led to the state stocking enough variety of different vaccines that are kept ready and at a right and effective temperature for all forms of immunization in the state.

“UNICEF has supported our immunisation with functional community or local awareness and health education programmes and publicity campaigns that had made our immunization penetration and coverage in the state very wide.

“These various UNICEF support have assisted greatly in maintaining optimal health of millions of children and mothers at the community levels in the state,” she said.

The review meetings reflected key achievement in the following areas, which included: key innovations and learning; partnership; constraints; actions required to address performance constraints, lessons learnt and best practices. (Flowerbudnews)
